Great video. Most of my big game rifles are mausers, or non detachable magazine. Though recently I happened to get new rifles with detachables magazines and based on an experience with my Brno 22lr when I was a youngster I lost the magazine while crossing a fence. I noticed the loss about 200 meters from the fence. I could retract my way and was lucky to find the magazine which was near the fence in a feeding grass field. This Model 2 Brno has a button which easely allowed the ejection of the magazine. Since then I have I always try to have an extra magazine for all my rifles with detachable magazines.

If I remember right three lug bolts tend to be stiffer not from more surface area of the lugs, but because the bolt requires more torque to cock the cam which has to be milled at a greater angle. Many three lug designs now use double cams to compensate for this, which is why they are easier to operate.

Thanks for this video. I used to be an pushfeed accuracy only type person and that fine and all, but when I got to my 40's I now prefer mechanical reliability and the Mauser 98 style actions. Making that worse is that im left handed. Little choices. For this reason ive picked up Ruger Hawkeyes and have been really satisfied. Ive had cheap NEF single shots and Remington push feed rifles freeze up on me in freezing rain and a broken extractor from the factory. Ended up with Sako type and M-16 extractors milled into the bolt as a fix. Now I just use that large Ruger/Mauser type extractor and haven't had issues. It really sucks when you out hunting and can't open a bolt to feed your rifle so you have to build a small fire to warm it up. My Ruger scout rifle didn't present me with any issues and it keeps working in horrible weather and conditions. Another failure ive had in push feeds were the feed rails allowing two cartridges to jump up into the breech. For these reasons I really don't think push feed is the optimum choice.

@desertdogoutdoors11133 жыл бұрын
If you look at the title of this video, it states "push feed" rifles. I believe that the 77s made after 1991 (mk2 and Hawkeye) are controlled round feed rifles. All controlled round feed rifles on the market block the firing pin as a function of the safety.
@haroldmilroy44893 жыл бұрын
@@desertdogoutdoors1113 I realize what the heading of your video states. I am merely commenting on the segment where you discuss the merits of controlled round safeties vs push feed safeties. You are again correct when it comes to the Ruger 77 / Hawkeye push vs CRF feed versions. Having had a number of both variations, I wondered why when it appeared to me that all Ruger had to in order to have the first version a CRF rifle was to remove the bottom lip on the bolt face. I don't pretend a smith so there might have been more to this. Getting back to my comment - what I'm stating is that to my knowledge and I certainly stand to be corrected, I know of no other CRF rifle who's three position safety pivots around and fits into a recess in the firing pin mechanically locking in "safe" position. Whether you or any other shooter feels that's a good feature is up to each person to decide. I'm not arguing with you in fact, if you read my comment, you'll see I think your video is a great.

Excellent video - about detachable magazines: I agree with you 100%, however, in a lot of areas hunters refuse to use fixed box magazines. The most common reason is that local regulations require rifles to be unloaded in vehicles - and a lot of them want to simply drop the mag, and get back in. (Or pop a loaded mag in and blast out the window of the truck - unfortunately and disgustingly common in my area.) A LGS owner I was good friends with wouldnt bring in hinged floorplate models as they wouldnt sell. Thanks again for your great content!
@desertdogoutdoors11133 жыл бұрын
We have to unload every time we enter a vehicle. It takes literally 2 seconds to open the floorplate and dump the cartridges in my hand. Just as fast as a detachable magazine IMO. I believe many "new hunters", who have never used a classic rifle, don't understand the benefits of a simple hinged floorplate. I agree, the types that shoot out the window of their truck are disgusting.

On safeties, there is a new system, you mentioned one of the rifles with it earlier - the R8 has it. It is the system where the "safety" compresses or decompresses the firing pin spring. When trying out my cousins new Tikka T3 in (30-06 SS/Laminate) this year I found it shot great, bolt was extremely smooth, and it felt like a really solid quality rifle. After we were done shooting and he put his rifle back in the truck I happened to look down and see a magazine spring and follower laying on the ground. Sure enough the bottom of the single stack plastic magazine was only attached with 4 small plastic pegs (about the same diameter as a pens ink tube) molded into the magazine which had given way and left the mag spring, follower and bottom of the mag lost in the grass. If I had not noticed this he would not have known is rifle was no longer functional or if this had happed while hunting his rifle would be an immediate single shot. Sadly, this quality rifle is really not trustworthy or reliable at all with this cheep magazine system.

