When the movie released, I read somewhere that the message they wanted to convey was that even if you are the perfect spouse (like Abhishek & Preity's characters), it is possible that your partners may not appreciate you. It is possible that someone might fall for a toxic person over you. And that is not your fault. But the movie sold the opposite message because of poor execution.

I don't exactly think it ended up saying the opposite thing, but yeah Dev and Maya being the central characters to the story, and played by massive superstar actors, might have made more people to root for them than they otherwise would have. But they were never shown as the 'good guys'....the film attempted to show all the characters as complex, nuanced characters, not unidimensional heroes and villains.

The entire point of the plot is how shahrukh and rani go from complaining about each others spouses and feeling constricted by them to them realizing that they were the toxic ones in their marriages. They are extremely morally grey characters and I was surprised at this being a karan johar film and also getting so much attention at its time.

Its crazy how when I was a kid I was rooting for SRK and Rani to get together and I recently rewatched this movie and realised I was romanticising toxicity and infidelity. Omkara finished earlier, so we just strolled into the other audi to see the status of their movie. When I first watched the movie I was probably 13, I rooted for srk n rani. N in my eyes , Abhishek n prety Zinta were the villian. But ,in reality Srk n rani were the main problem. Similar thing happened with me in real life too. My cousin got involved with a married woman , she was a mother of two. He was very young. When the husband came to knew about it , they fought. N actually my cousin ended up beating him , n I was kinda rooting for my cousin at that time cuz I was in High school too . N I didn't knew what infedility really was. The husband was my father's work friend. The sad part is , everybody automatically assumed that the husband was maybe toxic or a abusive husband. But he was not . Infact he was sweet and humble. It took time for him to heal n move on. He gave himself a second chance, married again . The wife is a gem. As for my cousin , he never had a peaceful day after that. She left him went to Kolkata after sometime. He became sad , alone and lonely. But after five years , she called him n they got together. The sad part , he recently cheated on her . But those two toxic people are still together. 🤢🤢🤢.

I think, the problem in Rishi and Maya's relationship was, that Maya was staying with Rishi and her father from her childhood. so Maya always treat Rishi's father as her father. and i guess she used to considere rishi as her brother, that's why in the beginning of film, she was hesitating for marrying Rishi. maybe that is why she felt uncomfortable whenever Rishi try to do romantic stuffs with her
