@lasagna32892 жыл бұрын
I think an important part of its design and concept, though, is the mystery, the uncertainty and anticipation, of not knowing if, when it sheds, it will be more beautiful, or if something amazing will be ruined. I still think this could work though. It could be a very _different_ design, not one designed to be explicitly MORE beautiful. One that some could feel is better than its previous shroud, and others could argue that it's worse. And to retain the sense of anticipation, the new form's skin could be loose in some places. You can tell that it has the potential to shed again. You almost feel like you can see new eyes underneath. But how far are you willing to go?

I dont think that this is a good idea, the message of this pokemon is that it COULD be even more beautiful if it molted one more time, but it isn’t sure. The ambiguity of the design is what makes it good, and if he designs a version to look more beautiful, it would mean that the group of modernity is right, and the group of tradition is wrong.
@MicoDossun2 жыл бұрын
Feels like that misses the point of the design
@ZeIfore2 жыл бұрын
I definitely think that it couldn't be just 1 alt forme, obviously. The toughest part is that both of its new forms would need to be equally beautiful, or at least arguably more beautiful depending on personal taste. The prior skin would be adhearing to the beauty standards of old, or a more natural beauty, like the natural elegance of a waterfall or beach sunset. The newer skin would be a more modern beauty, bright colors and strong reflections, like a colorful window pane or bottle. Both would be beautiful in there own right, but many would also agree that the original form held the most true beauty, like an abandon or sunken city overun by nature.

When you talked about drawing the shed skin separately from the pokemon, I had a cool idea for a unique ability, where when the pokemon's HP reaches half, it would dramatically throw its shed skin away like how person in a drama would throw away a cloak to reveal their hidden identity. Doing so would decrease Elirimonda's defensive stats by half, but its offensive stats would double, and any status ailments would be cured.

I understand why people would want you to not talk so much and just get to the drawing, but when it comes to something like character/creature design, I LOVE hearing the thought process behind it. I like to hear what inspires people and how they go about doing every aspect, from choosing what to base a design off of, to how they do sketching, line art, coloring, and rendering. I also really like knowing what tools people use, like in you case an iPad with Procreate. There're always going to be people who don't like something about a certain piece of content, but there will always be those who are the opposite. Just keep doing what you're doing.

This is amazing, Elorimanda looks splendid and majestic. I actually think the tail situation, where the design makes you wonder if it has one or not, somewhat helps with the theme. Since it makes you wonder if it did have a tail, but it was shed, or does it currently have one that is hidden away. But there is something else, Elorimanda doesn’t really have a connection to the order of nature aspect, the prey and predator aspect. This may not be needed, but it is the second biggest aspect of their designs. If you are willing to have another go at this design, possibly a form change for it which interacts with the shed skin, which could play into that more. Even if a third legend doesn’t resemble its counterparts, it still plays into the major themes of the trio. Necrozma being a white/black dwarf plus incorporating prisms, black holes, super novas, and prisms which manipulate light; playing into its trio’s themes of light and celestial bodies. Eturnatus is an ancient evil and a dragon, which tend to play play the antagonist role in legends and are just as crucial role in the formation and retelling of legends. And Kyurem is the wuji to Zekrom and Reshiram’s yin and Yang, a being without any truth or ideals to give it meaning, but has the potential to be filled with either or both, and is the cooling ice of a nuclear generator. These are just examples, but I think you can get the point. I have little idea how you implement that, but looking into other aspects of the balance of nature which are just as essential if not more than the predator prey one may be one angle. Another could be other kinds of diets, omnivores for example, with their own complimentary philosophies may also help Overall all great job and love the design, but just wanted to say my piece

I, like many other artists here I bet, really do relate to the issue of "Not wanting to put too much time on a piece". I personally try to avoid sitting too long on one art peice cause I know that the next day I will most likly hate it and not wanna continue it. Yet one gotta sit back and trust the process and just take the time. I love both designs in this video to be honest. The first really caught my dragon obsessed intrest but do understand why it feel wrong. The new form really caught your eyes and made you guess what it could become. It also played more on the mystery of a third legendary. It felt like it could easily do a reveal at the end where it sheds the last of the skin to become its final form too strong to handle. Almost like it's rage with the humans of the region over them fighting over what it should do (like them fighting over it staying like it is or change further like you mentioned) could cause it to go mad. We all know the pressure of people telling you want to do and what to become. The last form could then be something like "Corrupted beauty becomes beast" -ish. Beauty like a Rose. If you don't handle it right it will make you bleed.

