Welcome to What If cars! In this series we are going to make alternative universe cars, based on my own fantasies or your request!
In this episode, we take a look at the sudden rise of artificial intelligence, or AI. The technology is able to creat images and text out of thin air. Can it help us design fictional cars? What will AI do for the car industry?

I think the really big thing for AI currently is how much inspiration it allows. You can really throw things at the AI and it'll spit out, while usually garbage, really interesting ideas that could be applies to an actual design.
@robertnicholls9917

That's how I see AI currently. At the moment, it's not good at spitting out good form balanced with functional cues but it can inspire your process. In about 5 years AI might be more resolved but even then, I don't think it will be able to mimic the random abstractions designers fall into by exploiting happy accidents in an attempt to create good balance. A good designer will edit any AI generated piece or use it as a starting point but not for anything final. At best, you could use it to modify each iteration of a design to achieve a final resolution. I think a lot of people who are lazy think it's a catch all tool. Those who understand design can see it's limitations, which will change drastically in 5 years if the approach is more than just an engineering problem. As for now, it's just another tool, in my opinion, and doesn't make those who are dedicated to real design expertise obsolete. That's just a hoop dream to those who see everything under the guise of profit only. People with such mindsets will fail catastrophically, mark my words. I've already seen examples of it when it comes to writing. There is a random abstraction that it can't currently imitate. But, to be fair, average consumers may not notice such minute design decisions, where millimeters matter. Any company dumb enough to rely solely on AI at this point is setting themselves up for failure.

The real problem with this form of ai is when every car design office has been using it for say ten years; what images do you feed it - since all the existing models on the road were created by the same ai, potentially every design might devolve to a single common model.

It's kinda fun for stuff like that. Recently got into customizing model cars and the other day I sank over two hours into making ideas with BlueWillow (no daily generation limit, just a limit on your number of concurrent jobs) to pump out ideas for a Ferrari pickup truck, basically exploring what if the Italians ever decided to make an Australian Ute, but with all the stylistic bells and whistles.

I used to work in the fine art business. While doing that, I realised what makes people respond to any particular artwork (and the same thing can be said of any object in which styling is a component). It’s the spark of inspiration captured within it. Not the colour, or the utility, or the materials. It’s the element of humanity that created the work out of nothing and reaches beyond it to connect with the observer. It is the lack of that spark that consigns everything AI makes to being synthesised - derivative, not creative.

Take the concept of AI driven car design, with a 3D CAD output, then add a modular "skateboard" EV platform. Be able to design and have created (3D printed) a body to go on a frame that suits a particular requirement (storage space, passenger capacity, specific industrial fleet vehicle requirements, etc .). Could lead to a future where roads all have unique or custom designed cars perfectly suited to task.

I don't think that ai will replace the whole design team or engineer team as they would likely have to make sure the ai did as asked. What I think it could do is quickly take multiple designs fed to it by the design team and iterate extremely fast. This could lead to better designs you know people will like.

It's not AI. These are just very complex filtering algorithms that do what they are programed to do. For example the chat bots are programmed to ignore logic in favor of the programmer's politics while these art generators don't understand the functionality of the objects they are rendering, they're just compiling images with emphasis on reoccurring themes. No decision making, just filtering. Not AI.

So perhaps these kinds of innovations are more effective in the correct hands.... its very interesting to watch, it may also come down to who owns the data from which these AI systems are harvesting. Can it innovate in self feeding data loop? or will it be junk in junk out?

It's always important to mention one core point when it comes to AI. Despite its name, AI is not actual intelligence and never will be. The most annoying feature of those AI based channels is they always display the end result of it, something regular people may never manage to get considering the lack of documentation on all of the options available and the fact you have to know how the algorithm works to get good tweaks out of it. Most of the great results are often the results of multiple collages and generations focused on single features of the image in question.

6:45 - Yes you are going a bit too far. We are not quite there yet and will not be for a while. The AI you are seeing now is more or less smoke and mirrors, it works with a relatively small problem set (language model) and converting that to visual or text representation. However the computing power to consider the vast engineering details such as mechanically functional designs, heating and cooling restrictions, weather effects and ease of maintenance to name a few examples all into the equation are far from being achieved yet. This is because of the "memory wall" that AI currently has. The easy way to think of all this is using the backpack problem. If you have a backpack that is a of specific dimensions and holds a specific weight and you need to pack this by choose from a selection of objects that vastly outnumbers that you can fit, however you need to prioritize based on weight, size and importance. The latter are called parameters. Now imagine many many of these objects with hundreds of parameters of all varying weights all being evaluated by a computer to achieve the best combination of objects in that pack. It would take a lot of memory to keep track of, this is why a human would be lousy at this task and a general computer can only solve this though recursion. The learning models suffer from this problem, it has been only recently that computing power and the transform engine can handle language model.

