The Washington State Department of Transportation is correcting barriers along state highways that block salmon and other fish from upstream habitat. Learn more about the process these projects go through during the design phase before construction begins.

Saw some seasonal streams (meaning they only have water part of the year) get million dollar road funding. This program is pork barrel and unnecessary in many instances.

They are legally obligated to rebuild most fish culverts as part of a court ruling. You'll have to Google it.

@@JakeRoot So they rebuild ones that are incapable of supporting fry? That makes them incompetent in the least and definitely malicious with taxpayers' money.

@@b_uppy in areas of Western Washington that support salmon runs (mistake on my part; not all culverts), a court injunction in 2013 requires them to replace culvert to not inhibit the salmon runs. It doesn't matter if it's malicious or anything. It's just the way it is. The court is forcing them to do it.

@@JakeRoot They are doing it to culverts that don't support salmon, period. If they go dry, they don't support salmon...

@@b_uppy but are they going dry because they weren't built properly? Most of these culverts are supposed to be designed to allow Indian tribes to fish, as they are federally permitted to do, and the tribes have more power than WSDOT in these circumstances.