It's funny (and fitting) that the Pokemon themed around the pros and cons of change went through such an extensive design process with so many iterations. Also, while you never mentioned it so I don't know if it's intentional, I can't help but see the face as rather birdlike, with the pink segment looking like a beak, though I assume it's meant to be a chin. I love the design! I like how the cool and warm colors don’t overpower each other, having that mid ground between the box legendaries. The restriction on the face make it almost mysterious, or what the saying goes “hiding their true beauty.” The flow and detail are just super exciting, and makes me want to view it more. I think one thing is that the Pokémon looks a bit like a bird for some reason, it could be because of the beak that I saw. Maybe change it by taking away the beak and using a more pointy snout seen in reptiles would make it stop reading it as a bird.

As an artist who has currently started following my dream of transitioning from pen and paper to digital all the way to pixel art, who also happens to be a fan of pokemon and is currently working on two separate game concepts that I have developed, I love this video. I saw the first iteration of the design and thought oh my gosh it's amazing, then I saw you make new ones and was like no what are you doing it was so good. I then started liking some of the new designs including not fully realized ones. All the way up until the final design where I thought oh my gosh he really did it. I am in love with your final design and can not wait for the fan project to come out so I can play this in the form it was meant to be experienced! Absolutely amazing work on it. I started to realize how what you were saying has been applying to me recently, I have been pumping out over 50 assets for one game and they were good mostly, but I found myself constantly redesigning them completely till I was happy. But with my second game concepts art coming into the picture I stepped back and started taking more time on some of my art, while it's not as crazy as 60+ hours my measly 4 hours texturing a freaking black symbol on an orb meant to represent the element of lumino or the element of light and good took me nearly 4 hours today. For context I spent 4 hours on a single pixel art orb that is approximately 22x22 pixels wide.

for me the end of my university art course is still extended in part because of this ( and other irl issues) but i couldnt be happier with the progress ive made on my characters, having that breathing room to sit down with my designs and ask "what does this charcater want to feel more like them" was i able to comunicate more with myself about what i wanted and how to execute it in my character designs. i really value these deeper process videos Jack, thank you very much, also look how much youve grown with the mazah region! your art growth and mindset has certainly left an impact on me over the years

Not only your drawing was amazing, but this has to be one of my favorite videos. I have to say that I’ve been a long time fan of your channel, but over the years not only your ideas and art has improved but the overall quality of your videos has vastly improved and I can tell you really put a lot of thought in this video and I highly appreciate it. Also thank you for the video because I learned so many new things and you’ve even inspired me, I hope you continue being you and keep being experimental in your own way!

I’ve seen people here ask for alternate forms of this legendary. Personally I think you shouldn’t show these alternatives to the public. Preserving some of this mystery sparks the imagination. Kinda hurts to say something like that since I wanna see the Original Dragon so bad but still. Sometimes things aren’t meant to be known.
@cytochrome.2 жыл бұрын
i agree with you. I feel like it would be a good personal thing to know how it looks pre shed or even post shed, that’s something that shouldn’t be canonically released. the halfway is always going to be the point.

I actually love when artists create high quality art but dont have a constant or fast upload schedule. It's one of those rare instances where I'm really excited to watch a video because I know its gonna be good, not just something to satisfy the audience. Keep doing what you're doing! 😁👍

The whole way this design came from shedding the old designs, but retaining elements that worked is pretty poetic. There's also the idea of taking your time, and making change slow and steady. It's works in being the middle ground of tradition and progress. Like "make your progress, but pace yourself"
@ethanemerson48622 жыл бұрын
I know I mentioned this in the last Pokémon video, but Maybe there can be another legendary Pokémon that serves as an antagonist. One that would threaten traditionalism and change alike. We have the first predator and the first prey, but what about the first scavenger? A creature that wants to watch everything burn so that it can feed on what is left behind. (Edit: maybe it can have “Diablo” somewhere in the name?)

