LoloYodel : I remixed this "Desolation Row" as the original copy had annoying audio distortion around the 6:00 mark and again around 6:25 ...
So, here on "my" remix, I overdubbed the audio with the best possible SBD version (smile)
This video : "Pro-Shot (in-house feed) ~ 1st or 2nd gen vhs ~"
(My LoloYodel sense is that it's certainly NOT 1st or 2nd generation ... but it's very good anyway).
This was the closing night of the very fine (exquisite) 3 night run at The Alpine Valley Music Theatre. It was essentially from the July 17th show which constituted ALMOST all of the great "Downhill From Here" video (3 songs actually come from this July 19th show : "West LA Fade", "Desolation Row" & "The Deal"). This July 19th is also a very sweet show and has a truly spectacular "Morning Dew" !

Thanks for uploading this video LoloYodel. This Dylan song performed by the Grateful Dead is the closest thing I have found in 44 years that describes who I have come to be (every single character in the song) and the way I feel or sound at any given moment. Things do come full circle eventually if you let them.

Start getting educated, it’s takes a long time, so many songs, so many different versions, era’s, up’s and down’s, I’ve been a serious dead head for 17 years and I still discover new jams and that’s why this band is pure Magic! 65-66/ 67-72 /73-79/80-83/84-89/90-95. My favorite years are 1970, 1974, 1977, 1980, and 1989. Even though the 90’s were very hit or miss with Jerry’s health/drug problems. But somehow one of the most majestic pieces of music ever played live period was from Jerry’s final show, before he checked out, on 7/9/95 is “So Many Roads” during the second set! Every time I hear it I want to cry and smile at the same time! Just be careful, they’ve been known to Steal Faces right off of people’s heads! But even with a stolen face there’s nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile!!! GDF FOR LIFE

Confession time. I was going to name my firstborn son, Robert Dylan Fischer Merena, after the two greatest geniuses of my time, Bob Dylan and Bobby Fischer. It didn't work out as I planned, but I still think Dylan was and is the greatest music writer of my age. My favorite Dylan song is Desolation Row. In my humble opinion, this version is the best I have ever heard. So what's the big confession? Sure, I heard of The Grateful Dead, but I never once listened to them until very recently. I can't say exactly why, but I didn't. Just another one of those things that you can only regret in retrospect. Those of you who were Dead Heads while I was living in ignorance are truly fortunate. Excuse me now, I have some catching up to do.

The Dead almost always had great shows at AV. I can't say I was a this particular show, but I did see them 3 times there, lawn seats with the masses with a large group of friends. They always had the sound dialed in, and Phil's thunderboomers would make your eardrums flap all the way to the back of the lawn. It's just a sin that Jerry liked the H too much, he would have been with us for a few more years if he hadn't, but at least he shared with us what he could while he was here.

Or not, it doesn't matter, Dylan himself would probably say the same; if you like it, you like it, you need not search for anything further. Dylan wrote this song in 1965. But in all the Dylan songs the Dead covered Jerry had so much room to noodle and pick. I think that's a lot of the sucess Hendrixs had with All Along The Watchtower.

You're right Timothy. Dead covered alot of Dylan. Dylan wrote songs that were structured for improvisation. Thats why when Jerry came back from a comma he played with them for short time.

Ok guys, check it out, ive listened to hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of Grateful Dead concerts, and though I've heard quite a few that are amazing, 7/19/1989 takes the prize for GREATEST FIRST SET CLOSING SEQUENCE EVER, Desolation Row > Deal, each song was played at the absolute peak that night, the Grateful Dead never brought either song back to that level of energy, fire, and beauty.

Thank you LoloYodel for fixing this and uploading! I have watched it at least 50 times now I think. I LOVE it! This version of Desolation Row is by far the best! Even better than Bob Dylan himself and I love Dylan. I really appreciate you fixing and preserving this amazing piece of history of Bobby, Jerry and the entire Grateful Dead.

OMGarcia,,So kind of you Loloyodel. It was harsh but i would sill have to play it dozens of time. I love how Jerry and Bob are "on the same page" here. Jerrys backing vocals on this are small parts, but masterfully done. It physically and mentally hurt to have to hear that corruption in the previous upload, buts its so damn great I always hoped someone could step in and fix it. Good stuff man, thanks !
