“People’s lives got better under communist regimes” most insane thing I’ve heard in a long time.
@savagepeace3 жыл бұрын
It's a pretty hard thing to consider. It's inarguable that under some socialist governments there were large improvements in certain areas. Some of these will be due to external factors, such as industrialisation, but the specific planning under that government will have to be factored in. Yet on the other hand there were a great many areas and people who suffered hugely under socialist governments. This is all obviously different based on which government we're talking about in particular, but if that's the most 'insane thing' you've heard in a while then please don't go to Twitter.

I agree, but for some reason every time people cite history for their politics it's usually nuclear cringe.
@PajamaJazama3 жыл бұрын
@@zacharychristy8928 Because people don't bother to get even a basic grasp of history unfortunately. At least Destiny has the decency to admit that he doesn't study history much, as opposed to say, Vaush. The sad thing is that it really doesn't take much time investment to get a decent overall understanding of history, at least for the purposes of arguing politics.
@zacharychristy89283 жыл бұрын
@@PajamaJazama yeah, I totally agree. I think most people approach "learning" with the mentality that they're just looking for more evidence that confirms their bias. That's how you wind up with takes like "socialist revolutions always lead to improved quality of life" or "Nazis were actually leftists".
@PajamaJazama3 жыл бұрын
@@zacharychristy8928 Yeah, historical study & complexity doesn't get a fraction of the respect it deserves nowadays. Sociologist types especially, are so presumptuous to make broad authoritative claims about it, as though sociology qualifies them as historians. The same types will get indignant if anyone does the same with sociology. I really cringed in that Vaush & Destiny 2v2 debate, because right out of the gate both sides were making really silly arguments based on history. Rhetorical ability aside, factually I feel like I could've argued either side of that debate successfully, and I just have a passing interest in history. It really is a huge weakness, because misconstrued history is a massive part of what turns people to the alt-right etc.

Considering that it's used as a "Socialism is when no house" defense for socialists hoarding their money and never doing anything other than being cut throat capitalists I'd say it's pretty easy to refute. You can participate in a system and be the change. Look at Hasan. He "wants to improve society somewhat" and yet never does anything despite having the power to do so.
@SomersBugtopia3 жыл бұрын
That meme is brain dead I'm sorry, some people don't just participate they thrive by being the thing they say they oppose. By the logic of that meme Jeff Bezos could be a socialist who's just participating in the system.
@verbatim75083 жыл бұрын
@@SomersBugtopia I agree that Hasan's leftism is inefficacious at best and fake/performative at worst, but that's a problem with Hasan, not a problem with the fundamental argument that it's stupid as fuck to criticize leftists who _aren't_ rich for """"participating"""" in a capitalist society, as if they have a real choice in the matter. I agree that it's cringe when rich leftists fail to donate a portion of their wealth to the causes they claim to believe in, but not every leftist who posts memes like that is Hasan, quite obviously.
