"So at the end of it, I'll basically end up with like a Nintendo Switch but with worse performance, worse battery life, and probably bad build quality." This part made me crack up haha, looking forward to seeing how it turns out if you ever get to it!

I've been looking to do the same thing. If I can't make a handheld I'll do a bartop arcade cabinet.
@ComputerClubShow4 жыл бұрын
I was thinking of doing a bartop too! I’m drawn to the idea of using a small CRT but I’m second guessing it because of the high voltage.

you need a chip with a x86 cpu instead of arm cpu of the pi 4 to be able to run relatively new games

I am trying to make a handheld myself but I got super lucky with purchases and managed to get everything for about half price. I am gonna be making the controller design based on an xbox controller mainly because I have big hands and the switch size controllers get uncomfortable fast which is a shame what you using that seems alot more convenient to do.
@ComputerClubShow4 жыл бұрын
Yeah the Switch controller does kind of cramp up after a while. I was thinking I’d like to add some larger handgrips on the back. Are you using wireless or USB?

Excellent video! I don’t think I will be able to build one myself, but I am definitely going to follow your videos. I wish I could have the skills and equipment (I am originally a dev, but I have always been bad at any electric tinkering of that level). How much do you think all pieces cost you? Excluding the joy cons (or including, whatever you prefer). Keep it up!
@ComputerClubShow4 жыл бұрын
I got the joycons from kijiji (like Craigslist but popular in Canada) for around $50 I think. I forget, it was a little while back. The Pi, screen, and HDMI ribbon cables cost about $220 CAD. I just got the PSU and a battery which will cost around $100 CAD. So I’m already well over $300. 😅

@@ComputerClubShow Hey! Fellow Canadian here :) I ended up ordering a Retro PSU and battery recently. My overall cost is probably higher, as I decided to go with the "soldering my own buttons and dpad" route, which makes this project have even less sense but so much fun haha. Like I said to a friend: I am going to build a poor man's Switch to play old games that's going to cost me more, take me dozens of hours, will be a lot less powerful and have massively worst build quality. Fun stuff, right? For the joycons, you're going to use them only via Bluetooth, right? No joycon rail replacement with ways to charge them or whatnot? This seems to be possible, but massively under documented. I didn't find any joycon Bluetooth driver that seemed legit enough but I might try to find one until I figure out how to do soldering of those buttons and work with GPIO stuff, print my case (will be cardboard for the first prototype, though).

I wouldn't get the Waveshare 5.5" AMOLED screen anyway. I have one and it has severe screen tearing, especially in landscape mode. The Pi currently doesn't have the power to rotate the screen properly and the Waveshare screen doesn't have hardware rotation on the controller. I'm using the Osoyoo 5" DSI screen. I'm also using a Teensy (you could use an arduino) with the anduino Xinput library making it act as a XBox 360 controller. Also, look at the Pimoroni fan shim ( shop.pimoroni.com/products/fan-shim ) .

My LCD had a lot of screen tearing too u too I disabled the xcompmgr. Have you tried that with the amoled? m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIPcm2Sqr9uZhck
@MysticWhiteDragon.4 жыл бұрын
@@ComputerClubShow Unfortuanately that doesn't work properly. It's an issue with the Pi not having the horsepower to rotate the screen 90 or 270 degrees. The Waveshare screen doesn't have hardware rotation on the board which makes the Pi do all the work. Also, the Waveshare screen is portrait (1080x1920) not landscape (1920x1080) which is the primary problem. If it was a landscape screen, then it would have been perfect. The Osoyoo d" DSI screen works great without having to do anything.
@MysticWhiteDragon.4 жыл бұрын
@@ComputerClubShow FYI, I got and tested the Wisecoco 5.5" screen and it works perfect. Only issue tearing is in Google Chromium on linux, but that's because it is using software rendering not hardware. It works fine everywhere else, except some slowdowns in KODI.

I just googled that brand and it looks like they’ve got a few different 5.5’s. Which resolution did you choose? Does it support touch?
