DESTROYING a DRAWING with 100 hours of WORK in it! || Hyperrealistic Portrait Drawing

I started a Hyperrealism portrait drawing a while ago and recently I decided to continue working on it after a year and a half break only to accidentally destroy it, the drawing had about 100 hours of work in it I believe. The pencils I used are Faber Castell polychromos on Stonehenge paper 250 gsm.

a lot of artists use burnishing.. just because one tiny area is flattened out doesn’t mean the whole drawing is ruined. You put so much effort into it, you should continue!

I vote for ignoring it and continue. Because the area isn't massive, and not every bit has to be printer perfect aswell. It's still beyond impressive for me. That's just my opinion though. You do what feels right for you ofcourse :)

As a fellow artist, I agree with Kermit, this isn't ruined forever. It may be lit in a certain way on the left side of his face in the reference photo but the drawing doesn't need to have that exact type of lighting, it's still realistic for lighting to look like that as long as that section can blend well with the rest, which is totally possible. Try not to treat it like an exact photocopy but a slightly alternative to the original that still portrays an extremely realistic depiction of the subject.

To anyone who can create art this well. I can imagine the amount of obsession there can be over 1 single mistake. Worse than OCD type obsession. I used to draw alot of comic book style art and threw away so many drawings because to me it wasn't flawless. I hate that this guy feels this. Easily some of the best artwork ive ever seen, but i love his light hearted nature and optimistic outlook to just challenge himself to do it over again. I would easily rage and tear the picture up and break all my pencils in very psychotic fashion.

You should try a “textured workable fixative” where the whole purpose is to add tooth back to a drawing where the paper is oversaturated, brush and pencil sell one that dries quickly and is made specifically for colored pencil drawings.

As Bob Ross would say: We don't makes mistakes, we have happy accidents. You improve through the mistakes, but golly you beat yourself up somewhat when you can do what even most artists can't. I would continue, One pen drawing I did not only has a ruined nose by drawing it to dark in profile, I kept it, framed it and put it in my work space to remind me that as a teacher of art to college students, I had to start from a point and continue learning over the years. Important for students to remember so that their errors don't beat them into artistic submission but inspires them to refine their process. Monet as a master destroyed many canvases, what a shame, it could have taught us how he developed. Crop it if necessary, down to a intimate drawing of an eye. That part alone in your drawing is masterful and worthy of saving from the art scrap heap.

Hi NeeYellow. Of course, it is IMPORTANT that you yourself are satisfied with your drawing.! But compared to what other, even very well-known, portrait painters have to be content with being able to do, your drawings are FANTASTIC well-liked !! The small "differences" you mention, between the photo of Morgan Freeman vs. your drawing, I'm sure most others won't even notice !! The areas you've already colored in the image are done in such a fantastically similar way, so I'm pretty sure this is what your audience notices.👍😊

People are saying it's still lot better than what other artist do, but a true artist never compares his artwork with others he compares it with his last art work, the current art should be way better than what was done last time. I can say this because I don't like my sketches too...though they are getting better but I expect my sketches to have zero error i.e. picture perfect resemblence with the reference pic. I understand the pain of neeyellow😅. But now he should continue as most of us are waiting for end result.

Hi! I have a couple of ideas... maybe you could add solvent like gamsol to help blend it more. Or maybe you could airbrush over it. Or maybe you could spray fixative or some kind of coating over it and then draw on top of the coating? Maybe the coating will have enough texture to hold new pencil? I am very curious what you will do. To me... it looks perfect and fantastic as it is. Please don't throw away this drawing. Keep drawing and finish this artwork as it will be loved. It is such a treasure! You are an art inspiration to me!

What I do is try to fix the mistakes and then after that, I check my drawing, and when I think it get worse, I just pick up a new sheet of paper and start over again. It's just my opinion, I know that you have your own standard. Keep it up, you're the best, better than Heather Rooney. I know what you mean about forgetting your tricks and processes that you learn for a specific drawing. And that these things can be forgotten over time. So in a situation such as this, what I would do is to not start working into the drawing itself right off the bat. Rather, I would grab my pencils, take out a new sheet of paper and test myself on that. Re-familiarise myself with my techniques. Draw a part and see if I can match what I had done previously. Think of it as a warm up exercise. But done so safely, on sheet of paper that doesn't have a 100 of hours of effort poured into it. I hope you can find the motivation to get back into it.

One thing I always remember from art school is this: "The artist is in the business of Creating. If you are an artist, simply create something else." That does not mean doing a new subject, it simply means start again. The process of creation is in the art of learning. By starting again, I guarantee it will be even that much better. It is one reason why my art professor made me do pen and ink so much. He knew I would mess up time and again. It was a valuable lesson learned.

I have a suggestion which I’ve used a few times with pen and ink but not sure it will work here, you could cut a piece a Bristol paper in the shape of the mistake and hide the edge in the break line in the shadow from dark to light and under the hair line. Because this is hyper realistic it will be hard to hide the break between papers, I’m not sure. Another method would be to key up or make rough the area that’s incorrect so it can be bound to with some kind of priming agent and use a liquid paper over the top, then use a piece of the Bristol paper to imprint the paper texture while it’s still drying so it will match.

I feel as though you can apply a tooth over the top of the colored pencil using white out and then colored pencil onto the white out. Or maybe cheat and use acrylic stippling over the colored pencil in the area you want to fix which doesn't require tooth. Consider that you are looking to get powder to stick over flattened powder... I wonder if hair spraying over what you have would create a binder that would collect powder from the pencils again... This can't be impossible to solve! There MUST be a way!

Have you tried adding some clear Art Spectrum pastel primer? I have used it over areas including watercolor and it has helped me. I also put a layer of clear gesso on my hp paper to add a bit more tooth when I do colored pencil. Don’t tell anyone though. Also a Tombow mono eraser that looks like a click pen but with a tiny eraser can take some color away as well as clear packing tape dabbed on that spot can lift color. Ok that’s all the tricks I know.

Awww it doesn’t look bad in the video at all. Personally, I’d have a crack at the other ear or different part of the picture to have a little practice before starting again. Especially if I’m feeling rusty. X
