When this song first dropped in 2001, I was 10 years old and obsessed with it. Destiny's Child was like our 90s Supremes. I loved how Beyoncé used criticism to create an anthem to celebrate beautiful, full-figured women. The cognitive dissonance! Of course Kelly, Michelle, LaTavia, and Farrah had/have issues with Beyoncé. Yes, her Dad clearly favoured and prioritised his daughter but it was at the expense of the careers of ALL of the other members, whether they were in the band or their solo careers. Show business is exactly that, with a heavy dose of smoke and mirrors, PR, and saying the ‘right’ thing because one knows what side their bread is buttered on. If none of the other ladies didn’t take umbrage with the way Beyoncé was elevated and primed to be in the spotlight as part of the group and then her massive success as a solo artist, they wouldn’t be human.
