First Day in Moldova - Exploring Chisinãu 🇲🇩

Gonna be a long read. Having grown up in communist Bengal and being connected to Russia through my in-laws, I’ve had the opportunity to engage with Russian culture and history to a significant extent. My moderate fluency in Russian and my travels across various erstwhile Soviet republics have given me a unique perspective on the region's post-1991 trajectory. What I’ve observed is both striking and sobering. Except for Azerbaijan, nearly all former Soviet republics have struggled immensely since the dissolution of the USSR. Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Armenia, and Moldova are prime examples of countries grappling with economic instability, social fragmentation, and political challenges. Moldova, in particular, stands as a stark example of this decline. The country is in disarray, with many of its people residing in the breakaway region of Transnistria (or "Prednistria," as referred to by Russians). The situation there mirrors the devastation seen in war-torn regions like Iraq. People long for the Soviet era, a time they associate with stability, purpose, and dignity. Post-1991, the rapid transition to capitalism and the rise of oligarchic structures wreaked havoc on these nations. The economic systems that replaced centralized planning often exacerbated inequality, entrenched corruption, and stripped away the sense of collective identity. The promise of a brighter, capitalist future proved to be an illusion for many. The Soviet Union, in its essence, was more than just a geopolitical entity; it was a vision of a modern civilization-a "civilization from the future." Its emphasis on universal education, scientific progress, and collective welfare fostered a society where aspirations extended beyond mere material wealth. For those who grew up in the USSR, the memories of that era are often tinged with a deep sense of pride and nostalgia, a testament to the cultural and societal milestones it achieved.

The Soviet union had its pros, like some stability and everybody had work. It went quite well the first 20-25 years and they competed for example with USA in the space. In the last 20 years though it went downhill faster and faster and in the end it couldnt sustain itself. The reason it went downhill was probably because of lack of incentive to improve and thats why they stagnated. The time after Soviet collapse was quite catastrophic for eastern Europe and worse than living in Soviet, but Soviet was a dead project in the end.
