That sounds like such a horrible idea with airbags and all 😂
@BEdmonson85Ай бұрын
@@iso_2013 Well, considering there's also an airbag in the a-pillar (you can see it @1:09 just to the right of his left hand - it has a barcode sticker on it) , I'm not sure just how much better of an idea this is... 😬 I had to route the wiring for my dashcam very carefully when I was installing it in my car because of the same airbag location.
@iso_2013Ай бұрын
@@BEdmonson85 that's an excellent point, I didn't think of that
@camshandАй бұрын
@@BEdmonson85 to my knowledge the only side airbags are in the seat. Which is why I haven't been able to swap to low profile racing seats in my '07 350z. Which sucks as I'm tall as for the stock ones haha (in Aus you can't remove airbag functionality). The A-Pillar trim seems to just cover metal, and even if there was a airbag my clip on mount is on the pillar so if it somehow was to be pushed off, the mount would just go with it.
@TheFallenAngel13524Ай бұрын
@@camshand It's a curtain air bag in the headliner. The bar code is on an anchor strap that clips into the A pillar. It'll blow straight down/out to cover the window shoving the headliner/weather strip down and popping the top of the A pillar cover out. So basically if an impact doesn't send the watch flying the airbag deploying probably will. lol

FYI: if you activate dev options (same way you do on any android device) you can select keep awake when charging, so if you managed to actively cool it while charging (maybe with a peltier element) this could work
@mert2x982Ай бұрын
Peltier modules are horribly inefficient for cooling, just add a small heatsink or attach a fan to it. No need to go overkill for cooling.
@iso_2013Ай бұрын
The only problem I see with a heatsink would be that when the car isn't being used but is parked in direct sunlight, the air temperature inside would increase to the point that it probably wouldn't be able to cool well. Although, I'm not sure it needs to be charging when the car isn't in use.
@yourfriendlyneighborhoodjinxАй бұрын
@@mert2x982 they're inefficient sure, but the cooling for the size is unmatched. The car should be able to provide plenty power for such a small part and a heatsink would only be effective for a little while, not really after it's been cooking half the day. Not to mention there's really not a lot of a pillar. Maybe if the AC was vented to the back though, or mounting over a vent like some cars do.
@filcukАй бұрын
@yourfriendlyneighborhoodjinx I peltier needs it's own heatsink, so this makes no sense. They're more commonly used in applications where the heatsink sits outside of the device, like a mini fridge.
@nvirevolution2235Ай бұрын
Peltier devices are trash. Require moving heat away from them while also not providing much in cooling. A simple pasted on heatsink with a 40mm fan would be a much better option over a peltier.

PETG is going to warp, too. Inside the car gets a lot hotter than outside the car. I made a license plate frame from PLA and it sagged in no time. Made one from PETG and it took a little bit longer to sag, but still sagged. The ABS one I made after that has been fine for a while. I also made an iPhone mount that goes in front of the centre cubby above the stock stereo location. The PLA one warped and the phone would no longer fit. Ditto for a PETG one. The ABS one has been fine for a while.

just for your safety, no 3d printer fumes are safe to inhale. sadly, all filaments release airborne particles that aren't friendly to your lungs. would recommend proper safety if you print very often
@XyphurrАй бұрын
2:50 ASA is actually a fairly good material in place of ABS nowadays. Similar thermal characteristics, UV resistant, doesn't stink as bad or put off nearly as much noxious fumes, and Bambu Lab put out a pretty nice Carbon Fiber ASA that has a pretty nice finish on it. (Even though I know that was a pretty good place to plug PCBway)
@camshandАй бұрын
Interesting you mention ASA, my understanding of why ABS isn't good for your health is the S is Styrene. the S in ASA is also Styrene. Although it may not smell as bad, the VOC's being released are still toxic and should be treated with care. It's probably because I come from a background working at a University where safety was a priority so we had proper ventilation. So at home, I'm not willing to risk my long term health by rolling the dice without adequate ventilation. In general though, ASA solves a lot of pain points of ABS when 3D printing. I'm planning to add ducted fume extraction for my laser cutters, and hopefully can add the enclosed X1C into the pipes.
@XyphurrАй бұрын
@@camshand Fair point. I suppose since I've kinda been learning as I go, I've kinda missed that bit. I also trusted the integrated carbon filter to catch most of the VOC's, but know it's not a silver bullet. Also coming from previously owning an Anet A8 (an open-air cartesian printer known for catching on fire if you didn't upgrade some critical bits) I never got to play with some of the styrene-based materials, so I'm less experienced with handling it. I also did some cursory research before working with ASA, since I kinda was concerned regarding the VOCs, and _allegedly_ it puts off less fumes compared to ABS, but I'm not certain if that means less styrene in general. I aughta look and see if someone in a lab setting actually did some tests on that. I'd love to have an X1E that has the better filter and heated build chamber. That, and I'd love to get into higher education around some of this stuff. 3D printing has a lot of potential.
@camshandАй бұрын
I do wonder if 10 years down the track there'll be a "3D printing" epidemic from people inhaling fumes they weren't aware of. It's the same in the laser cutting community, I see so many posts on facebook of people cutting PVC based materials, which creates chlorine gas when laser cut. Seems the issue lies in all materials have risk in some way, we kind of assume with consumer access it must be safe. I too would like to know some comparisons between VOC's or filament types and other common products.

for scaling 3D scans, I think a cool tip I saw was to use a coin or any small object you know that has a standard dimension and scan it with the object your scanning, from there you can scale the scan to the standard dimension of the object.