DD, what do you think about the Weatherby MK V’s? Especially the long magnum actions, with the 9 lug design. I’ve been told they feed smoother than the Sako’s, but I’ve never handled one.
@desertdogoutdoors11133 жыл бұрын
The MK V's are quality rifles. There is debate over whether or not a bunch of "tiny" lugs are actually stronger than two "huge" lugs. I have heard actual engineers spout proclamations for both schools of thought. The "smooth" feel of the MK V is likely from the hand-fitting and attention to detail; much like our beloved pre-64 M70's and many custom actions.
@falba14923 жыл бұрын
Do you know about the extractor issues on the Sako 85? On the magnum calibers, especially 338 and larger, the cartridge is extracted at a very steep angle, and crashes into the scope. In turn the cartridge has a tendency of falling back into the open chamber and jamming the action. I was going to purchase a used Kodiak in 375 H&H, until the owner demoed the rifle at the range for me. After a little research, turns out Sako knows about the issue, but their solution is to use “higher scope mounts”. That’s total bullshit if you ask me. I own several Tikkas and Sakos, but none in magnum calibers.

They’re all good rifles. The rifle debate is almost as dumb as the Ford vs Chevy debate. These videos are geared towards the big hunts. Big and dangerous game. In that aspect I agree with every comment on here. But what most high end gun owners don’t understand is that if you’re just an average whitetail hunter all these points, although great, don’t necessarily apply. If you’re walking a mile through average eastern mountains or around farm land to get into a tree stand than there is no difference between the model 70 and a marlin 336. As a matter of fact when I’m still hunting and walking our logging roads, I often carry my topper 410 with a slug. The point is the build quality and expense are important to a certain extent. I’ve become a fan of savage here lately, actually the axis. Which is their base line economy rifle. Between what I own and what family members own, we have dang near all the rifles and I’ve shot and hunted with them all. They all do the job for what we do. So I agree that there are probably a certain few that will go to Africa or out west in the Rockies. But they all shoot and they all put meat on the table.

I wanted to know what you think of the 6.8 Western as a large game such as Elk using 165 accubond LR
@desertdogoutdoors11133 жыл бұрын
Don't fall for the hype. At hunting distances, the old 7mm Rem Mag with a 168gr Accubond LR will perform better than the 6.8 Western (with the 165gr ABLR), and have the same amount of recoil. The reviews you are seeing are PAID reviews.

@@desertdogoutdoors1113 I have not decided if the 6.8 western is good or bad yet. I do not own one, have not seriously thought about getting one. I am just curious and want to learn. You state that the 7mm rem mag with 168 gr accubond LR will out perform the 6.8 western with 165 accubond LR. could you explain in more detail how and why?
@fedup35822 жыл бұрын
@@desertdogoutdoors1113 I doubt I will ever get a 6.8 western or even manage to replace the 7mm rem mag model 70 supergrade I used to have, that badly warped its stock, but I still miss. I have recently picked up a pre 64 model 70 in 300 H&H. I am still rounding up ammo and haven't shot it yet but hope it shoots as well as my other pre 64 in 257 Roberts. I don't really have a need for a 300 mag and already have a 300 WSM model 70, that I haven't used in years, but the 300 H&H isn't so much overkill like a 300 RUM, and its just fun to hunt with class, history, and nostalgia. The way my age and health is going, I don't know about the future of my hunting though, but I'm not giving up yet.

X bolt pro 6.8 western and Weatherby mark V hunter 280AI . I can close eye and take them anytime over Tikka t3x 7mm or Savage ultralight 30-06 . Honestly all 4 will do same under 400 yards hunting. But we always need reason to buy another

Push feed? Wouldn't you rather have a bolt action ? Like a Remington 700? Lol

use your talent and knowledge , bodington dont have anything on you!!!! publish a book!! you are awesome!! take my advice!!

Thank you for the compliment. In reality though, Mr Boddington has more experience in a typical 5-year stretch of his life than I will ever have in my lifetime. He is a humble man, very ethical, and a great ambassador of the lifestyle. If my channel appeals to you more, it's probably because I don't have to make sponsors happy!

@@desertdogoutdoors1113 you are correct about the sponsorship , bodington does have morr experience after all thats what he's paid to do! but through youtube I myself have seen more of your vids in a year than I have seen boddingtons in a lifetime ! and your are educated and very informative about every subject you speak of !!! keep up the awesome work and good hunting!!
