He plays exquisitely clean in this recording. A brilliant demonstration of the Paganini caprices for students !

Desmond Bradley played in the London orchestras. He was leader or associate leader. In the seventies, his performance of the caprices was broadcast on U.K tv. He wrote and performed a violin concerto in the unusual key of B flat minor. Unusual for the violin, I mean.

Les caprices 4 & 5 sont très impressionnants et les octaves des 7 et 15èmes caprices sont très belles . Un magnifique violoniste pas assez connu !

Well that is impressive and I am very sorry to say (especially as a fellow Australian) I had never ever heard of him before. There is a write up about him on the Queen Elisabeth competition website as he was a Laureate in 1959.

I well recall when this came out. Haven’t heard since then. Good to hear comparisons with some of the modern players.

Sensational playing.. My only comment is how mechanical the playing is. It's astonishingly clean and accurate, but guided by a concept that these are merely etudes. Therefore, not a scintilla of musicality to my ears. The years since this was recorded have shown a real effort on the part of modern players to infuse cantilena, rubato, and give us a demonstration of the violin's capacity for lyricism. So, i listened to his Brahms Vln Cto and a few other selections. There, I do see he is indeed musical. So, i can't quibble with what is a choice. By the way, I find his tempi to be often similar to one another, and faster than most great violinists would dare try. So, a great unknown virtuoso to be sure. Thanks Hector's for yet another delightful revelation!

Chiarezza assai rara e grande musicalita' . Non credo sia il vero spirito paganiniano ( un po' "casinista" : ottimo Ricci ) ma a me piace .
