I callously destroy my gerbils' home and leave them frightened and exposed. Actually, I'm just cleaning out their cage, but the process does involve a bit of upheaval for the little guys. Hopefully, they'll enjoy their fresh, clean enclosure when I'm done.

Hi! Some tips I've read about for helping move the gerbils out of their enclosure when they are not hand tamed or are not very comfortable being handled is to use a box or a glass container. Using a third of their old bedding with fresh, clean one is recommended to keep their scent in the enclosure, so it still "smells like home" and they aren't so stressed out by the change. Also, I would suggest using more bedding, around 12 in (30 cm) depth, so they can create somewhat of a burrow system, they are gonna love it!

Aww! Lil beans! Just a reference for next cleaning; gerbils recognise each other primarily through scent and matching it to their territory. If you remove all the bedding, the whole environment becomes scary and unfamiliar and can cause them to fight. Always keep 20% of the old bedding to put as the top layer. And although you’re hitting the minimum with the wheel, tank size and are head and shoulders above the typical gerbil owner, I think they would really benefit a lot from more enrichment. Consider changing up their toys - even if it’s just interesting carboard boxes to climb on and into - and getting rid of that bowl to scatter food around the env so they can forage can go a long way. From what I’ve seen, it’s surprising to see gerbils cowering when you’re changing up the env and not at least popping up to see what’s going on. You seem to be doing a good job with hand taking, but I think mental stimulation would be the key to making them more confident

a trick for moving gerbils is to use a postal tube, they can not resist going into the tube

We had a bunch of gerbils once... the lady at the petstore said siblings would'nt reproduce, but oh boy did they reproduce.

Well I had some jokes and some things to say, but seeing everyone's comments, I will keep my one post to, how would the taste deep fried? Only kidding, I am a vegetarian. How do you know I am one? Because I tell everyone. Lol. Really, have been one for 35 years next month. Anyways, great little peak into your life again. Thanks Bradley for sharing. I will give a a wonderful rodent that you can play with, a ferret! Best rodent ever to have around the home. The problem is, they like to tunnel in your couch and when people sit down on the couch ..... 💀 I had at one time, 12 ferrets, as many people wanted less responsibility. All they need is 1 hour of outside of there cage a day and bathed once every two weeks.

I love ferrets! I've owned two. They're actually mustelids (related to weasels, skunks, otters). Such cool animals, but they DO get into everything!

I am BEGGING you to do research on your gerbils. A 40 gallon aquarium is too small, toilet paper rolls are NOT safe for gerbils, it is very damaging to gerbils to remove their hides from over their head, you don’t need to and SHOULD NOT remove all of the bedding EVER it is really damaging to your gerbils well being, when being in the playpen they should be provided toys and water rather than just a couple hides and food, LASTLY your cage setup is very bare. I recommend buying another wheel, purchasing more toys, a bigger sand bath, sprays, and for the love of god remove the paper towel rolls (they can get stuck in them and die).
