Clearly, it requires specialized techniques. Only a true sword genius would think to strike with the flat of the blade. Witness the birth of...Bug-ido! @jameswoodard43044 жыл бұрын
While a rusted, crusted shovel blade makes a...good, I guess...test for blade damage, it's not much use for anything else. If he had struck that shovel blade against any rough targets instead of a thin edge of metal, it would be much more likely to break in pieces than the reclaimed spring steel. [I get that you probably already knew this, but there is always THAT GUY that doesn't get it. So, annoyingly, there is always THIS GUY to over-explain things. I dont really like the trranslation of "Bauernwehr" to "Peasant Defense" , since the word "Wehr" was used as a general term for weapon. The term Bauernwehr was also sometimes used for polearms, it was more a general term for weapons used by peasants. "Wehr" is also where the modern german word "Gewehr" has its origin, which is used to describe firearms, most often long guns. You can also find "Wehr" in poems and songs from the 19th century, where it stands for different types of weapons. Edit: I forgot to mention that sometimes the term "langes Messer" would also be used to describe a blade as shown in the video, since it is basically a long knife.

@@miklow6605 No it wouldn't be a better translation and that is kind of the point. Do an image search for "Seitengewehr" and tell me how many guns you see. 'Gewehr' in its original sense meant 'something to defend yourself with' aka a weapon. Even at the time that 'Gewehr' had become synonymous with 'rifle', "Seitengewehr" still meant 'sidearm' and referred to a bayonet. This is true for WWI and WWII as well as the NVA = armed forces of former East Germany.

I have a tip for you for dealing with the mosquitos. I've lived in Michigan my whole life, and the only two things that have worked for me are scented candles (make sure they burn hot and smelly), and bug spray. You don't really have to go overboard with the bug spray at all- just put some on your collar, cuffs, and brim of a hat if you like and they won't bother you. Being a blacksmith, in terms of appearance, what you would do is reprofile the entire blade (including the tang), refit the hand scales to fit the now smaller tang, and then refinish it. Now you have a brand new, slightly smaller and lighter version of what you had. The reason for all of that is, if you simply remove metal on one end, the point of balance is now different, not by much, but it's different. Considering how much skall ground away, you'd have to take away even more than originally needed. But then again, that's all for appearances sake, obviously skall wasn't too worried about appearance and what he did was completely fine ; )

That's some really abusive testing, the only way to make that type of handle construction stronger is to swap out the brass pins for corby bolts or loveless bolts, to add an element of mechanical tightness, so it's not relying on epoxy bonds to retain it's strength. But there is a down side to that as well (When throwing your sword lol) because if the scale didn't pop off, the shock might have caused the wood to actually split and crack apart, leaving just the bolts intact, which would be more of a failure than just a single slab flying off. There's nothing wrong with using brass handle pins or mosaic pins, I use them they are plenty strong for normal use, they only failed because you threw the blade at a hard target, with a pile of rocks under it no less lol. Good video.

Doing some research it seems weapons like the Seax, Bauernwehr and Messer all share a common origin which probably predates Roman influence in the Germanic world. Early Roman Iron Age bog deposits show Germanic people in Northern Germany giving many single-edged short swords as offerings with few double edged. I'd imagine the indigenous design in Germania was then something similar to this, and the later double edged sword is a Hallstatt influence that probably came from the Romans who had adopted it from Celtic campaigns.

It's really interesting to think for a minute about what peasants who could afford a simple weapon would carry. The design is so much simpler than a professional fighter's weapon but perfectly effective considering the fact that I doubt a farmer's first priority would be to defend against mail, much less plate armor. He's probably worried about other peasants, feral dogs, wolves, etc. and there is really no need in such cases to have a finely-balanced blade tapered to a symmetrical piercing point. You don't need to be able to accurately thrust between gaps in armor or quickly parry a skillful swordsman's attack. You just need a big, handy, well-made blade. I like the honesty and straightforward craftsmanship of it. You know, Skall...viewers really like a good giveaway...just sayin'. 😉

For something to make the handle more substantial to hold *and* make the connection of the scales more secure, what about a paracord or leather wrap?

5160 definitely earns its reputation as a super tough steel. CPM 3v is just a hairs hair less tough but with much higher edge retention. Would be interesting to see how well 3v does in the same form factor.

A very cool weapon, and quite overlooked - like most Messer variants seem to be.

Jörg Sprave made some machines for destructive Testing of Knives. Maybe you can cobble together something similar for comparable testing? A spring loaded leaver?

*Never* lean on a blade like you do at 3:20 min! If it breaks, you will get broken pieces of steel flung right into your face with a lot of energy/speed. If you do strength tests, set them up so that the broken blade pieces will fly into the opposite direction from where you're standing. Also be mindful of surfaces that they might ricochet from and back into your direction.

*Please read these out of context.* "Extremely strong , stiff and hard." "He wanted me to be rough with it." "He wanted me to break it." "I couldn't bring myself to escalate things further than I did." "It sure flexes." "Next step was to throw it." "We're playing rough here , that's the idea. To be abusive , to be hard on it." "As long as the edge alignment is good." "What else do you want me to do ? I could do _repeatedly_ hacking , edge on edge. I could put it on a vise and hit it with a hammer. I could put it in the vise and bend it till it breaks , things like that." "So I think it has suffered enough. I think it's safe to say this is perfectly good quality." "You're not supposed to throw it." "That was just abusive test purposes." "As you're using it , you're wrapping your fingers around it anyway." "It didn't loosen up during any of the other tests."

Truly a blade for the working man.

The blade shape and size is quite similar to a cimeter knife I used a lot as a butcher. Judging by the testing this would make a decent job as a cleaver and wouldn't have any issues with bone, might have to see about getting one.

Hey skall can do comment on how effective and Ethiopian Shotel sword would be against more shields. specifically greek and roman shields or European tower and kite shields

For a blade that size I would go for a higher HRC like 58, which has much higher sharpening capability and edge retention. A sharp edge that cuts deeper and lasts longer is far more useful to me, 55 are way too soft for a big knife.

Harder steel can't be sharper than softer steel, it just holds the edge longer

I would love to have one of these to use for camping purposes at LARP events. It looks like it could pass for a "medieval machete."

Put it in a vice and hit the nail guard and the blade to see how much it can take, that could have been interesting data. Also, droping it on hard ground, that's how I damaged most of my knives during reinactment (alongside messing the temper by poking sausages cooking on a fire).

Gotta love good quality spring steel. By far, the best types of steel for swords -- and in my mind, 9260 silicon spring steel is the king of kings. As rust resistant as stainless steel, will never hold a bend or warp, and will hold an edge like nothing else.

Skall, skall, skall... The man said to break the sword... No mercy! Beat it until there is no sword left!
