The main, key thing to Small Brawl is it's aesthetic. It does rc cars PERFECTLY and deciding to use rc cars for a car combat series proved their creativity to keep new entries fresh. Twisted Metal 1-3(+ Head-On) were just your average run of the mill vehicles of the world, 4 being futuristic, Small Brawl being childs play with their toys at the sandbox, Black being a world of insanity and hell unleashed, and 2012 for a post-apocalyptic world. Small Brawl being childlike was nowhere near a setback to itself; it was it's distinct identity as it continued a solid, working, enjoyable formula.

i love it concept, i feel is super creative and fun, i have always had a soft spot for stuff of a more "dark" nature in a setting thats a rip on kiddie stuff because I think one would need to have a good sense of cleverness and creative to make it fit properly, i would just change a bit calypso's design because i feel look way too standard school bully, maybe make him a pig tails girl as a wink to calypso's canon daughter

If this game was meant to get a younger generation interested in Twisted Metal, then I can say it certainly worked. I didn't own this game but I played it at a cousins house. This was my first introduction to the series and would later go on to get Head-On and Black. I honestly think this could have been made into a spin-off series.

I hear so little of this game I thought my memories of it were some sort of fever dream I had after playing Twisted Metal 1 and 2 as a kid. I immediately clicked this video and was happy to confirm I wasn't actually crazy, and this game did indeed exist. And if I remember right, it was awesome and the cutscenes were charming. The maps in this game were also so damn charming. Thanks for reviving a childhood memory!

Small brawl is number 1 in the spot for PS1 era twisted metal, for me. It feels more polished and more accurate than the rest. Plus PS2 doesn't arrived yet in my country back in 2001 lol

This was actually my very first TM game ever, even though I was in my mid teens at that point, and I ADORED this game so much. I really wish they'd start doing some HD remake/remasters of the series, but this game especially, as the setting of it makes it much easier for people to get into.

Just finished all the tournaments on hard difficulty on my twitch channel. I can attest to that it is fun but just be aware that the A.I. is notorious at ganging up on you when you least expect it. I hope someone in the community can get around to modding it well enough to revisit it with some of the characters like Crimson Fury, Spectre, Warthog and Thumper that might need some buffs with their specials at the very least.

As a twisted metal fan who owns each game in the series, i can definitely say that TM2, black, small brawl and Head On were my favs. Never could understand the review bombs for small brawl honestly. I personally put more time in small brawl trying to unlock trapper and piecemeal more than the other TM games lol and i still down have them😂

Honestly I think all the hate for this game was just regurgitated word of mouth from people who haven’t even played it. Even more so than Twisted Metal 3 and 4 since there are people who’ve played those and disliked them for the inferior gameplay (I think they’re decent games but only really fun in multiplayer imo)

This was my introduction to the Twisted Metal franchise. My 5-6 year old brain enjoyed this game very much, and I have replayed this well into my teens. This is my personal perception of what Twisted Metal is (and should be). I never really vibed with TM: Black, never finished TM 2, but I played the shit out of this and finally TM 2012. Small Brawl is definitely overhated and underrated. Great video.

Small brawl is the only TM that i HAD to collect for. I love the "small cars in a big world" feel. The combat is TM2 but with refillable lives.its super modern feeling

The best music in all of TM series. Its natural since tracks here are remix of already good music used in TM2. It also adopt the same controls as TMB which is by far the best controls too. Its bloody underated considering its TMB's cute younger bro. PS : Correct me as far as I know Outlaw here can steal life from enemies from its special attack by mashing the fire button like you do with Crazy8 but in all directions. I couldnt remember when the last time ive played this. Mandela effect is sure confusing. Great vid and narration as always!

I’m actually unsure about Outlaw in this game doing that. I wouldn’t be surprised as TM4 Meter Maid can steal health with her taser special and Crazy 8 can charge up his special. I can see Small Brawl just combining those traits. 😅

This game was awesome. Played it a ton growing up. The only twisted metal games i had as a kid was this one and the first one. I didnt play the others till a little bit later on.

My problem with small brawl is the gun play it is really hard to hit anything ive gotten packs of 3 homing missiles and missed every single one because the homing was so poor freeze missiles sometimes have so much homing they can turn like 180 degrees other times they dont home at all even if an opponent is directly in front of you. the problem i think is the missile travel time is too slow and the car acceleration from turbo is too fast so alot of things end up missing. I think everything about this game is amazing but the gunplay so if it was good at that it might have made my top 4 tm games. Also the levels and bosses especially drag on way too long on hard they have to much health weapon pickups are scarce and what you do shoot misses half the time. I just beat the game on hard with everyone last month so this is all fresh in my memory

Even two decades later I still consider it the best one for the ps1 since it plays the best, the soundtrack is not just fitting but also has good remixes of songs from the other games, the vehicle designs are decent, and still to this day some of the best level design for a toy car based game

I thought it was cute and interesting. There were some balance issues like with Darkside able to K.O. any low armoured car with one special. Just hit, brake, hit, brake over and over. I was able to get 4 hits in with just one special before. The graphics were ps1 so we cannot really compare to what we have now. But it was a huge improvement to what we got in 3 and 4, I will tell you that much. I think the reason for a lot of the disliking of this game was because Twisted Metal Black was released around the same time on the ps2. It was one of the most iconic games not only for Twisted Metal but car combat in general. So when comparing the two games, Small Brawl definitely falls flat. But as far as the ps1 goes, Small Brawl fell in the middle of the five games. Better than 3 and 4, but not as good as 2. Possibly tied with 1.

I played and appreciated Small Brawl just as much as the other games growing up, and it definitely deserves standing up next to the rest of them. I really like its creativity and the unique aspect it brought to the gaming table. Not my favorite, but Small Brawl certainly is solid, fun, and at least in my top 5 of TM games!

I got a hankering for twisted metal so I whipped out the ps1 with TM 2 & 4. Bit the bullet and got small brawl off of eBay. Physics are way way way way way better than 3 & 4 and looks better than 1 & 2. I agree with you. SB was/is the zenith of twisted metal on PS1 5:40

This game seems like it would be considered as one of the best in the series if it weren't for its placement on the ps1. And thus being on the ps1 brings my only real complaint with the game in that it looks visually not great at all. Game plays great and it's an interesting concept for TM. I cant help but think the hardware is truly what holds the game back. If it had a higher frame rate and the art had that extra power from the ps2, this game could easily go head to head with the likes of black or TM2 "You miss 100% of your shots regardless of whether you take them or not so why bother?" Truly inspiring stuff lol

Talking to Dave Goodrich, the lead designer of Small Brawl, he actually let me know that the original plan for Small Brawl was to develop it for PS2, but early on they were to told to downgrade it to PS1 to not eat into Twisted Metal: Black’s sales

Always have been a fan of Twisted Metal, and found Twisted Metal Small Brawl a decent game. I of course loved Black far more, but overall i found Small Brawl a fun and clever diversion. Some of the maps were pretty cool, and the RC car battleground was a novel idea. My order of best in the franchise goes 1. TM Black. ❤ 2. TM 2. 🤩 3. TM 2012. 😄 4. TM Head On. 🙂 5. TM 1. 🙃 6.
