What people fail to realise is Pattaya is essentially at sea level. It doesn't matter if you bury 4 meter diameter pipes. The water can only flow into the gulf so fast.

Its a pity they don't try to capture and store the water that runs off the East side hills, down Khao Talo and Khao Noi etc. There would be no water shortages if this run off could be stored instead of letting it wash away millions of bahts worth of beach sand every year

No. The voters have Move Forward MPs 38% of the primary vote but not the 50% you need to form a government.

Just completed my yearly retirement visa extension, process took an hour, cost 1,900 THB. Cheaper and easier for some instead of DTV.

Horses for courses. With the DTV you can ‘work’. But the O visa remains a very cheap option for punters that want to live here long term.

@peterward9755 @timnewtontoday 5,700 THB is a little cheaper than10,000 THB + Embassy charges + airfares + accommodation etc..BTW I've lived on Thailand for 20 years, O-visa certainly has advantages. So why would I fly, especially to UK? Cheers.

I’m no engineer but a 2 meter diameter pipe doesn’t seem to be large enough to handle the volume of water when the downpours hit. And I hope the engineer in charge is qualified to handle this project. ( Many hired project “supervisors” in Pattaya are not ( my observation after 16 years living there before I moved).

Not sure anyone here is qualified, they might look the part and wear a uniform, but the proof is in the pudding and it often ends up burnt. I live in Chiang Mai where the floods here were very bad this year and some of the flooding was caused by exactly what you have mentioned, along with drainage fitted incorrectly or blocked or no drainage in the area, and I used to work as a building engineer in the UK. From what I can see so far nothing has been done to change these issues and some are worse than before the floods happened. When the most serious floods happened here there was no rain for 4 days before but heavy further up north. So how did it happen? It was a mess.

DTV, we wont know if its a success until they have to renew the visa, at the moment it hasn't been going 6 months and at 6 months thats the first renewal so we wait and see.

The ease of the DTV made me change from the Philippines and Cambodia. It was much easier than the PI SRRV and has more length than the Cambodia visa. The was a great move for Thailand.

Whether I ‘like it or not’ is irrelevant. The legality of smoking cannabis, and where, IS very opaque, if you care to read the available text. It will become less opaque in the next few months. In the meantime those ‘exporters’ will be biding their time in the immigration detention centre.

What happens in Pattaya is a contractor is hired to install drainage pipes which they do over the course of a year or two. Then when the rains come they find out the pipe isn't big enough so they go back to the official who hired them and say we can install bigger pipes and the official says ok Nephew here is some more money , and over the course of a year or two they install slightly bigger pipes . Repeat . By the way it is my understanding Nephew is a very common nick name for Thai's particular in the road construction industry .

Same thing with Samui regarding infrastructure. So much construction going on striping the land of its vegetation. If there's a good rain, there will be landslides. Also, the island is choking with trash. Really sad.

Brandishing a weapon is illegal in most countries. However, a BB Gun is not a weapon. Why is it that people don't handle their own quarrels without bringing in police (who typically interfere rather than resolve)

You are wrong, if you did that in Australia or NZ you would be arrested as well. BB guns are considered in the same way as Thailand, and pointing them at someone is very serious.

Calibre, muzzle velocity, pressure, storage etc may limit the legality of of BB and airguns. Presuming they are legal everywhere by default is at best silly.

Thank you - we also have bio luminescence here in on our beaches in Oregon. I remember seeing it as a child and thought it was magic like I had seen in Disneyland. And I now enjoy watching our Grandchildren's excitement when they see this magical display when we walk the dark beaches home from the Tha Sala/NST seafood restaurants. :) I can hardly wait for December!!! Thank you Tim for sharing this mixture of stories. BTW - we have such wonderful memories of our Phuket Boat Trip and then through the caves to the hidden lagoon. And the gorgeous night trip where we let our pretty "candle floats" drift off.
