Graphics were good for the time, responsive controls and gameplay, none of the cars were trash tier, and an amazing dark tone in both the levels and story. Plus Paint it Black was the theme song. Pretty amazing game all around.

It’s hard to argue with someone who says it’s one of the greatest car combat games of all time. Unless you really don’t like the dark themes, there is no “bad” part of this game

Hey Zombie Necrone, I actually have quite same reasons as you. But I want to tell something interesting: My big brother likes the gameplay but dislikes the graphics. He calls the game The Beaver's A$$ Game because he barely can see anything because the worlds are too dark. Well, it's a PS2 game, what did he expect?

Alot of the cars have enhancements built into their specials if u didnt know. If u hold Roadkills all the way to when it makes a quick beeping sound the missles do double damage and turn red.

I got to play this when i was a kid because my cousing randomly got it (we never knew how or from where) and we played it so much for so many hours non stop. Since we are from latin america we didnt understand any of the story so we skiped every cutscene but the gameplay was enough for us to spend countless nights playing it. We use to call it the el juego del payaso (the game with the clown). Now grown up and knowing english i fell once again in love with the franchise for its lore and characters.

I've come to love TMB's aesthetics. When I see the downtown district level I like to think what lies beyond the concrete walls barricading off the rest of the city. Or the city beyond the rooftops level. Gives me Half-Life 2 Beta vibes.
@Halagini

There's definitely a special mystique to the aesthetics of the HL2 leak and TM:B. They perfectly compliment a world that is full of extreme brutality and unlimited questions. While we saw a rise of uber grim artstyles in the mid 00s, the HL2 leak and TM:B from 1999-2001 were sort of preliminary to those works. It was unique, and arguably ahead of its time. They both have such an overwhelmingly oppressive, industrial atmosphere that has never been matched. We will never see anything like this again.

Let's not forget all the special...specials!!! Road Kill if you charged his special at the perfect time shot red super versions of the missles! Axel could become 1 giant rolling wheel. Crazy 8: If you double taped directions on the d pad and you shocked someone from that side, it would do more damage. Manslaughter could launch his bolders forward or back. Outlaw could shoot extra blue missles by pressing a button when opponents were within a certain range. Shadow could use an Outlaw style special popping from her roof with a gun to shoot. This games story was great. The game play was great. Yes, you could argue they went a bit to "dark," and the levels could have had better lighting. I game that deserves a remake!

just a few days back, I saw a shorts vid that introduced me to "No Face" (Crazy 8) and somehow he immediately became my favorite character. The same vid also introduced me to TM: Black and I loved all of the character's stories cuz of how dark and gritty they were compared to the rest of the games. Even tho I haven't played ANY of the games, this might be my favorite among them.

TM2 was my favorite of the franchise. I remember being so pumped when I saw TMB was coming out, after the disappointments that were 3 & 4. I bave to say, I was terrible at Black, and didn't come close to putting the hours in that I did on 2. It wasn't fun, just chaotic. Maybe I'll revisit it all these years later, and see what's up.

Honestly people love it so much because it was a view into a world where twisted metal could actually be what the name says, twisted. It was dark, and gritty from every point of view, even the music sounded like something from an early korn album. The cars were better than the first 4 games in the sense that they were more than playable but less than godlike. The stories were compelling and kept you wanting to know how the characters get their just rewards, whether good or bad, as well as the intertwined connection between them and the hidden lore underneath it all. The 2 aspects i couldnt get behind were some of the levels, i.e. the ice level, the interstate level, and drive in level. It had the open aspect but when u go from a level like the first one, to a level such as those, it kinda kills the excitement slowly. Also, the bosses didnt really seal the deal on the idea of "intimidating". Challenging? Yes. Intimidating? Not even. But twisted metal has always had bad bosses so its nothing new. Overall i loved this game since i saw its first appearance in a playstation magazine and have loved it ever since and it shall always be my 2nd favorite in the series

Paint it black by The Rolling Stones sounds like something that could be from an early Korn record Lmao 😂 nah I’m just playing but the rest of the music is a bit more ambient imo. If it sounded like Korn / nu metal I don’t think it would actually hold up as well as the soundtrack doesn’t sound all that dated / period locked

I remember I first got this game when I was like 9. I tried and could barely get past the menu because it was so scary back then. I remember being stuck on Junkyard for an hour on easy and quit on Suburbs because I couldn’t beat it. I didn’t come back to this game until it came on ps4 in 2016. It was then I could finally play the game. This comes from someone who mastered every other TM game by the age of 10. Sorry this is so long but having most levels the same 3 colors is bad for long term play. It honestly gets depressing and the game is also too fast to know what the hell is going on.

