Hey kids! Its you good buddy Uncle Ben here back again with a brand new installment of Weekend Wankshop!!!
One of the questions i get asked the most is "what kind of shampoo and conditioner do you use?"... but one of the SECOND most-asked questions i get is "how can i eliminate tension, build speed, and get my doggone hands in sync with each other?!?!!"
Now, that is TECHNICALLY 3 questions, but there is one answer: SPEED BURSTS!
Practicing licks and exercises with bursts of speed rather than straight up 16ths or sextuplets is the BEST way to identify problem areas in your playing; by constantly switching from medium to high speeds, like this lick does, you can easily figure out if you're adding tension in either of your arm hands when you kick it into high gear, isolate those problem areas, and eliminate them!
This lick is in the key of E minor and could be used as a great practice exercise or some nice soloing ideas. Practice it on ALL string sets (yes, even the G and B) and alternate pick everything! A winner is you!
Thanks so much for watching, let me know what you want to see next in the comments!

My fast playing has always been so inconsistent. I spend hours practicing fast licks and then the next day I can’t play it at half the speed I worked up to, but then next week I can play 20 bpm faster with no effort. I spent five minutes practicing this and already the knowledge and understanding of tension this video gave me has seemed to make me immensely more consistent and I can’t wait to see how I improve as I add this to my daily routine

I like how Ben uploads Thursday nights and expects us not to notice it's not quite the weekend. Haha. Sneaky. Great lesson though. Tension has always been my problem, not even shredding, just tension. I can play fast as shit and across the strings but I feel the burn after a while.
@swanclipper
@swanclipper 5 жыл бұрын
speed should never be the goal. consistency first, speed last. hitting every note is much more important than hitting all notes all the time, as fast as possible. that burn may be due to your posture too. don't press too hard on the strings with your fretting hand. you can cause damage to your Ulnar nerve as i learned a few months ago to my dismay. catching it early saved my hand and my arm. if you're pressing too hard, try getting lower gauge strings or if you can't do that, do everything you can to lower the action and keep tonality. ontop of that, fretting posture is most important. use all your fingers no matter how difficult it seems for your little finger, i promise it will catch up much faster than you think. it's easier to train that one finger. after nearly a year of constant little finger usage, it's almost comfortable to rest just above the strings instead of being curled up like a dead dog. also also. have an exercise prepared and do that for 10 minutes at least before you begin playing your session. more often than not, a scale will do. just mix up the order, probably on the fly, and just wait for 10 minutes to pass while you do that. also also also, don't care about tuning. fingering is what matters here. more often than not i watch/listen to something while doing these exercises. i don't think about them, i just let my hand do its thing. sure i know when i hit a bum fret, so i stop, stretch, refresh and go again. speed matters not. once you're warmed up, speed will find you. tension is brought on by not warming up and not being sure of what you're about to do. the rest of the variables i mentioned should be addressed when you pin point that as an issue.

@@swanclipper Hey! Great advice man. My tension actually comes from my picking. Like I said I can play fast and I can do it cleanly 99% of the time. Now that I think about it I never had any problems with fretting. Picking however is a pain in the ass. My tension comes from my arm, which doesn't make any to me because I am 100% sure I am not picking from the elbow and I don't grip the pick really hard. But I just realized that posture might be the problem. I'll try that.

Great advice, as always. Thanks! Perfect timing, too. I've been working on a fast (for me) arpeggio lick in a Dream Theater solo (Along for the Ride is the song) that starts with picked notes and then finishes with a sweep that then connects into the next passage. I have been battling the tension I noticed as this section comes up, slowing it down and really focusing on using as little pressure as possible and getting good clean notes and staying as relaxed as I would be on easy stuff. I still have a ways to go to get it up to speed, but I'm happy with the progress.

Uncle Ben, both my arm hands have had tension in them since day one. I think that's the issue for me. I established poor habits early on. Only starting from scratch with a metro-gnome and gradually increasing my speed rhythmically will I learn to relax said arm hands. With this method, I believe I would just tense up in anticipation of the speed bursts, and relax again for the slower bits. I think maybe there's no substitute for walking before running. But, I still love you...in a purely platonic way of course.

This reminds me of the intro riff to "Kill The King" by Megadeth. It's just chugging on the open low E string, but it's the syncopation between 8th and 16th notes that makes it really interesting. I would imagine that, with a little bit of creativity, you could take that riff and expand it out across the fretboard to give your fingers quite a workout.

He has a video where he talks about relaxation techniques. Next time you play, don't focus on playing so much. Focus on your body while you are playing. Make it a conscious effort to feel whats tight. Work from your toes and move up to your hair. Pay attention to what is noticeably tense and relax it. Spend some time listening to your body. Once you notice what is not relaxing and force yourself to let that tension go everything falls in line.

