I think I've identified one of your parts (5:10 timestamp on your video). I don't know if you have ever watched Leebo's Pinball channel but he did a Getaway series about 10 months ago and I recognized it in the video I just watched of his. That metal plate protects the wood at the trough outlet. Reference his video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6uTaXujj5urjJosi=rjkqzrQeRDg4ngWN&t=354

Making due with what we have is the name of the game . Another way to do it is drill two holes through the bottom where the original spot welds were . Clamp it together and then fill the hole with weld . It’s kind of like spot welding . Then grind it down smooth again . Part of your issue is stainless is very difficult to MIG weld . Ive been throwing around the idea of getting an Arc Welder for situations just like this . I would be starting with no experience but I didn’t know how to MIG weld 20 years ago and now I’m half way decent at it. Keep the videos coming , always enjoy them !
@ETPinball

Yeah, my mig welder is gas-less, and I wasn't even using the a proper flux core SS wire. I just wanted to get this thing back into the machine and keep the quarters rolling. I have the other broken scoop, that a buddy may weld more properly. That said, I don't plan on removing this one unless it fails...LOL

Sketchy sound can be hard to fix. Start with the simple stuff. Good grounds, good connectors, new caps for power supply and sound board....maybe try moving the speaker wire away from any a/c voltage interference.

Rectifier boards are not worth fixing in my opinion. Undersized bridges, burned up header pins, poor solder joints, Just not worth the trouble for such a critical board. Replacements are pretty cheap.
@ETPinball
@ETPinball 15 күн бұрын
If it was up to me, I'd replace most of them, but it isn't. And that is even more true for games that keep the incandescent bulbs in them since they are the culprits of almost all the problems on this board.

I'm glad to see you got it going though if I hadn't had three unexpected and expensive house repairs this year I might have made and offer for it as it was for my first restoration project. Suggestion for putting on decals. Get a fluid called RapidTac. It inhibits the adhesive and will allow you to reposition the decal until you get it just perfect then you use a squeegee or towel to get the fluid out from under it and fix it in place. I used to use it putting decals on aircraft. From small stickers to full length stripes. Great stuff. Their RapidRemover is great for getting adhesive residue off.
@ETPinball

I have been meaning to try that, but just never bought any. I have some more decals to place on a game soon, so I just bought a bottle on Amazon.

Most of the Ballys , at least the ones I e dealt with from that era are all tall posts from factory . I’ve redone 7 games from that same 5 years of time and all tall posts . Think they tried to keep things uniform ( less parts) less overhead . My thoughts anyway. I think they were meant to sit on the head of the screws to help support the plastic .

Beware of the some of the ebay caps. I bought a bunch for using on bally switches and about 1% would short within months....I threw a couple hundred in the trash. I started using somewhat crazy expensive ones (like 25 c each), but they are very reliable, that I bought on digikey or mouser.

Seems like an over complicated but cost reduced way to tell when a switch is closed. Glad it was a routine repair, though. I've seen that piggybacking a chip trick several times in the retro computer repair videos. It is a neat trick to know. Fun game to play even if it was still needing a bit of tweaking. I like it. I’ve noticed in a few videos now that your right thumbnail has a perfect hole drilled in it . I’m assuming you smashed your thumbnail and had to drill a hole to let the pressure out ? Here I was thinking I was the only one who had done that 😂I’ve also put a drill bit through my finger and nail from the underside . That really hurt and had to back the drill bit out in reverse . Anyhow great video as always ! Keep it up !
@ETPinball

I've done that, but using a hot nail to melt a hole. In this case the middle of the thumbnail just kind of fell out. I smashed it pretty good moving a pinball of course.

I’ve experienced similar issues with newer Sterns. Documentation is poor. Many of the opto connectors are very fragile/weak. I would much rather work and troubleshoot Williams games of the 90’s than modern Sterns. The led lamp driver boards are all SMD. I’ve learned to do SMD board repairs. Much more difficult and not easily done in the field.

@ETPinball
@ETPinball Ай бұрын
Place multimeter on resistance ("horseshoe") mode and place your leads on both terminals of the coil. If the resistance is less than 2 ohms it is shorted, or possibly the diode on the coil (if present) is shorted.
