Might be the best horror movie ever made in my book. It has isolation. Nobody can help them from the outside. It has paranoia. Can't trust nobody, not even yourself. It has frightening scenes with fantastic special effects. It has suspense and slow pace when it needs to. The atmosphere is amazing, unnerving and chilling, helped by the soundtrack. It's dark and doesn't have a happy ending. I also love that it's very Lovecraftian: There's this mysterious being nobody can explain, we don't know how it truly looks like, and there's nothing the characters can do to stop it. Man, I love this movie. Sad it wasn't so accepted back in the day as it is today.

What I find so chilling about this piece is that for the first 25 seconds it is one solitary note. The note is like a heartbeat and then it is joined by another, but different, an alien heartbeat. The two continue through together until the end. One does not take over the other, it blends with it. Like this piece of music itself is a representation of The Thing hiding within a man.
@necrosunderground2 ай бұрын
Part of the reason for that comes from an early idea that the Thing could be identified by its heartbeat, which never changed pace, no matter what it was doing physically. That was going to be how they tested each other, but it ended up being scrapped for the blood test.

That's part of why this is my favorite horror movie of all time. You are totally isolated with no chance at help and you don't know who you can trust. The THING is so insidious that after watching the movie at least 100 times I am still not sure if McReady or Childs was infected. :)

I love how the alien in the movie is really alien. By the way it mimics other intelligent organisms, it is obvious that it's a sentient being but a completely alien intelligence incomprehensible to humans. There is no possibility for contact, understanding or covenant between it and man. Truly a Thing.

I was literally a little worried because I knew my dad still liked watching Black and White movie’s. We sat down middle of the Theater, the Helicopter comes chasing this beautiful Husky dog…. Picture this. Winter, 1982, Antarctica. A Helicopter of the United States Marine Corps is flying in the Arctic, seemingly to investigate Research Outpost North 31, which went silent. Out of the 12 crew, there were only two bodies found, the Mechanic and the Helicopter pilot, was Pilot was freezing, but alive, he was identified as R.J. MacReady. The Mechanic, named Childs, was not alive, he died of hypothermia, MacReady was rushed to the Marine Helicopter and took off, leaving the rest of the Marines to investigate the Outpost. Imagine that with this music. Also, here, in this fanfic, both Childs and MacReady are human.

It's my understanding that Ennio never got to see a final version of the film to sit and session over, so he composed a bunch of themes and variations. Carpenter used this very one as the main piece and then filled in the gaps where Ennio couldn't. Carpenter basically just followed Ennio's lead (some of the unused themes from this movie are in The Hateful Eight!)
@horrorfanandy4647 Жыл бұрын
@@Jessperado Ennio never watched the films before he scored them, he read the script and composed pieces based on that. Sergio Leone had the score to For a Few Dollars More before he began shooting, he would play it on set to get the actors in the mood. This is why Carpenter rescored bits and pieces of The Thing, a lot of Morricone's contributions just didn't work.
