There are lots of different ways to approach the process of designing a mushroom farm, but it basically boils down to 4 main factors:
- Scale / output
- Budget
- Features of the space it is situated in
- Materials available
We discuss each other these and then walk through what each space on a mushroom farm looks like and things to consider in the design process.

Would two 40' shipping containers be enough space to build a lab, incubation room, and a multi sectional fruiting space for different species? Growing using hanging logs is it possible to grow 200lbs a week? I am trying to low cost as much as possible. Under $25k Canadian if possible. I am considering grow tents to isolate species and for ease of cleaning minimizing contamination. I see a lot of people growing in less than sterile conditions but can you have that kind of yield? Oysters cost about $3 at the supermarket there is no competing with that unless you could grow thousands of kilos. Although they only carry white and black and king. Other strains could be sold for higher as they dont exist in stores yet hopefully till my gf and I can get them there. We are not looking to be rich just 60 to 80k profit a year operation would be enough to make us happy.

Exhaust is really the only practical way to deal with spore build up. They'll eventually gunk up your AC if you're growing at scale. The other option is having really good indoor filtration but that's going to add to your maintenance costs.

Why couldn't yo just have long trays, 30 feet long, 4 inches deep and maybe 2 feet wide, lay the substrate in it , cover it w plastic, punch holes all over it and have the shrooms growing straight up. You could have them coming out of the entire setup instead of just here and there from hanging bags?
@ravosavo
@ravosavo 4 жыл бұрын
You could, but there's some reasons you might not want to. Different species have different habits. The oysters, which you saw coming out in clusters on the side of bags fruit that way in nature. They would be on a log, and the mushrooms would erupt from a small basal area- sideways- out of the log. Shitake is pretty much the same, as is Lion's mane. Agaricus bisporus (the button mushroom from the grocery store) fruits exactly as you suggested, and indeed those mushroom farms often use trays that are "cased" with a thin layer of soil to make them fruit standing upright and spread densely, but separately, across the trays surface. Another reason not to do that is contamination. If you get contamination in a large tray of substrate, you could lose more work (and $) than if a bag went bad. That can be dealt with quickly and safely for the other bags of healthy 'shrooms.