This is probably my favorite video of your's. It's so interesting to see your in-depth process on designing. All your ideas are great and seeing you whittling it down to a sleek final design is fantastic

Controversial opinion (and not to downplay all the work that went into it) but I actually don't like the final version as much as the original! Something about the weight and thickness of the shed skin on the original just appeals to me, and I'm kinda sad it didn't make it to the final. While the final has some beautiful colors and is undeniably a better design for the goals it had in mind... I dunno, I just don't like it as much. It doesn't have the same instant appeal to me, the same graceful charm and tactility of the original. Maybe it's just me though.
@iantaakalla81802 жыл бұрын
I do also think that for all the bulkiness of the original, the first design was a very elegant design, like a queen disrobing her official clothes. In fact, given the insides of the shed skin of Elorimanda, that Smaugust drawing may be a valid pre-shedding Elorimanda as proof that those who say it was beautiful before it shed its skin.
@iantaakalla81802 жыл бұрын
It also helps that it looks more like a disrobing instead of a shedding of skin, so those skin parts could instead be flaking skin.

I really love this new version and the process behind it, I imagine how meta it can be if the old design is how it looked before it shed. Also I always like listening to you explain different concepts and design philosophies in your videos so it is always very interesting when you make a video like this!

Elorimanda and their design process really speaks to me. Some things I design I love so much that a years-old design I redo just doesn’t capture what the original had, and other times I feel like bashing my head into my sketchbook because I just can’t get a design right. This is probably the first time I’ve really wondered what I could do if I just stop for a moment and think about what I’m designing one piece at a time. Doing that is hard, though! But changing your entire approach to design (or a single design) isn’t easy, and it is a bit like shedding your skin to do what you do in an entirely new way. Thank you for Elorimanda and thank you for reminding me to give myself some time.

it's so thematically fitting for elorimanda to warrant this monologue. don't ever stop speaking or elaborating, your creative process is so telling and powerful and i simply adore this glimpse into it all

I just want to say, as an amateur character designer who has been stressing out over a fan project I joined. I really needed to hear this. at the start I was able to pump out a few designs per week, and it's not that I wasn't putting thought into them either, I just already had a clear idea of what I wanted the characters to look like. but for plenty of both physical and mental reasons, my character designs started taking longer and Ive been endlessly frustrated with some of them. its been hard to keep the design conventions of the canon material, and make the designs accurate to the characters themselves. and honestly? it hasn't been fun in a long time. but seeing that even a professional like you are dealing with similar issues and the way you tackled this design has made it so much easier for me to try to see my process from a new perspective and get back into the swing of things. I've been a fan of your channel for years and your mindset of constantly finding ways to improve and being able to pick up the pieces even if things aren't turning out the way you originally planned has been a lifesaver for me, and I'm happy I rediscovered your channel as I started doing more serious character design work.

i love that elorimanda's body points to one side and yet its gaze is to the other side, and that this small detail makes it not look like it's siding with either of the other two legendaries. Yet another amazing work and it was as amazing to watch all the process behind this design.

The new design is so much better than any prior draft. The new identity that you developed by making the shed skin behave like bandage wrappings is awesome and where the head originally looked too much like the other legendarys, it now had a very distinct almost avian feel that I like.

You designed the most perfect Pokemon to have a paradox form! The past form would be the shed skin pre-shed, and the future form would be the fully shedded Elorimanda

I absolutely love this final design for elorimanda, the middle ground between past and future with it holding onto it's past and and hinting at it's future combined with the asymmetry gives me kyrem vibes, like maybe one can harness some aspect of the others to either regress them back to their previous state, fusing them with their shed skin to return to their previous strong state emulating the tradition legendary and getting a more physical intensive stat line, or they could harness the capacity of change to have them not only shed their shed skin but molt again, revealing a glorious and sleak newer design unhindered by the last with a more special stat spread, and have the base form be kinda split between the 2, like it's trying to break out of the physical shell but it's being held back by it's attachment to it's past skin like you had mentioned, making it's lower power moves being physical but it's higher power moves being special, or maybe vice versa if the designer decides it fitting

I keep coming back to this video. Art block is hard and I’ve been stuck in circles with my cover legendaries right now as well, and this video answers to my thoughts almost word for word. Really great work pushing through on each iteration and landing on that amazing final design to turn everything around - I’ve had similar experiences with some designs, and I know how rewarding it is to finally get there. Thanks for all your videos, you’re truly a gem to the character design community.