What I find interesting is that AI is a reflection of the thinking of the people that developed it. Ultimately, it's just a machine following rules, but it's the humans that send it in particular directions that they consider desirable.

My friend and I actually started a tumblr where we render whatif cars. It's been very fun so far and I honestly really enjoy creating a flying car from the 1990's, and stuff like that.

These kind of exercises prove that styling is hard. Its like the generic cars they put in video games like GTA V. The styling is just off, something doesn't flow or look right. Knowing how to make it look right is a skill I will always envy. Cheers Harley Earl and Bill Mitchell for being such masters.

That might be a fun project. Best looking video game cars. The Corvega Atomic V8 in Fallout 3 was handsome. Some of the cars in the original Mafia got me into 30's cars, but none of them hold a candle to the real things. But it piqued my interest in Cadillac V16s.

While this could endanger design teams, I see this as an opportunity for a lot of smaller manufacturers to interrupt the big ones. No longer needing massive space, you could rnd and build a car in a small warehouse anywhere. This could even lead to a point where luxury cars are completely unique one offs

There is a reason why Bertone and Pininfarina booked the well paid gigs they got. No AI , just pen, paper , and then clay. Maybe some CAD renderings these days. When you are a genius , all of this tech gibberish becomes superfluous. Italians can’t build a car that will last trouble free. But sure as heck they can design cars we desire.

After making a few thousand generations with Dalle then Stable diffussion of anything I could think of, I've settled on generating thousands of car designs. I created so many historical versions of modern cars, modern versions of historical cars, awesome mashups with the Delorean, Viper, Ferrari, etc. It's an amazing tool to explore nascent ideas, concepts and variations but not yet very good at representing an exact vision, sometimes you can't even guide it properly. I've made mashups with the Dodge Viper and often the viper influence was much too strong for the vision I had. I had a difficult time reducing that to the amount I wanted without losing it completely, though it's improving very fast. Fun times ahead.

When the printing press was invented, it uprooted the lives of many. But also paved way for newer jobs that were more specialised. We can probably see the same happen in the future

theres one thing it always succeeds at: the Chrysler revival. far better than the actual designers, or perhaps the cut down gimped reality the design became after it left the designer's hands. that 2000's Cordoba is brilliant.

The main thing I want to see is to see what those Chrysler big tailfin cars would look like without the sharp fins, or at least toned down significantly. In fact, it would be interesting to see what most of the US cars from that era would look like if most of the bulging features were blended into smoother, more streamlined designs.

The last Lincoln shown looks the most Lincoln of all. The thing is that the concept car for the last Continental a lot more along those lines and came out a lot better than the production car did. All done without a/i.

My biggest concern with such a smart IA, is : how we humans will earn our livings? Will IA pay taxes high enough to provide salaries to humans left without a job? Will there be a human power left to forbid IA from enslaving us?

Nice video and you touched on a legitimate concern. I worry that the non-creative decision makers will be impressed by what they see and question the role of the professional auto designer and design department. AI does have potential to speed up the creative work flow but the onus is on us to avoid what could be a disaster.

Speaking of AI with both Images & Data Base(s) with Existing Parts as Data Sheets with Specifications, it could help Marketing, Styling, The Evil Bean Counters, & Engineering (1) Manage Existing model's parts for use on new models way more effectively (Tail Lights, Brake Calipers & Rotors, etc. etc. (2) Help to decide where to Branch out & where to keep similar "looks". Having worked Big 3, AI can NOT prevent EXEC THUMBPRINTS.

AI is the future, even though it shouldn't be. You've provided further proof that it's not ready for prime time, and the underlying constructs of the system mean it will never be. Yet we will use it - and find out too late that we shouldn't have. The only reason it appears to be viable is because so few people use their real brains these days. AI is and will remain too much Artificial and not enough Intelligence.

There are a few glitches with predicting possible 'what if' cars into their future. In 1960, the last Edsel dropped the vertical oval grill and switched to a more Pontiac-like split grill. Theoretically, Edsels from then on would have split grills and not tall oval ones. Maybe if Edsel survived into the retro 2000's they would have revived that grill as a nostalgic touch but we will never know. Oddly enough, if you want to see a modern car with a vaguely Edsel-like grill, take a look at the latest Alfa Romeros.

Wow, this video just really points out that people don't know how design works or how A.I. works. Design is a synthesis of so many things other than just graphics. Currently, A.I. is an inputed algorithm and an amalgamation of images fed in from internet storage drives. I don't see this tool as a replacement but a way to further imagination to accelerate the creative and engineering process. A.I. by itself with a non-designer at the helm will produce a baseline result. Kind of like ready made fonts. Design is always intellectual combined with art to produce something more amazing then the some of it's parts. Honestly, that is the beauty of the human brain when properly trained and exercised. Give it it's due.
