Because many international listeners repeatedly requested the meaning of this song, even if many Ethiopians tried to explain. I still notice a further request for the details. Being an Ethiopian, I wanted to contribute my share. The song is about, Menelik, an Ethiopian King in 1890s,(well in to 1900s as well), his wife TAITU, who also war leader, and Italo-Ethiopian war held in ADWA. Adwa is a place in the northern part of Ethiopia. By that time ITALY invaded ETHIOPIA (1896) to make it, its colony. At the moment, MENILIK, make a call to all Ethiopians to join him in the war. He also warned those who decline, by swearing by the name of Saint Mary. (? A possible punishment for not standing for one’s country). Finally, Ethiopia successfully defeated the aggressors to remain an uncolonized country. The song starts by mentioning some Generals of the King, eg BALCHA, how they bravely acted in the war. It says the people acted like angry bees in a hive, who attacked their enemy. The song tries to explain how Meniik bravely executed and led the war. The main event where people jump and shout loud is when he says, ‘ we must respond to Menilik’s call because he is seriously calling us, even by swearing by the name of Saint Mary. How could we fail him? How could we decline? That is impossible. It also further says, hadn’t I(We) responded, to this call, I(We) wouldn’t have been the free man/people of today. Our country wouldn't have been a free country like today. Menelik, Black MAN

In this song he is also admiring the Generals who lead the war. In the old times the Generals of Ethiopia are called Ras.
