I wonder if you could make it retractable by using a 3 line fishing system throughout the whip. Then have the pommel twist so it can crank back the 3 individual lines to easily put it back to staff form. Thus a button can be pressed to release the tension for "her signature action". I figure it could be a practical way for live demonstrations without the awkward reassembly afterwards. My inspiration is from spin cast fishing rods mainly.

My best thought (for the simplest possible way) would be to have each point simply be ‘loose’ on the lit up, flexible wire and ‘anchor’ each bit to separate points on the wire that allow them to slide downwards and separate. You could implement REALLY weak magnets between each piece to keep them locked together, since a low-strength but sharp motion will allow the pieces to separate from eachother. If you were to make the top gem hollow, excess flexible wire could be stored there, and then when ‘flicked’ and the pieces separate, the wire will be weighed down and fall out of the top gem. The trickiest bit would be putting the wire back in, but i imagine making it detachable (a twist lock would probably be easiest) would make it much more manageable.

The weapon reminds me of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. There's a character named Brighid who basically has the same thing except a sword that becomes a whip but is linked by fire instead of energy.
