I’ve considered only allowing the use of the full destiny pool once per encounter. So once a token is flipped, it’s set aside for the rest of the encounter. I think it will limit the constant back-and-forth flipping and can also create a sense of enthusiasm or even foreboding among the players heading into an encounter - depending on the state of the pool.

Nice series so far. There is an easy way to encourage players to spend their light points if they are hording them. Simply start increasing the difficulties of their rolls or adding setbacks. You can back down again once the force becomes balanced. If you do it subtly, they wont even notice.

Important note on the limits of destiny if "counter flipping" is an issue in your game: When upgrading skill checks, the player making the check has the chance to upgrade first and then the opposing party has the chance to react; if the active player passes and the opposition upgrades, the active player can't go back and upgrade. This can be a little awkward at the table because you don't want the opposition to be constantly asking, "Will you be upgrading?" before each check they plan to upgrade. I try to alleviate this by saying something like, "I'm upgrading regardless of if you upgrade" or "if you're good then I'll upgrade" or simply counting out a reasonable amount of time, "1...2...2.6" to prompt a decision if the player is being indecisive. If you're the active player, try to wait a beat before throwing the dice as the opposition has to have their chance to upgrade before the dice hit the table. I have seen too many posts disparaging the mechanic but as soon as the poster is made aware of this limitation the counter flipping complaint goes away.

The only minor rule comes about when all the destiny points end up the one colour. For example. There are 5 Destinity Points in the pool, and in the previous round, the PCs flipped their last point and all the points are now darkside. In the next NPC turn, the GM flips a Destiny Point turning it to lightside. Technically, that point is in limbo, and can't be used by the players until the following turn. Its an unecessary complication IMHO but its the way the rules are stated.

I haven't played the game myself but I thought about a houserule to prevent destiny point hoarding. If they all are on one side and a roll starts that side gets some bigger bonus and flips multiple of the tokens back over just to introduce that ebb and flow back in. I call it the crashing wave rule.

I’ve heard about the Star Wars TTRPG and honestly these destiny tokens are so interesting so much more interesting than inspiration in 5E and makes sense. The force always needs to be balanced with light and dark, players getting able to get by using the light side of the force like they do in the movies/books/games and then the GM being the author or director of those films/books/games setting them back

Good job with this series. Keep it up. Regarding Destiny Point pool. You made mention that a Destiny Points pool is only 5 points in size. I have heard tjis on several other pod casts as well. But I can not find where in the rules it sets this cap. In fact it says on pg 27 of SW EOTE rules "Each player with a PC rolls one Force Dice. The tally rolled becomes the Destiny pool." I can not find where it sets the cap at 5 Destiny Points. I regularly have groups of 8+ players but have had a group as small as 2. Following the rule on pg 27, if every player rolled two pips on the Force Dice, I would end up with either 4 at the low end and 16 at the high end. Ive asked at fourms but no word back yet. So maybe you can help
@TheTabletopEmpire10 ай бұрын
I said you roll the force dir to determine the pool. I only used 5 as an example. So every player rolls the force die. Each white circle adds a light destiny point, and each black circle adds a dark destiny point.

Love your videos! But, whenever you cut away to a “dice throwing” scene or an explanation of dice symbol scene and you are showing the dice or the Destiny Points against a BLACK backdrop, it is REALLY hard to make out the darker PURPLE dice, the BLACK dice and the dark side counter side of Destiny Point. Maybe use a lighter surface [wooden table top, perhaps] or neutral, lighter color as the backdrop. Anyway, aside from this, you are doing a GREAT JOB! May the Force Be With You!

Does deus ex machina work when a GM uses it? I feel that GMs have that ability without the use of Destiny points. As a GM I only flip destiny to upgrade difficulties for the players.

Can a player downgrade a difficulty using a Destiny Points
@TheTabletopEmpire2 жыл бұрын
I don't remember seeing it in the book, however the great thing is GMs can really get funky with them and allow for cool mechanics and ways to shape the story. So if you are the GM, I would say go for it! If you are a Player, then ask the GM if he is cool with it. Hope this helps!

I had a crazy idea watching this and thinking about how my players always forget about destiny. At the end of the session the groups gains XP equal to the amount of Destiny they spent collectively. It's something I'm going to try out because it will incentivize and remind the players to use destiny, because everyone wants XP. It might give them way too much XP, but there are worse things that can happen in a game. I'm going to try it out, and see how it goes!
@TheTabletopEmpire Жыл бұрын

I as the GM do not need to spend destiny points to cause events to happen. I spend them so that the players can ultimately spend them.

Well, yeah, if you want to be pedantic about it 😂
@robertperry8698 Жыл бұрын
One issue with your statement is that there will only be 5 destiny points ever. This is actually false, and if it's in the rulebook, that way, it's been retconed to be otherwise. Since every player gets to roll a force dice, the possibility of every player rolling double dots increased this count exponentially. For large groups, say 6 players or more, this can potentially mean 12 destiny points. As a GM, you could reduce this to one per player and not have them roll and just place one destiny point per player. Otherwisethe arbitrary roll only indicates the number of light or dark side points, not how many points there are. Of course, as GM, you can determine your own guidelines regarding destiny points. And if you want to keep them at 5, then I guess thats fine.
@TheTabletopEmpire Жыл бұрын
In context, i said if you only roll 5 force points then there are only 5 destiny points for the remainder of the session. Then next session you roll again.

4:10 is why we don’t use destiny points in our games that’s not how stories work if a conflict arises you don’t get just “no it doesn’t” what’s the point of playing (my players agree with this and think destiny points are dumb)
@TheTabletopEmpire8 ай бұрын
They can be amazing, but yeah more often than not they can be lackluster. We use them in my games, but they are not super prominent. Really their usefulness is reliant on the table’s creativity with them.
