Can't I just catch the pinball and hold it until my flippers return to normal after a WAF tilt.

No, it only has so much power for a limited amount of time. The flipper will just drop.

The big resistor limits the current too much for even the holding circuit (keeps the flippers up. The only way to get a flip is to wait 2-3 seconds without flipping.
