I remember when people used to say that this fire station was considered a vacation to work at. I also went to Lew Wallace class of '71, and I lived on 37th and Broadway above Hank and Casey's.

My brother in law lives in Gary. He had two boys and made them help by putting them to work for themselves by mowing the lawn and shoveling snow in the winter. They were equipped with the right tools for the job. They earned their money to purchase their equipment they needed to do a very good job. They were well known for excellence by their patrons. They left the land looking beautiful. People, please use the garbage can or dumpsters instead of littering. ✊Rock-on Brothers

The city closed it in August 2012 because a contractor doing upgrades to the interior found a lot of asbestos through out the building. I agree it is a great looking building and its a shame the city won't spend the money to take the asbestos out. I used to hang out there when I was a kid and the Firemen were all awesome people. One day when I was there they asked me if I wanted to slide down the pole and me being 12 or 13 years old and indestructible said hell yes. They took me up on the second floor and showed me how to hold on and what to do. Let me tell you, looking through that hole in the second floor down to the first floor was scary as hell. They had 4 or 5 guys down there to catch me in case I fell so I did it. Man that was one hell of a rush. I had a smile on my face for a week. Nowadays I bet there isn't a fire station in the country that would let a kid do that because of liability.

Thats a eye shot from my old house....wow. Thanks man.... Good ol days...lol. Did you notice the outline of new brick on the front....lol? They accidentally backed a fire truck into the wall back in the early 90's....with the ladder up. It still looks pretty good for sure...

They should feel lucky with what they got. Most cities in WI with 70k in population don't have 10 companies. Place I grew up had five for 70K.

The reason. For the tall part is more then likely a hose tower to let the hose dry.

Dig this. I worked for The GFD back in the day. Many 24 hour shifts at this station. A few of the brothers I worked with in the 70's told me the reason the houses were in bad shape, was because white folks left them that way when running south???? What you think??? Go Hornets 1967
