Flex plate is probably bowing because you printed ABS on it and the bed adhesion was too high, so when the part cooled it shrank and caused the flex plate to bow. Great video! Instant sub/like for cool projects with great production that focus on the building and testing. Looking forward to more!

that's really cool. I feel like with 3d printing in cars most people overdo it and then end up 3d printing the whole thing rather than keeping it to the parts where it actually adds to the car that it is additively manufacturered but with your build its good because while this could be made from other materials the part like the dash implant truely benefits from the 3d printing technology because making that shape with the dail facing you would be really costly to do in one piece with conventional methods. props to you

The bowing is due to you printing in ABS, which shrinks when it cools. This is also why you need to use a heated print chamber, and why you (likely) have had issues with layer separation or bed adhesion. You should consider switching to PETG, which can handle high temp environments like ABS, but doesn't have the lifting/warping issue. Great video and can't wait to see more!
@fatlipcollectiveАй бұрын
Close but not quite. The ABS does shrink when it cools, which is why the flex plate bowed when I removed it - you don't need a heated chamber, but an enclosed one definitely helps. No issues with layer separation or bed adhesion, the reason it's bowing is because it is stuck so well to the bed, and only when removed from the printer - the plate is designed to flex and the print covered almost the entire surface with the raft. PETG has a much lower Gt than ABS, but it definitely has its place and I'll show a few PETG parts I've printed in my upcoming vid. Thanks for watching mate, appreciate you taking the time to comment.

i'd imagine that printing over such a wide area, with the hot plastic cooling over time causes very slight shrinkage as it cools. This would then put tension pulling the plate into a bow like shape

12:00 plastic, like metal srinks and expands in accordence to its temp, when the plastic itself (and/or the print plate) cools it causes it to strink, since the plastic is bonded together it doesnt want to break and thus bends along the path of least resistance until the force of the plastic bending is equal to the opposing force of the print plate wanting to stay flat. you can design prints to not do this but understanding how to do so is above my level of knowhow.
@fatlipcollectiveАй бұрын
Pretty much! There's nuance to different materials and build plates, and this plate bowing like this is the result of the material sticking well to the surface, as opposed to a common issue people face with ABS which is lifting from the print bed - both due to shrinkage. No harm in this plate flexing because it's after the print has finished and cooled :)
@yaredpino3615Ай бұрын
Congrats man!! It's amazing how it looks. And the brackets for the fan are beautiful too but you have to cover the entire radiator if you want it to cool down because they're meant to work covering the whole radiator and cooling it all at once, If it not the hot air could be goin around and heating the radiation instead of cooling it. Btw I don't speak English so that's why I don't know how to share my knowledge to you. Pd 2 try to inspire yourself looking at a modern car radiator's fan bracket and you will see that is fully covered in order to improve the air flow. Nice build btw
@fatlipcollectiveАй бұрын
Hey mate thanks for your kind words. Appreciate your concern: Yes, the most ideal setup would be a shroud that directs all flow from the radiator surface through the fan, but the way it is now will still comfortably cool what does pass through the fan, and is already much better than the previous setup I had with the clutch fan (which I ran for years with no shroud at all). So yep, you're right. Something like you've described would cool "better", but what I've got here will be more than enough :)

If you place the designated cleaner (that's safe for your specific material) into tupperware/jars/plastic resealable bags and run them in the ultrasonic to remove gasses, THEN put the parts into the container for the cleaning cycle< your tank water never gets dirty and you can clean multiple types of material at once. You also don't need to use distilled water anymore.
@fatlipcollectiveАй бұрын
Thanks mate, I've done that quite a bit in the past (check some of my other vids 🙂) Unfortunately it was time to put some of the bigger parts in there so I had to use the full tank :)

FYI, the bowing of the 3d printer flex plate is due to the contraction of the plastic as it cools back to solid. Unless i am wrong, you mentioned you were printing in ABS plastic. Which is rather notorious for it's tenancy to contract on cooling. Also this is what causes large prints to lift off the bed, or split the print, in the corners.
@fatlipcollectiveАй бұрын
Thanks mate yep that's basically it. It bowed because the print covered most of the surface area of the plate and when removed from the printer, as the plates designed to flex, the shrinkage of the material caused it to bow :)

Have you tried textured PEI plates. I use them on ABS and ASA and they have worked wonders. Holds during print and releases when cool.

Thanks mate I have, yep. I usually like the finish of printing on glass, but it depends what I'm making. Might look at adding a new printer soon and will likely go with PEI

reason for the print bed warping, is that the ABS itself are warping while stuck to the plate. A heated, or at the least, a draft proof chamber for the printer would help. Optimally you should have a heated chamber for printing ABS, so it doesnt cool down as unevenly as on a open printer. (especially with large pieces)

Thanks for interacting mate. You're close, the warping is due to the shrinking of the ABS but it occurred after the print was completed and it cooled down. The printer is enclosed and heated - the parts released from the bed flat and straight as a ruler :)

@fatlipcollective Yes you are correct , that is why when you use a heated chamber, the whole part is heated to 60-100c somewhere, and slowly and uniformely cooled down. No warping. I can even print nightmare plastics like nylon without warping like this😄

With all that room you saved by removing the clutch fan, you've got plenty of room for turbo plumbing. 😎 Get a blow-through carburetor and go to town!

Cheers mate! You should check out some of my other vids and keep an eye out for the new ones. Turbo things are coming :) 😎
