The whole topic of "this is just intrinsically the way I am" is a really harmful rhetoric, and I've interacted with that ideology a lot. There's an allure to saying "some people are happy and some people are sad", but happiness is something that you have to commit to, it's something you have to want and then chase. I've watched a lot of close friends fall down this same hole, and when I tell them "you should work towards getting better", or I give them advice towards getting better, they'll deflect it by saying things like "but you aren't depressed", "wow thanks I'm cured", and "but you're intrinsically better off than me mentally". I think that this idea that depressed (or not-happy, as you describe it) people should just rot in their beds and never do anything is, in large part, caused by a sort of rationalization process that occurs in order to make progress seem futile. A lot of people choose to frame mental health as this insurmountable mountain, and while I think that's true in some aspects, it also leads to people saying "well I can't climb a mountain". Mental health is not a sprint, it's a marathon- putting your foot through the door is hard, but everyone is capable of it. Nobody is intrinsically predestined to be depressed, and life is more malleable than one might think at first glance.

In large part this is due to how we medicalize and pathologize wellbeing. Turning everything into a condition separates us from the environments we live in, it removes the context of the feeling and transforms it into something that you fix with medication or not at all. It's the subtle difference between "I'm depressed" and "I have depression" that changes the way we think about the issue. It's easier to think that something is impossible to overcome if you only think of it as a disease.

Yeppp I have the same exact experiences as well. A lot of friends in a state of mind which prevents them from making progress, which objectively can be attributed to being apart of depression, but it’s very annoying from an outside perspective to see this, have advice, and for them to discount it simply because they aren’t willing to get out of their self pity or accept that you may have good advice