Good speed drill. Thanks. Oh my god ...that's so funny 9:35 you mentioned holding your breath...years ago when I watched Jimmy Page playing live in the Song Remains the Same movie I saw him hold his breath before tearing off these riffs and I was like; what? I couldn't believe it! I hope I didn't ruin your advice to your veiwers because you are SO right about this, I've noticed it in my own playing and I remember as a kid having to over come that impulse. Really. It's very important. Also, I like the shift between sextuplets and sixteenth in this drill. Really good. I'm jealous, wish I'd thought of it myself...really...why didn't I think of this before? Yeah, and the ultimate relaxed pick attack guy is EVH...his moves are so effortless. Thanks.

this is a really good exercise because it mimics/echoes the more interesting kind of stuff you'd want to play in 'real life' (whatever that means). how many songs/solos actually have a constant stream of notes of the same duration? only shitty ones! it's also good for getting different rhythmic patterns down, i.e. with a constant pulse you can involve notes in groups of 3, 4, 6 and even the more odd ones like 5 and 7 (for me i seem to naturally play things in 9s, but that's another story...9/8 is an awesome time signature, especially if you like irish music. spatter the dew is a good place to start - digression over)

What I find difficult to overcome,, is not tension from rote , scalar playing , but the awful tension going into and coming out of a lot of others thing before or after the scalar parts of a solo,... things like a half or whole step bend with vibrato and going into and coming out of arpegiatted notes , back into the 'one note after the other' linear scale playing like in this video...those two things and a couple of others are where my tension ...including both hands tensing up and even like you say holding my breath, comes in big time....part of the problem , at least for bends and or vibrato, is the extra amount of muscle that it takes to execute the bend or bend with vibrato versus how much less it takes to execute scalar playing although part of the problem could be from not having the lowest of action and not using a high amount of gain maybe.

Mr Ben Mr Ben! Hey dude, please listen. This is amazing advice. As silly and trivial as one would think, it is amazingly simple to tense up, especially in the picking arm and hand! This video has made me realize that. It's simply human nature to clench or tighten things when a fast action is necessary. When I focus on relaxing throughout all speeds of picking then my accuracy tremendously improves. And here is what I have come to realize that is related to this --- my ascending practices are always so much more labored than by descending and I never had an answer for it, other than, just keep practicing! Well, because of this video, here is the deal: My arm position, when starting ascending practices (aka low E string), automatically wants me to tense up, where my arm position when beginning descending practices (aka high E string) is much more relaxed!!! And then to top it off, because my arm is stiff right from the get-go on the ascending then it remains stiff throughout the practice scale! This video really made me see the light, my practices yesterday and today have been quite good and it's completely because of the thoughts you have put in my head regarding tension. Thank you Mr Ben Eller, thank you very much sir!

Thanks, Uncle Ben! Great trick, using the bursts to build up speed and... liquidate tension (har har har!) My bane are runs which are all sextuplets, then suddenly a wild quintuplet appears for a beat and then it's all sextuplets again... all quintuplets I can handle (e.g. Erotomania... not at JP speeds, but working on it). But all 6, suddenly a 5, then all 6... disaster. Do you think there could be a video about that sometime?

Combining triplets and 16ths really help. It's developing a groove overall i.e. practicing with a metronome is really magical. A lot of players will want to play fast with no guidance, and a lot of the tension is caused by uncertainty of (1) what to play, (2) how to play it, (3) at what speed, (4) how it will sound. I'm guilty of this lack of discipline

The lick reminds me of the Plug in baby riff by Muse. Good work uncle Ben. Thanks!

Hey Ben I've got a problem with my pick hand causing unwanted strings ringing like it's waking the strings when I'm going down a scale on the neck very frustrating my pick hand isn't a closed fist like yours I have mine open would having a closed fist pick hand mute the lower string better? Thanks

Pinky police? I'd have to use my pinky. Small non guitar player hands. Everything is so much more difficult. People with larger hands don't seem to realise how much more of a struggle it is when you can't even stretch two full tones.

I’m trying to change my picking to your “closed fingers” grip, and I am noticing when I get to the low E I have nowhere to anchor my palm. I’m trying 8th note triplets at 50 bpm and I can’t figure out a way to anchor my hand unless it’s way behind to bridge which hinders me from muting the E when I move to the A. Is there a video you can point me to?

Don't anchor at one spot. Move ur pick hand up and down along the bridge as required for picking whichever string u need, ur arm should barely rest (still resting)on the body of the guitar.

This sounds like a great exercise for those of us really unfamiliar with the realm past the 12th fret. Awesome 👍🎸

Ben, I'm still having trouble with the shredding part of my playing. I have no issues hardly at all with power chords, or simple chords. But I'm not giving up whatsoever,because I didn't think that I would EVER get to where I'm at now. And I owe almost all my learning to you my friend! Thank You very much for uploading these videos, and as soon as I'm able I'm going to give back and become a patreon. Again thanks!

MetallicA AlabamA Completely mute the fretboard with your fret board hand so you can not hear any notes. While muting the strings with fretboard hand, just focus on the picking with your picking hand. You will quickly see why you are having trouble! Go slow and work up to the picking pattern until you can play that perfectly, then play with both hands! To many times we focus on the fingering and not the picking! You can apply this to any aspect of guitar playing including strum patterns, figer picking etc. John 😁

@@johnhunter3011 I will definetlty do this, and I want to tell you that I appreciate the information. I've always wanted to play the guitar, and play it well. This is not only for myself, but to show my kids that their dad is more than just a dad, and a home repair guy lol. Like in my comment before,playing power chords comes rather easy, but trying to speed pick, sweeping, and just flat out trying to shred is like kryptonite to me. Believe me I try every day, and yes sometimes I want to go fast at first, and I know that I need to start off slow and easy. Mabe I'm just extremely anxious to be able to shred lol. Sorry the response is so long, I really do appreciate the advice. Thank You!

It takes many hours and years! Any one givin song or riff you must get to a point where it becomes totally subconscious. Almost like you are listining to someone else playing it!...it just happens!
