Desmond Howard talks end of football era with Saban & Belichick out, Michigan National Champs, Green Bay vs Dallas WildCard matchups, CJ Stroud success & opens up on the scandal of Emmy's being revoked for him and his ESPN College Gameday hosts.
One of the most iconic moments in football history came from one of the game’s most prolific players, and it didn’t even happen during a play. When Michigan star Desmond Howard struck the Heisman pose against Ohio State in 1991, he cemented his legacy as a college football great and etched his name in football history books.
Fresh off of his alma mater's big National Championship win this week, the former Heisman winner and MIchigan great Desmond Howard, sits with Ryan, Channing and Fred to chat about his life on and off the field from growing up in impoverished parts of Cleveland to his NFL legacy as a Super Bowl MVP for Green Bay to his proudest accomplishment, being a good husband and father.
Witnessing the change of football over the years, especially at college level, Desomd talks what it means for the game with legends of Nick Saban and Bill Bilichick stepping away from coaching and how NIL has lessened the competition mindset and added to entitlement for young athletes.
Today, Desmond is known as one of the most pleasant people in sports media and has become a staple on ESPN’s College Gameday broadcasts. However, in a recent scandal with the Sports Emmys, Desmond and his fellow co-hosts of College GameDay had their statues taken back from them when a scandal was uncovered by the television academy of listing fake names for talent to win in categories. Desmond opens up for the first time as the news is breaking and shares the one thing that really pushed him to the edge in the entire situation, Lee Corso losing his too.
With divorced parents and an atmosphere filled with gangs, drugs and violence, Desmond’s adversity in high school and college only helped motivate him to outwork his situation. Yet as he was told in an impromptu meeting with famous Dr. Harry Edwards, there is a struggle that must be. A man whose biggest moments transcended college football forever is etched into the minds of fans both new and old. By approaching football and life with gratitude, he has no regrets, and the smile people see on TV is the same one Desmond Howard has away from it.
New episodes drop on Tuesdays at 12 p.m. ET and Fridays at 3:30 p.m ET on KZbin, with audio available on all streaming platforms including Apple, Spotify and Amazon.

Love this interview because it actually gave fans of college football who grew up in the 90’s a chance to celebrate a hero. Desmond Howard was that dude back at Michigan and I’ve watched him for longer than I can remember on College Gameday. This interview provided a chance to really know more about him and his personality. To that point, Desmond Howard is cool as hell. Great interview for him to utilize the platform and “LANK”.

I was blessed growing up watching Big 10 games in WI and then as a Packer fan, picking him up in 96 and watching him all season gain 1335 yards on punts and kick offs...(that is 83 return yards per game) and scoring 3 TDS then before the Super Bowl, New England special teams players saying they not gonna let Desmond score on a kick off...and he does. Cant believe we let him go the following season. I understand he wanted to be more than a special teams player.

Desmond and I are Day 1 friends. Came up from kindergarten together. Good brother. Shoutout to Mr. JD Howard. He picked Des up from my house everyday after basketball practice. Eventually he started coming to our rec league basketball practice everyday! Then he became the assistant coach. IMO as an observer... Mr. Howard was a critical part of Des becoming a professional player and a good man. Salute.

Remember meeting him when he came to talk to my high school football team. Up to that point, in my mind, he was like this mystical figure, legend of legends, in the football world, besides seeing him all the time on College GameDay. I mean, he still is to me 😂 but I just remember him talking to my team about this great game we call football, giving us motivation and such, and how classy, graceful, kind, respectful, and humble he was. Awesome dude to talk to. He took a picture with me and two of my bros after talking to us along with his autograph and its one of favorite memories in life ever especially as a former player/football fan.
