I used to play this all the time as a kid. Even my dad would play it every now and then. I recently picked this up at my local video game shop. One of the other employees said he loves this game. I wasn't really sure how many people really played or remembered this game. Seems like it's well liked and is probably a cult classic at this point.

every single game with intensive use of scroll is way better on genesis. i remember playing Fifa 96 on Snes and thinking "this crap can't be this bad" with all the slowdowns on any longer and faster scroll of the screen.

I was hooked to this game back then (the Mega Drive version), it was a fresh mix between shooting & strategy, great stuff! As I said in the John Madden Football '93 comparison video, this period was EA heyday, especially on Mega Drive. I never played the SNES version but right from the start you can notice the limited resolution issue* with everything stretched/deformed and smaller playfield, huge fail! Another huge fail is the heavy censorship... Audio wise SNES version has slightly more realistic sound FX but they're muffled and the rocking tunes have been subdued while Sega version has cleaner sound and kickass music. Clearly the Mega Drive version seems the best as with most EA games. *(SNES can only outputs a resolution of 256x224 pixels in normal conditions since its hi-res mode has several technical restrictions and therefore was almost never used while the Mega Drive mostly runs its games in 320x224 pixels without any drawbacks)

The Mega Drive can use either a resolution of 256x224 or 320x224 pixels without problem while the SNES is stuck in 256x224 pixels since its hi-res mode is kinda useless. And then about colors, it makes little to no difference in many multiplats like this one here not to mention that these consoles, as well as every others systems up to the N64, are meant to be played on CRT (or HD TV/emulator but with scanlines + filters) which smoothes out the visuals reducing the few advantages the SNES has while on the other hand nothing can fixes SNES weak CPU, SNES limited resolution, SNES limited sprites engine, etc.

Yeh I believe the misleading resolution on the SNES spec sheet was only ever used in a static title screen. Some ppl still think the SNES has higher resolution. Many ppl also wrongly think it has bigger sprites. But as you said, it's just the graphics being stretched horizontally to fit the screen. Bizarrely, very few SNES games factor this in during development.

***** Personally I won't bother with the SNES version, the various issues due to the system low resolution (stretched graphics; smaller playfield...) & the censorship (which includes animations removal during the cutscenes) are huge fails. I still have to play the sequels but apparently Jungle Strike fared better on SNES than Desert Strike but not sure if it's still better than the Mega Drive version. As for Urban Strike I heard that the SNES version is plagued with slowdowns... Do as you want, of course, but nowadays it's easier to know how to enjoy better experiences ;)

As for the music of first party games, both snes and genesis have their own unique style that are awesome in their own rights. Genesis doesn't beat Snes in every third party game though. FlashBack is best played and heard on the snes out of every platform out there, among the many on which it was ported to.

Compared to the SNES versions of the later Strike games, Desert Strike on SNES is really good. MD is superior, yes, but SNES ver. is still great and... you can strafe/jink left and right with those SNES shoulder buttons, which is a nice addition > MD method...

Yeah, exactly. I guess the only real flaw in the SNES version is the screen being stretched, which is, just for the record, a port problem, not a console one. Both sound and palette are subjective. It's nice you mentioned the controls on shoulder buttons because they really make the difference IMHO.

@bee boo The further zoomed out playfield is far superior, for one (due to the Genesis' higher native resolution). It allows you to see enemies before they're right on top of you... or below you... well, you know what I mean. Desert Strike was primarily developed for the Genesis and the SNES version is a port, which is why the Genesis is better in this particular case (primarily for the reason stated). About the only aspect of the SNES version which is superior are the sound effects. Not a great trade off really.

Disagree, drowning or boiling are quite violent sights for children especially here in a realistic context. There are many instances of pointless censorship in SNES games given their respective surrealist context (Mortal Kombat; Primal Rage; Ninja Warriors Again...) but here it's different. But it's a fail anyway & it's due to Nintendo family friendly positioning, partly to broaden their sales potential, money money as always with Nintendo. & for someone like me who is all about any kinds of freedom of expression, I find this completely stupid & think that they simply shouldn't have bothered with this game on SNES.

When I was a kid growing up during the 16-Bit wars :), I always assumed that most games played, looked and sounded better on SNES (except for shmups and sports titles). Now I realize just how much the resolution and the snes cpu really affected snes/genesis ports. The lower resolution on the SNES must give the game an unfair advantage over the player due to less real estate on the screen which makes it harder to avoid incoming enemy fire. SNES is still my favorite console ever, but the Genesis really kicks ass in many departments.

Esse jogo tive a oportunidade de vê-lo nos dois consoles na casa de um vizinho meu, durante a transição de MD (09/1996) para SNES (05/1997) na casa dele (onde teve que simular um roubo para trocar de videogame, pois a vó dele implicava com coisa nova em casa) só desconfio porque ele apareceu com bastante jogo depois 🤣. Na época eu achava a versão do MD melhor, quando ele pulou para do SNES só achei as cores poucas coisas melhores e o som "mais leve"... Mas nesse daí o MD leva a melhor pela não censura (da abertura) e pelos pequenos detalhes a mais...

