Thank you Evgen! My background is in parametric CAD actually. I started in Autocad and 3d studio years ago and went through many software packages including inventor, NX, Solidworks, onshape and Fusion 360. I have done a lot with reverse engineering and building parts off of scans in other software packages. I worked in automotive research for a bunch of years and trained clients across the US in various workflows. I have been supporting Fusion 360 now for about 5 or 6 years because it is a great tool and very accessible to everyone. The free version and very low price point is very appealing. Also why I like to cover Blender. Soon I will be making some blender content drawing some parallels between working in Fusion forms and blender.

Going through the series slowly as I was looking for exactly this - using a 3d model/reference image to model organic shapes! I was wondering if I was to properly scale the model/image I was using as a reference, would the piece that I'm designing be fully defined and thus ready for 3D printing?
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign Жыл бұрын
There are a lot of factors there. If doing this from an image(s) alone you are going to have variations. If you have a good quality scan to scale then likely you can print parts that will fit just fine. The tesla spoiler video I did, the person 3d printed that and it fit great. He had to print it in smaller pieces and glue them together though because of its size. Soon(in the next month or so) I will be scanning a car that I modeled from images and will be comparing how close I was with some of the details.

As someone else already wrote, i also learned more through that one video than all other videos i saw and i am very thankful for your tutorial - i will watch more from you and already subscribed. I just have a question: Is it somehow possible to modify the first curve of the fender from the cylinder (the cylinder that you created from the center of the wheel)? In my test fender i saw that its not perfectly round, and as well i see it in your video. I am sure you would edit it somehow before building e.g. a mold for the final product. I cannot imagine that its only possible to adapt the curve by hand to a cylinder. Even if it looks rounds, you would need to add a lot of edges to make it more perfect but it would still never be a perfect radius if i can say so. Hope you understand what i mean, but later on today i will do some test. I thought about to devide the front of the cylinder so that i get a lot of points and later i will weld the fender points to the points on the outside of the cylinder. I am sure there is a better option 😄 Best regards, Denis
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign 12 сағат бұрын
Hey Denis, yeah there is a lot to unpack for sure. Couple of notes and ill add some links to other videos for you. 1. Very true that the wheel arch isn't going to be a perfect radius. In reality they aren't as most will have some section that is a near perfect radius from the side but then change. To manually get something is tough and you will never be able to manually get something and measure it to know how "true" it is. 2. Yes there are tools and ill put some links below. You can use curves, surfaces, and mesh bodies to drive the form. So for example if you wanted to exactly match the OEM opening just pushed out 3in, you could copy the mesh, move it 3in then attach the form to that mesh. You can also use an extruded/trimmed surface and use the match tool. This does some funny things when you work with the tolerance on because it adds a lot of internal points making it tough to edit so i generally do this at the start and again at the end when im happy with a design(or close to it). Thanks for the Sub! On the car modeling there are a lot of videos/playlists on this channel over the last 2 or 3 years that hit the subject. There are a few car modeling series, I did a scan to part design series on my starion, and have hit the topic in a few other places. Scan to design series - kzbin.info/aero/PLBDfGh8A8kXVvKBJ4UudhVLKlPdumAg5P Forms mastery playlist - kzbin.info/aero/PLBDfGh8A8kXWCgB3Q5DYiCDSCxCqw8tJ7 This is probably what you are looking for. Match tool - kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipzYg3ljm7ufmdU Being able to freeze/unfreeze is helpful Freeze - unfreeze - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZLTemSPnsugptU Here is a series i did for a user doing a 3d printed racecar fender for their datsun. Car Fender Series - kzbin.info/aero/PLBDfGh8A8kXWeZ6Q2C8P9xPw5oMUEEEWZ My suggestion is that if you plan to manufacture a part by say CNC milling a mold, then either use surfaces OR create critical/dimension controlled edges/curves/surfaces that you can attach the form to using the Match tool.

