Why does the CEO of a company spend 23 mins on discussing handful of screens? I get it, this is the 50-person basecamp team and they do things their own ways, but I can't help think if Jason's time could be spent on something else.

Why doing something else if it’s his passion? They have a profitable company and he can basically do what he likes. I love the idea of building a company to be able to just work on things you are passionated about. What in your opinion “should” he do?

He's not that busy... which is a very positive thing. The Basecamp culture ensures that there's no scarcity of time and attention, including at CEO level.

I think this is quite wonderful actually. It's a shame we don't have more CEO's with a true passion for the product their building.
