With the growth of my channel and all of the new content I am working on it seems that the venerable 500GB drive in my desktop I use for video editing just isn't cutting it so in this video I crack open a whopping Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB USB 3.0 drive to extract the 2.5" 5400RPM 9.5mm Sata drive to replace it. The best part is that there was virtually no damage to the enclosure so I ended up putting the old drive inside so it's win win for me.
I've posted a link for Ebay purchase referrals. Full disclosure: I'm trying out something new, if you use the link below then I get a small kickback from your purchase (it will cost you nothing, I just get paid for referring customers).

Yeah, I don't bother saving a failing hdd (just get as much data off as I can, bin it and buy a new drive). This was more for getting the drive cheaper by shucking it from an external than buying an internal (funny how economies of scale make buying an external cheaper than a bare drive of the same size).

I've been using the exact drive INTERNALLY in my desktop since I made this video and it still works flawlessly. I must've put thousands of hours of operation on it by now. If yours dies without the usb bridge then you are misinterpreting the cause of failure and it's either due to a manufacturing fault, misuse, or normal wear after much use. There is absolutely no technical nor scientific reason the drive needs the usb bridge to continue functioning.

I suspect seagate has made the sata bridge detect something about the original drive that makes the indicator work. I've swapped the drives in two of mine and the same thing happened, the indicator LED stops working but everything else works fine.

If there's a graphics card then hold onto it, the hdd will always be useful so long as it's in good condition, and the ram is potentially useful so long as it's new enough (ddr3/4). The cpu may or may not be useful depending on the specs and if you plan on doing a frankenbuild sometime in the future.

How to get to platters? Which screws to loose and where are they?
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 2 жыл бұрын
Uncovering the platters will likely destroy the drive unless done in a cleanroom. If you still want to anyway, there's usually a few torx screws on the top of the drive and one or two hiding under the label sticker near the actuator arm pivot and platter center. Then you can pry the top metal lid to break the seal and get inside.

Hi it is because I have seen your guide and I want to do the same thing as you just with a Seagate Game Drive for PS4 External Hard Drive instead of and you skipped the part where you used the hair dryer and I just want to know how you did it I bought a Philips DryCare Prestige hair dryer HP8280 and I was wondering how I should do it did you just did it by using the lowest heat and I wanted to put a Samsung 870 QVO 8000GB 2.5" Serial ATA-600 inside the hard drive case in closure can I put one in there?🙂
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 3 жыл бұрын
I used medium heat (though high will probably be fine so long as you move it around the outer edge of the top enclosure lid to soften the adhesive there). Then you can use something thin like a dull knife, guitar pick or credit card to start at a corner to lift the metal lid from the plastic. From there slowly slide along to release one side of the lid. Reheat with the hairdryer when it starts cooling off. Once you get three sides off the lid should very easily pop completely off. As for putting a 8TB sata drive inside the enclosure, it may or may not work depending on the usb controller seagate used. Some drives' controller have a max limit of the size drive they can recognize. I haven't tested what the max is for the drive I opened in this video.

Why do you do what Morton Hojarth does and use a HP Proliant DL580 GEN9 with 6TB of ECC RAM and 12 SATA/SAS drives in RAID 10 might be a little bit noisy but replacing the cooling fans with Noctua fans aught to cut the racket the unit kicks up to a tolerable level, you might be able to get rid of the ESXI and replacing the OS with Windows 10 and SONY VEGAS for the video editing package, you might say that the HP Proliant is expensive but WEB Providers are replacing HP Proliant DL580 Gen9 with Lenovo Blade servers and selling off the old units on EBAY.

@jessepetrini
@jessepetrini 6 жыл бұрын

@sjm4306
@sjm4306 6 жыл бұрын
Jesse Petrini By countersunk I mean they are flush with the surface under the sticker so it looks like aren't even there. My advice would be to open the drive in as clean of an area as possible and once you get it up and running backup the most important data since once you open a drive it might work for a year or a only few minutes if you are unlucky. Any sort of contamination like dust that gets inside can destroy the drive. Good luck!

Usb 3 on average on my machines has a bottleneck somewhere around 100-125MB/s while sata 3 is closer to hundreds of MB/s so definitely speed. First though I'd suggest doing a surface scan and taking a look at the smart data for the drive as it could be a hardware issue with the drive itself causing the issues.

Sounds like the drive is damaged. Even seemingly relatively short drops can kill mechanical drives, especially while the drive is on and spinning. Or it could be some random drive failure like bearings seizing or the heads getting stuck. Can you mount it to a computer and try to look at the smart data using something like crystaldisk?

@sjm4306 damn, that's quite a risk for the almost 2Tbs of data in that drive. Can't even migrate them to a different drive for a reformat as I don't have any other drive that big. Is it a high risk? Meaning, are exFAT formats susceptible to frequent 'data corruption'? Curious.
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 3 жыл бұрын
It's not that it'll corrupt more frequently per se than ntfs, just that since there's no journaling so from my understanding if there is a corruption there's no means to recover the lost data like there would be with ntfs. From personal experience I've lost data on exfat much more frequently than on ntfs so I only use exfat with redundant storage or for temporary file transfers. Also I believe there's a way to convert a partition from exfat to ntfs without erasing data but that also has a risk of wiping the data so they advise backing everything up anyways.

I have that exact same issue actually on two of these enclosures so it isn't just a fluke. I have a sneaking suspicion that seagate is either checking the drive to see if it has their branding or maybe the firmware on their drives have something special that makes that indicator work.

I actually just did a ps4 upgrade recently (unfortunately didn't film it though). The target drive will be wiped and formatted once in the ps4 so you don't need to do anything special to it before installation. Like you mentioned though you need to backup the original drive using the utility in the ps4 settings menu to another external drive and will need the ps4 firmware os recovery downloaded from sony's ps4 site. It's totally more annoying than it could be but sony always tends to go nuts with antipiracy measures that just end up punishing legit paying customers. In a perfect world you'd be able to plug the new drive into usb and just clone the original drive using only the ps4 itself and just swap the drives but instead you need at least one extra external drive to create an intermediary backup and reload the os back on.