@@LearnEverythingAboutDesign *i have already answered about 40 minutes ago, but i got a error which i didnt saw it and then just a minute ago i answered again, but i lost the long first answer. I just managed to copy to the second answer. So, i reply now again, (but i make it a bit shorter, because in meantime i solved 2 important things for me): THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I didnt expect that you will reply, because that video is already at least 2 years old, but you replied quickly and very informative. Nice from you, thanks! I will check surfaces and also the video where you wrote "This is probably what you are looking for". Yes, i have a big cnc router (2500 x 1250 mm) where i want to create the molds, but actually i wanted to build some parts, like fender flare, side flare and some other things from sheet metal, by the "Incremental Sheet Metal Forming" method. Unfortunately, due to the form of the fender i will design, it will be difficult to realise and i also posted about it in the Fusion 360 Forum, but didnt got a reply yet (forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-design-validate-document/prepare-mirrored-forms-car-fender-to-be-able-to-form-them-on-a/td-p/12980025). Now about the "perfect circle around the wheel". I found one solution that seems to work and i wrote about that in my first reply that has not been sent, but i found one other, so it might not be necessary, but maybe still a good & quick solution: If you want a perfect circle, you can later convert to BRep, draw a circle over the fender and then cut through the circle. Here my other solution (i will just post my second reply that i managed to copy): Maybe thats something that could interest you - i doubt because you are experienced and for sure you know about it, but here i try to explain: In your video at the beginning you first created a circle, then you cut off most of it (lower part), because you didnt need it. After that you aligned the points to the original car fender design and then you created a vertical lip that you had to align again as well as the edges you had to align in direction to the middle point of the circle. (every car design is different and not all cars have perfect round radius around the wheel, so your case might be different than mine, but my way of doing it might be still interesting) Here it is: So, to get a perfect circle i did it this way: I created a circle but i didnt cut of anything and left it as full circle. Then i created the vertical lip of that circle and thereby all the edges were automatically aligned to the middlepoint of the circle. After that i cut of what i didnt needed (lower part) and than i extruded the "curved" surface to the direction of the car to create the form of the fender flare. Then i aligned the ends of the flare on the left and right side. It has changed the thickness of the lip at those ends on the sides, but the lip was perfectly round at all other points (so e.g. 95% of the whole lip) and the circle was perfectly round. Difficult to explain, but this has actually solved my problem for now, but i will continue to try out and test. Currently i only have a picture of the HWA 190E W201 Evo attached behind my design and no 3d scanned mesh. I have a scanner and soon i will start to scan the W201 190E that is in my garage, but now i am just learning and testing :). Best Regards, Denis

@@LearnEverythingAboutDesign Okay, i give up. I have spend almost 1 and half hours to reply you, because my first long reply has been deleted, because of some error. Then i replied again, not seeing that my first reply was deleted, but i managed to copy it. I have then replied with a completly new text that took me a while to write, because i explained everything and have sent it and saw it was there, but now its gone again. It seems its because i attached a link of the Fusion 360 forum where created a post. I will not again spend so much time to write so much, because i am angry to my self not understand that it was because of the link and also angry to youtube that they do not send me a mail with the reply i have send, so that i could just delete the god damned link. @@OstModellbau118 I have a general series about plastic part design kzbin.info/aero/PLBDfGh8A8kXX5mMcgJze-OHeChFQS7ru1 but not one specifically for this part. If you are trying to use something like vacuum forming then you make what is called a buck. This is the inside of the part. Hi! You mentioned there was an automatic way to adjust the lines around the wheel arch to point to the center. How is that done? Also, is there a way that you can make the lines all equally spaced?
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign Жыл бұрын
Hey Bryce, the way to adjust the lines around the wheel arch to a point in the center is resetting the "pivot point" once you have your lines selected. The best way to do this is from the start as its a relative type of operation. So if your lines are already out of round it really won't help too much. The pivot point reset is on that annoying little floating menu that is always getting in the way. Looks like a little XYZ axes. click that. then set your point where you want it, then click the green check mark where that XYZ button was. Now any scale or rotate operations will be relative to that point. For the lines equally spaced, not "exactly". You can use some tools like Smooth which will average them out. Also under the utility menu you have "Make uniform" which will take the smooth display model and space things out. I am not aware of any tool that will make them numerically equal though.

