So as someone who's actually attended meetings at a local reserve about this specific topic heres some notes I'd like to share: GPR does not find bodies, it finds anomalies and needs further (manual) analysis to determine whether these anomalies are graves and we'll never know an exact number until we can actually have digs funded. There is no practical way to search for underwater/swampy grave sites, and seeing as many residential schools are located in swampy/wet regions this is a difficult task. Yes the social media numbers tend to mix up the number of potential gravesites with confirmed bodies but thats social media, no subtly ever makes it through social media. The fact we don't even know how many bodies is a reason in itself to continue the search Funding for this is complicated What does this mean in my opinion? Well there is a considerable amount of potential gravesites but these are deaths due to mostly negligence (tb and lack of healthcare/oversight) of the government at large so I think its important to at least properly identify gravesites. I don't think any (reasonable) person is really refusing to believe that residential schools happened and kids died at an excessive rate, people are just arguing about solutions. To put it simply if my brother or my father were just taken away one day and never returned, I'd want to know what happened too and I think its completely reasonable to grant that dignity at the very least. It's also important to remember that death wasn't the only negative outcome from residential schools despite getting the spotlight, there were also children who were just adopted out instead of being returned home and the such, as well as of course the abuse you get when you hand complete power over hundreds of children to a number of adults who don't care about them and dont have the best oversight. This is to say that even if the vast majority of the graves were false positives theres still things that are important to address.

The missing children in residential schools has been known about for years nationally (and more on local levels), it just hit the mainstream because of the discovery out west recently. I hate how people always get distracted from the main point over terminology "should it be or shouldnt it be called this or that" or trying to assign blame around. Sure you can do that but he goal shouldnt be retribution, it should be a restorative endeavor... and what matters first and foremost is helping communities recover instead of trying to find someone to punish
