I went to the mexican grocer to get some of these for fajitas, and the guy in line behind me was excited to see a white kid buying them and asked me how I was planning on cooking them. He approved of my "cast iron skillet" response.

My dad moved to California from Texas in the 60s. No one had any fajitas at the grocery stores. So he asked to speak to the butcher and a couple of Mexicans came out from the back. He got some fajitas that day.

salt makes everything better sweet stuff also alot of desserts have salt in them and it goes especially well with chocolate. As a matter of fact my favorite chocolate has himalayan salt in it.

Oh my lord, you are SO right about those hair like spines! I had gotten a prickly pear and I ate it, I didn’t realize it had those small spines. WEEKS later, they were still in my skin and they had hurt so bad! They were in between my fingers, and my hands, and every time I moved my fingers I felt a sharp pain, and I couldn’t see what was in my skin.
@davejan744

xDead Dolly , Trick for prickly pears is to run a flame over em before plucking them from the plant. My mother taught me that 60 years ago. Wed gather 5 gallon buckets of them & make jams. Pretty much the same for any cactus. Small propane torch works great but any flame will do.

This cactus used to be very common in Australia too, however being an introduced species it quickly became invasive. The cactoblastis moth was introduced from South America and it pretty much wiped them out. Unfortunately that means one less available food source in Australia’s vast desert regions.

Not all cactus are good for consumption. The ones that are OK to eat you have to go for the "new" pads. These are tender and have no big torns. You have to be patient and remove all the torns, then cook in any way you want. Boil and mix with shopped onions, tomato, peppers and cilantro for a great salad. Mix with scrambled eggs for a great breakfast. Cook with Colorado chili salsa and shrimp powder and these are to die for.

Harold Harold 1. Shave the nopal (cactus leaf) with the blade, just the skin layer with the thorns. 2. Once nopales are skinned give a quick rinse to remove some of the small hair like spines 3. Slice or cube the nopal then put on a pot with a small amount of water, should be about a quarter in relation to the nopales weight. Add onion, garlic and cilantro while it boils. Also a bit of salt. The nopal releases a lot of water while being cooked so the water in the pot will rise a lot. Once they are cooked strain the water out, and you can eat them as they are, or you can also, lightly fry and add eggs, or add some tomato sauce and Chile ( hot pepper). My grandmother fries some pork loin then adds onions and a tomato sauce with oregano a bit of spices and California pepper lets it boil a bit and adds the nopales in. There are a lot of recipes. We have a few nopal planted around the house so we eat them all year long. They easy like grow with proper care and every 2 weeks or so we have new leafs ready for picking.