Not a fanboy here, but this kind of comparisons doesn't show at all wich system is better, like many people allways try to bring to this videos. The MD version is obviously better, but being the original it was programmed by EA itself with the MegaDrive and its capabilities in mind, while the SNES was ported by Visual Concepts, probably with much less time, resources and talent, and doesn't show what the system would be capable if the game was designed for it. And that goes for that inferior SNES to MD ports too. For those talking about the weird resolution on the SNES versión, on an actual 4:3 CRT TV, both versions have the same proportions. MD/Gen looks slightly crispier, and SNES has better color but slightly bigger sprites (and that hurts the gameplay a bit). The SNES port has more pleasant sound effects, but the MD version plays better and runs a bit smoother IMO, and that's much more important. Both games are good, tho. The SNES version gets plenty of undeserved hate.

The SNES version benefits from better rotor and gun sounds, but aside of some more polished presentation at points (i.e. mosaic and zoom effects), there's nothing here that the Mega Drive isn't doing as well, if not better, such as more animation on cut scenes and menus, and the same amount of colour throughout the game (the SNES version has a different, yet equally sized palette).

Recomendo esquivar dos ataques, em nenhuma das versões vc usou. No mega é segurando botão A e snes é segurando R ou L. Nah, I think EA handled the SNES and Amiga versions. The staff role on the SNES version is very similar to that of the Mega Drive version. Gremlin ported Jungle Strike to the SNES but Ocean were responsible for the computer versions.

Nintendo tryhards in a nutshell: unable to face SNES numerous technical limitations (weak CPU, limited resolution, etc) and when a game is worst on SNES "but it's a crap game anyway" xD So, yeah, Desert Strike is better on Genesis (or Amiga) than SNES and same for most EA games which, btw, *are* great games: John Madden serie, NHL serie, Desert Strike and its two sequels, etc.

Parallax Craze I grew up with the SNES. Had a Megadrive for a little while but not sure what became of it (I was very young). Imo the sound for the MD was pretty good, but some parts sound very "bit crushed" and a little bit too jumbled together. The SNES has more realistic sounds (for example, the chopper blades and the winch), and the music is a lot clearer. And for the record guys, you might want to stop living in the 90's. Spoiler alert; Nintendo won the console war. In all seriousness though, as much as it makes me sad to say, Sega is now just a shell of it's former self (but even I will admit that Nintendo is a slowly sinking ship as well) I'm all for differing opinions but you won't change any minds by insulting others simply because they prefer something that you don't. Stop acting like Sega does everything better. If they did, they might still be making consoles...

+KingShrykull You sound like a reasonable guy but still: - SNES has bit better sound effects here but the whole audio is muffled and music is awful IMO. - Nintendo didn't win the 16-bit console wars. Both Nintendo and Sega sold about as much hardwares (don't forget that Sega also had various add-ons and alternative hardware forms, e.g. the CDX for example). And anyway to "win" a console war based on sales means nothing. The Wii won the sales but was the worst console of its generation, the NES won the sales but was worst than the Master System, the Game Boy worst than the Lynx or Game Gear, etc. - and no, the original versions aren't always the best. Example with Hellfire which is better on Mega Drive than arcade, Chelnov better on Mega Drive than arcade, etc.

The 8:7 aspect ratio stretched to 4:3 really lets the snes down. Lots of games ended up having a weird stretched look, which also resulted in the graphics looking blurry compared to the crisp graphics of the Genesis. If the Snes output gameplay at the same resolution as the genesis and had a slight faster processor then it would be a clear winner. But due to its shortcomings there is no winner for me. The hardware is just too different to compare the two.

@@user-tn5kz5xb6u this is true that the image ratio can be corrected via the sprite design. But the pixels are still being stretched so that the image can fit 4:3. Less pixels = more blur. I usually play snes games at 8:7, I really dislike stretching to fit. In 8:7 the narrow image is as sharp as the Genesis and more importantly it is correct. It just means that some games, like chrono trigger, will have an elliptical moon.

I don't know what you are are watching but clearly both consoles have smooth and near identical FPS. If anything it's a limitation of the sprite animations for both consoles. The resolution on the SNES is wider and stretched while the Genesis/MD looks skinny and compressed. It's more personal preference both looks great. The MD/Genesis has better music while the SNES has better sound effects. I own both consoles and I never fanboy, both games are playable and look amazing so play what you like no need to argue the SGEA vs Nintendo wars died long ago.

Wii, Wii U fails, Nintendo switch, which I think looks pretty good. Either way they're barely trying to stay afloat its pitiful. and Nintendo's licensing Sega games. Nintendo was so great yet there putting Sega stuff on their system. it died a long time ago. But when I think about it I've always wanted a Nintendo or SNES and finally when I get the chance to play them they are so crappy in quality, and you know when I realized these games that are better and yes there are games better on the SNES you notice they have more space for game data on the Super NES cartridges. I would still take the Genesis the Super Nintendo was such garbage. it didn't die a long time ago I Want You To Worship this Sega cock

I honestly lost you after you said it died along time ago. Your opening sentence is "they died a long time ago? Obviously not" Than you say "it died a long time ago" I'm confused which is it? Your last sentences are hard to understand but I know you are basically saying you prefer Genesis to SNES and saying SNES is terrible which if that were true it wouldn't have sold more than Genesis. But that's fine you are entitles to your opinion. But the truth is one is not better than the other. Both consoles have their pros and cons that make them about equal to each other.

Agreed. As for music and sound, it's definitely subjective. I really don't get it when it's said "oh the badass rockin' tunes on Sega" - really, that does sound like pollution to me. So it's all about taste. I do prefer the SNES version because of the shoulder buttons. The stretched screens bother me a little, though.