The ONLY thing I would change about the game is improving the a.i to fight each other more, and adding more drivers to huge maps. I know hunting down the player is a staple of twisted metal a.i, but maps like the suburbs could have been even better with big firefights happening all over the landscape. Still, this is one of the best games ever made imo.

I think my only 2 complaints for this game are: All the levels kinda feel samey. I obviously don't mean layout wise cuz they are all laid out differently but they all feel like they look the same. Aside from snowy road which maybe imo from looks alone is probably the nicest level. Its probably because the very similar color scheme on most of the levels just makes it hard for them to really set themselves apart from each other. And the problem of the early games (mainly 1 and 2) where the AI strictly target you and only is very prevalent here. Obviously if youre good enough at the game it doesn't matter too much but i would at least like to see the AI realize theres other enemies besides me. Something they did kinda fix later games which is nice. Everything else tho to me makes it still seem like its one of the better games if its not the best in the series. The physics. The choice of characters. The stories. Its all pretty good.

Regardless of what anyone says twisted metal black is canon to me. The other games were fun but it was the best in every way a coherent story, music, themes, controls. I played them all, incognito did the best job and the only reason the brand faded off was they didnt want another studios canon and we never got a true sequel to black. Edit: also i may be remembering incorrectly but black was the only one that the enemy drivers ran around on fire and you could run the over for a small health Regen

They hate it because it was a rushed game. 989 studios took over after the original team (single trac) was told they wouldn't be working on the next installment. They had about 8-10 months to work on it and get it out by Christmas. So some of the levels are a little more bland than they had hoped. Such as Washington DC, where you battle Darkside. It's a wide open cardboard box to fight inside of. I'm not going to say I hated it because it was actually the first one I ever played. But that's another thing, kids were playing it more than adults because it was almost silly. Like the wishes the contestants got for example, they weren't brutal or insane. They were just corny. I will say though, they did have some kickass art for the characters available. While it is a good game, I feel it could've been more its own thing. It didn't feel like the third twisted metal after 2, honestly the best cannon story continuation is Twisted Metal Head On. But with that being said, it was still a great game in and of itself. I just feel they missed the dark humor mark. As do others. But hey, if it's the game you love there's no shame in that at all. I love every Twisted metal, there's just some elements from the original ones that didn't make it to 3 and 4. Thus, Twisted Metal Black was born. Because when it got too bright and colorful David Jaffe said let there be darkness. And dark and twisted it was.

Great question! It’s a quality game, especially for the PS1. I think a lot of folks just don’t like the goofy style it had or the weird physics compared to TM2

It makes no sense, Mr Grimm is enough of a reason to like the game.

The tone and atmosphere of this game was definitely inspired by the movie Se7en.

This game looks so fun watching you play it but when I get on I get pissed and frustrated and log off immediately. The skyscraper level is no joke. .

IMO Twisted Metal(2012) has the best gameplay in the series.

I usually see most people play the game just firing their weapons into the air instead of at people. All the while they spam their machine gun while missing every single bullet. Then when they die to the AI they call the game impossible. Im happy to see someone who (even though they say are bad) relatively knows what they are doing and able to understand how to use the weapons given. Speedrunning this game I rarely notice any difficulty save for a few annoying quirks in the ai and how they move. Also SO happy to finally see someone kill warhawk without driving around in circles the 5 minutes instead of just sitting in the middle. Such a fun strat that everyone doesn't realize is good. Great review!

Thanks! I appreciate you saying that! 😄 Black is a little deceptive with it’s difficulty imo. It’s hard, but once you get a grasp on the basics and the speed of the game, it becomes much more manageable.

I really dislike Black's tone. Too dark visually, and lacking the campy comedy and over the top vibe... And then you have Sweet Tooth special... 1, 2 and Head-on have the perfect tone in my opinion.

Buttery smooth. It’s upscaled to 1080p and has trophy support. Besides that, it’s identical to the original PS2 version.

@@dessadoo Cool just recently found out it was on the ps store and after playing head on, on the PS2 I gave to my nephew I've been feeling the urge for my own vehicular mayhem, sure there's the 2012 one but I've been missing the old each vehicle has it's own character and ending thing.

I downloaded this game recently and honestly I don't think I would have liked it much if I played it as a kid. Now that I'm older I can say that I do appreciate what the game is going for and I have heard good things about it over the years. But I just find the opponents have too much damn health and it's too easy to die and thus it gets really repetitive. Maybe I just suck at the game but I don't know I still feel the 2012 one was the best.

I found this game too hard. AI would do massive damage while you would barley chip away at their health. There never seems to be enough weapons to fight them with. But I must just not be good at the game because people have beaten it. Twisted metal 2 is my favorite, but this game is good and fun, just too hard for me
