Great video! I was at this crossroad not too long ago and I’m so happy I chose a UX Writing centered course instead of a Design one (and it cost me 1/4th the price). Much of what I’ve learned about UX Writing doesn’t focus on design other than the placement of text. It’s nice being able to mock-up screens in Figma, but I was able to learn the serviceable basics through an introductory course that only took a week. Would love to see a video from you about putting together a portfolio, either for newcomers or just a general one.

Yeah exactly! It's good to know UX design principles, but there's way cheaper ways to learn. I'll add the portfolio to the list of video ideas 😁

They're just too expensive to be worth it for writers IMO. You can learn all you need to know from Udemy, books, KZbin, etc. And like I say, for those that want structured learning, there are UX writing courses for a fraction of the cost.

Awesome! Thank you and I been waiting for you to upload more. I am currently transitioning from architecture to UX writing. I was doing the sell taught route through your suggestion but after some mentoring I got access to a Boot Camp now working on my portfolio. Any advice for portfolio?

Hi, Edgar. Do you mind sharing which boot camp you have joined? (Also, I'm curious, are you transitioning from information architecture or traditional, "brick and mortar," architecture, thus outside of technology industries? I ask because I am interested in UX design or UX writing but my experience is outside of tech work.)

@@ScottIsebrand UX Writing Hub has a new course that’s self pace and self taught but you get access to other students and mentors. Now that I have taken it, you can learn it the self taught route it just takes a bit of work. It’s a good foundation but further self reading is needed. Also, each lesson has you practice what you learn which helps with Portfolio. I am coming from a traditional architectural background.

Thanks… what abt the Google UX certification? It’s cheaper than most boot camps. So is this a good way for aspiring UX writers to learn the ropes of UX in general?

It's a good introductory course, but the chances to get a job just by doing this course is really less.

What if I deserve the job and have good skills but don't have portfolio or don't have that much of time to invest in to create portfolio?

How will the hiring manager know you have the skills? A portfolio is pretty much expected now. It doesn't have to be big and flashy. It just needs to show you can do the job.
