As a father going through child custody issues myself at the moment ib would say there are a lot of unknowns here. Certainly the father did things the wrong way, and lying about weapons in the vehicle didn't help him look innocent and even the child's reaction when she is asking if mum is going to the party probably indicates that she has a good relationship with the mother. But the unknown is who knows what the father knows that maybe even the law hasn't, and while it doesn't justify his actions if he honestly had concerns for the child's well being then I could understand how he feels. So I don't think we should be so quick to judge as we don't know why he was driven to go about things the wrong way. The police offers handled it well though. Whatever the unknown story is they had to do what they did. The way the dad went about it certainly did raise concerns about the child's safety.

@@benprice3586 I'm from Australia, so I am not coming from the perspective of the US Constitution (I assume it is US). While I am in full agreement that there are a lot of unknowns, given the circumstances I would think the unknowns to be better sorted out by a court. If the police officer lets the father go, then he might just turn around and take off with the child again. That would be a problem if the father is a danger. The lie about the gun is the biggest problem. Had the officer seen a gun in his boot then maybe the father just didn't know it was there, but he took the registration paper out from underneath the gun. Even if it is possible the father missed it even then, it would be difficult for anyone to believe. Then he would have noted the reaction of the child. She was obviously concerned about whether her mother was going to the party. If I picked my children up they wouldn't even question it, so to me the fact that the child is questioning indicates the father has had a previous history of picking her up without mum's permission and the child is concerned. It also probably indicates the child has a good relationship with the mother (although this wouldn't be 100%). Also the fact he was going about it the wrong way is a concern. So while I 100% agree about the unknown of the situation, even as a father who is somewhat concerned about his own children's current circumstances, I would find it difficult to criticize the policeman. There were enough clues to suggest there was possible danger to the child for me to believe that he acted in the best interest of the child, and the matter is better to be sorted out by the courts. Whether that is constitutional though, I don't know, and I am not in a position to disagree with you on that.