@@LearnEverythingAboutDesign sorry I dont know what you meant by "prerunner". Maybe a conceptional or prototype you mean, idk. And no, i dont want to design myself, but want to download a copy file. Procomp product exist already in market, but limited quantity and $$$. Thanks for answering, friend

@@atadali9711 PreRunner is a style of desert/off road truck. They generally have 3 to 6in wider fender flares. I can't help you with the Procomp. If a company makes a product like that its not really something you can or should download to make yourself. Designing your own in the same style I think would be ok.

@@LearnEverythingAboutDesign maybe you can make it for me after we agree on how much I should pay. You may consider 2 things: 1- I believe procomp discontinued the product 2- it still needs to be modified because i want installing it on a different year model of the car.

@@atadali9711 I did a quick search and found a few vendors such as summit, vivid racing and others still selling them. Just fyi. I wish I had the time to take on more design clients but at the moment I am pretty slammed with work. I have done work for fender flare companies in the past and they benefit from access to OEM cad data so you don't have to deal with scans. This makes the design process much easier. If you want to send me an email support@caducator.com I can maybe give you some contacts for contractors that might be able to tackle this project for you. I don't want to quote any prices here but I am sure just scanning a vehicle would cost more than the $700usd the flares are currently selling for.

Can I do this on the personal use version of fusion 360?
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign 11 ай бұрын
yup to the best of my knowledge. The hobby/personal version has limitations on certain things like no access to extensions(advanced multi axis, simulation, gen design), but the core design tools like freeform modeling used here are in the software.

@@LearnEverythingAboutDesign thanks mate, unfortunately I’m using Onshape and don’t think they have these Freeform modeling tools as I know of but I can mix the two of them together

@@jensensphotography4570 Yeah Onshape doesn't currently. SolidEdge does have subD but I wasn't impressed with it when I used it. You certainly can take a freeform surface from Fusion and import to Onshape and carry on with surface tools there for sure.

@@LearnEverythingAboutDesign yeah thanks for letting me know haha, I’m new too cad, and iv looked at a lot of different cad softwares but I think onshape resonates a lot with me, and iv watched some other channel that covers the basics very well and iv come across your channel and going thru this playlist and it is very helpful to under what you are doing, how you are doing it to achieve your goal or ideas. Any of your videos you suggest I watch to understand the the Freeform modeling tools, like the basics?

@LearnEverythingAboutDesign 11 ай бұрын
@@jensensphotography4570 I've covered onshape in the past when it was first released but haven't kept up with it. I like the idea but not the execution of it. on the forms stuff i have hundreds of videos on the subject. There is a form mastery series on here. kzbin.info/aero/PLBDfGh8A8kXWCgB3Q5DYiCDSCxCqw8tJ7 that was just a place to start talking about the basics. I also have a site with paid content on it. www.LearnEverythingAboutDesign.com that has a super basic intro to forms modeling for beginners as well as a lot of other entry level content. No matter what software you use the concepts will all be the same. It is just learning the tools to select, move and add edges that is the tricky across different CAD programs. Freeform modeling is a bit of a tough one because each program will behave slightly different so I would suggest picking one you like and learning just that one until you are really comfortable. This way you can focus on the design aspect and less about constantly trying to figure out which tools do what. For example power surfacing add-in for Solidworks is a great tool with loads of options like edge weighting(so you don't have to put a lot of edges close together to get a sharper edge), and it has some cool level of detail options where you can focus on a single face. This is unique to Power Surfacing. Edge weighting is available on SubD in Creo but no other CAD program that I know of. What is built into Fusion (and Inventor) is called TSplines. and its claim to fame is "T points" or the ability to have an edge end in the middle of another edge. blessing and a curse really as it can get nasty quick if you aren't careful. Fusion forms is easy to use and very accessible but requires patience. Tsplines was an addin for Rhino and others until Autodesk purchased it. Rhino has been building their own SubD workflow and Rhino 8 is supposed to be pretty good so I am looking forward to that. Solid Edge has freeform modeling but limited toolsets. Higher up tools like Creo, Catia, NX, Alias all have SubD but again varied workflow. So at this stage if you want to learn freeform modeling stick with Fusion to learn it and then you should be able to apply that workflow to most other programs if you need to expand :)
