Yep I hear the audio issues and see the video quality isn't the best. I will need to retire the equipment I had bought specifically to do these city update videos because it's not working well. For now though it's what I've got. Better to share imperfect updates than none at all.

Hey Jang! Long time model railroader here. Have you considered doing an around-the room design instead? You will probably be able to get more room out of your room, and you can make scenes designed to be viewed from one side, allowing more visual depth! And one more point, unless you just want to watch trains run (which is totally awesome too!), I’d make sure to put sidings in front of industries so your trains have places to go. But obviously, this is from a model train perspective, so this is what makes sense for our side, maybe not Lego.
@JANGcity6 ай бұрын
Sidings yep. Around the room nope. LEGO is almost O gauge in scale, but with a tiny fraction of the tractive force per powered axle. The net result is a need for somewhat wide radius turns and extreme speed drops where you're forced to tighten up (thus necessitating more base voltage & speed for continuous running, which is my main interest). I can't go fully around the room because it'd require a bare minimum of one very, very large drawbridge or hoist-up table, either of which is extremely inconvenient and requires stopping operations, eliminating my ability to run the loop while filming or streaming naturally all around the layout. Thus the best I can do is a wall-hugging "C" with large awkward 180 turns at both ends. Just doesn't work with my room, LEGO's scale, or my desires. I've done my best to work out very different layout concepts digitally and this general table arrangement here is far & away the most practical & comfortable.

Exciting!! I once did this with a medieval town I’d built in Minecraft. I’d spent a long time on it but ultimately I wasn’t satisfied with the layout that evolved from just building more and more stuff. Taking a bunch of buildings and structures down was heartbreaking but so worth it to walk through a town that was much more engaging to look at/walk through. All the best for your rejigging journey!

Jang. Has anyone successfully created a helix to have a two-level LEGO model railroad? I know it’s been done in Z thru O, but I wonder if it could be done with LEGO.
@JANGcity6 ай бұрын
Yep those are definitely done. Some folks have even done ridiculous floor-to-ceiling helixes on a "cuz I can" basis. They do have to be incredibly large in diameter if you want them to accommodate decently long trains or ones made with nice custom cars (which tend to be very heavy).
@DargoDog6 ай бұрын
How long does it take you to decided to make major changes like that? It took me over a week of just staring at my layout to pull one building out and start rebuilding that small section in a different direction. I am always interested in how things get changed, sometimes I really like the changes, sometimes there are elements I am sad to see go, but it is always inspiring. Thanks for sharing!!!
@JANGcity6 ай бұрын
Any one semi-major change can take easily multiple days worth of active, fully focused thought, necessarily spread over weeks and sometimes multiple months of time. I have to step back often, let ideas marinate, and sometimes simply wait for inspiration or motivation. It's often embarrassing to myself just how long it will take of practically "doing" nothing -- just thinking, sketching, moving things back & forth seemingly aimlessly before finally deciding to pull the trigger on a change.

With the new focus on making this a model train layout, is there any chance you'll reinstall a bridge across one of the gaps?
@JANGcity6 ай бұрын
Nope those are very inconvenient, especially fussy with 9V track, and limiting to future design changes, plus removing a gap would mean I would not be able to move my live streaming cart into or out of the center aisle of the layout during a stream without shutting down trains and going through the full set of bridge ops. I long ago made the room upright walkable and it's important to me to keep it that way, both for myself and for the viewer experience.