Something you could consider is using a Raspberry Pi Pico, and an OLED circular display. You might have to get familiar with code, or have someone help you with it, but I'm certain there are tools out there that would let you take that google maps data such as the turn indicator, and display it on the raspberry pi. A smart watch is most definitely NOT the first thing that came to mind when you mentioned a circular display. It was the second or third though. Still, I don't think a watch would be the right tool to use here.
@wilkgrАй бұрын
I think the Sunton 2424S012 would be a great fit. Tiny little circular LCD with an ESP32-C3 on-board (which also solves the connectivity question). It's not OLED but these things are pretty cheap and it might be sufficient. Getting data out of Google Maps into the board is the second question. I think my approach would be to look at Gadgetbridge which (iirc) supports sending navigation data to smartwatches - maybe it'd be possible to implement one of the protocols. The bangle.js one looks pretty simple though it will require re-implementing nordic's uart service.

I would recommend a pebble watch. It's a watch that's been discontinued for a while now and has an open source community. I got one and are really happy with it. It can't do much and it's more of a niche tech item, than a smart watch, but for this, I feel it would be great. It's also got a really simple battery with only two leads and it's not even glued together
@andjohn27 күн бұрын
I actually think this is super cool. You just need active cooling and likely there is a 'keep bright' hack for the watch with ADB. Taking the battery out is smart and I wonder if you used a Ticwatch which has the 2 displays, so when the car is off, it could switch to the LCD screen and when the car is on, it would charge and start the full colour display. Also, they make transreflective displays too, which work way better in cars. Good idea!

@GingerNingerGamesАй бұрын
Two things, there's ESP32 powered units that are essentially a smartwatch that you can program yourself for what you want them to do, no battery, round display, could be made to run off a car. Secondly, I don't understand why google doesn't give more two tiered directions, like waze sometimes, and even google sometimes, gives your direction in bold on top with the next direction slightly greyed out and smaller underneath, and it's very useful for the scenario you mentioned, but it just doesn't do it often enough.

You could point your air-con vent at the watch to keep it cool during charging. If you want to go down the rabbit hole, you could internally vent some air from the air-con duct up into the pillar to the back of the watch. Also, an alternative to ABS is ASA. Prints similarly to ABS but has better UV stability.

Love this. One of the reasons I love keeping a map view even if I'm taking a daily route I know, is that 'mini-map' feel from video games. Anyways, I think this was a good concept, limitations really being the hardware. I would say, you're better of just using Google's feature on the phone showing the upcoming turns while the head unit shows the map. Before going full custom, maybe finding an older smaller phone to use and dedicated solely for the car could work as well, plus the arrows would be more visible.

I’m going to give you a trick for the contour gauge, when you’re measuring, draw a mesh, let’s say 2cm by 2cm squares, and then diagonals on a flat surface, a piece of tape, and then stick that to the part, once done, now use the contour gauge, using the mesh as a guide, create that same mesh on your 3D software, and now you don’t need to scale or anything, and your working with 2cm curve segments, if at any moment you take a measurement within the software and it isn’t around 2cm you know you’re wrong on that specific segment instead of the whole curve, also that way you know where the irregular sides start and end, you have a straight line within the confines of your 2x2 grid.

There has to be a program out there or something you can use. People mentioned the beeline, but what I'm imagining is a second screen that connects via Bluetooth and is a permanent installment. It'd allow you to use both the android auto and your new screen, just like how you can use a smartwatch while using the unit. New cars like my own has the turn by turn in the gauge cluster as well as center screen, meaning it'd be possible to extract that data. It's not easy code I'm sure, but there's probably dev code in Android Auto for it and someone smart enough to try and extract that code.

Love it! This reminds me a lot of the Beeline Moto navigation system, that might work perfectly for you

I believe the thing you have been looking for is the beeline moto 2. It’s exactly what you are trying to create. Check it out. Normally it is used for motorcycle, you are wanting this trust me.

I needed to make a similar thing for my 960 estate. Used the centre vents and it's the best thing for modern classic cars

3:15 you should check out ASA. Not as toxic as ABS but just as strong.

It looks so clean, we need cleaner looking GPS like that. But tbf Waze looks already great sooo

Back in the normal world, you buy the gauge cluster plastic online for your specific car model.

Was wondering why the watch was a better option than your phone or car deck. Glad you figured it out by the end. Fun project. You have a new subscriber.

It is quite entertaining to see the design process. But instead of using the smart watch you could replace it with a navigation system design for motorbikes called Beeline Moto. It too has a touch screen and round form factor and is meant to be visible in direct sunlight so it should be the better alternative to the smart watch

A better thing to do than a watch is you can buy round OLED displays about the size of a smartwatch but idk how you’d connect it to your maps

Bro all you needed was a Royal Enfeild tripper, which is like $50

This is honestly way nicer looking than the Tripper imho

I am not sure if anybody have already mentioned it, but it seems you are searching for something like 'beeline moto 2'(or other beeline products, like the one for bicycles so it will be thinner). It's round, it's think and has a navigation, also it's not dimming cause it's not a wrist watch.

This is so sick! Edit: just remembered beeline makes a moto & cycling version of this that might be easier to hard-wire in than a smart watch

I used to use my Sumsung Gear S2 as my navigator on my motorcycle by wrapping it around the handlebars, it worked great! but the battery went bad quickly overtime and at the end i had to charge it too often to make it worthwile...
