I appreciate how Suga/Agust D can articulate those mixed feelings about balancing between staying true to yourself and growing as a person. A lot of rap fetishizes the idea of "staying real" but doesn't address the fact that we often develop habits and patterns to help us survive in hard times but when our circumstances improve, we cling to those habits and patterns even if they no longer help. Or they ignore that even the most comfortable external life can't miraculously cure mental illness or trauma. Suga never forgets those things. And he never sounds whiny about it -- he's honest with himself and he's honest with us so we never hear his words and dismiss them like "boo hoo, the multi-millionaire is crying." He's worked very hard musically to always show us the real person inside the image.

“I realised that I didn’t know who to be angry with anymore. Finally, I was able to look at myself. I’d been making a weapon out of anger and a sense of inferiority, but around 2018, my self-destructive rage slowly started to subside. I realised that I couldn’t channel creative energy through only those sorts of emotions any longer.” - Suga from the vogue interviews they did in dec (highly recommend reading these if you have down time). It’s wonderful to see how their growth thru lyrics over the years, esp w his first mixtape and now D2, and w RM1 & mono, excited to see jhopes in hopeworld2 this year.

There is a melancholy in Suga’s voice that even without knowing the lyrics, I can sense that vibe. It’s pretty cool how they manage to convey across language barriers

You’re right, one thing BTS and the individual members do well is to write bouncy upbeat songs with such morose topics 😂 I love how the lyrics express a conversation with within himself, so many dichotomies between his life pre-success and post-success, where he came from and where he is now, how he thinks he deserves his success after going through so much shit but also having impostor syndrome. Then he wraps it all up with the hook where he’s like yeah maybe these dichotomies are actually not real, it’s all just the same and I shouldn’t worry so much about crashing and instead just accelerate more despite that possibility

Also agree. 'Bouncy upbeat songs with morose topics' - to quote another ARMY and BTS reactor Ive watched "BTS write / create mental health bangers!".💜 and if its not straight up mental health its social commentary. We know even the upbeat songs have deep messages and meaning and aren't usually simple happy topics, there's substance.

SUGA lyrics are always so deep and hit so hard in all different ways to all different kinds of listeners. There is a song of him that I really like and also the song that made him my bias in BTS, it's called The Last by AUGUST D. Please check this out and I believe that you would like it too. Thank you
@SwrvShiesty2 жыл бұрын
One of the things I enjoy about BTS' music the most is the fact that not only are the lyrics top notch but also the production as well. I find that a lot of songs specifically in the rap genre that have deeper lyrics tend to sacrifice the replay-ability of the song and ends up sounding very "preachy". With BTS, I don't find that to be a problem whatsoever
@Dani.Torres2 жыл бұрын
This is exactly what I comment to my friends. BTS songs are not "preachy", they leave it all in the open for you to think about it, have your own opinions and make your own choices. I am still very fascinated by this, because I grew up listening to so many preachy lyrics in the hardcore and metal genres...

What you said about Juice Wrld .. I think you will understand it more once you react on 'The Last' by Agust D .. D-2 (second mixtape) is intense but Agust D's first mixtape is way intense and ...dark ... It's Agust D's journey from before he joined BTS and after that .. you will find it interesting how Agust D has changed and softened a lot in 3-4 years.

I haven't gotten around to D-2 so this was my first experience with Moonlight. How relatable. I have always taken walks in the middle of the night, when it seems like the rest of the city is asleep and it's just me. I take this time to think through my thoughts and allow myself to feel my feelings. I will often go to a secluded place where I can see the stars and the moon clearly. I just sit, look up and think. This made me realize that even though I have moved all over the place, been through so much shit and experienced so many different things, this moment with the night sky has never changed at all. It is always the same stars and the same moon, hitting me in the same way. It's kind of comforting and kind of sad to know that even though I'm a totally different person than I was, these walks still feel the same and mean the same thing to me. It makes me feel like I'm doing better and makes me feel like nothing has changed. It's a weird feeling I can't really explain. Thank you for this reaction.

I remember the first time I heard it I had no idea what it was about or the lyrics and it just started playing after another BTS song I knew. It started to effect me straight away, I was taken aback and had to look up the lyrics. 🎵 💜

*Suga is an introspective philosophical rapper, his first two songs always are raw but when you deeper into his mixtape it becomes a lot more complex. Suga has suffered from anxiety, he has gone through so much while he was young (if you look into his documentry) that now his mind is developed beyond his age (Perhaps thats why people refer to him as a old soul). He is also know for his one liner quotes, and pragmatic mindset. I would say the best way to know about his journey is to listen to his first mixtape where has has documented everything. Suga is now at much better place but when you look into his past, its pretty messed up but i guess that is why his journey is inspirational. I also would recommend Nevermind by BTS suga (its his solo song in bts). He has also talked about the importance of healthy music, he said that its the resposibilty of them to make music that inspires younger generation. He wants BTS to be remember as an inspiration artis (Suga is in charge of creating vision for BTS), i hope he knows that it is happening. There are so many insightful words he has spoken, it would be good if we go one by one and experience through his songs :)*

moonlight is one of my fav songs in this album! idk if u noticed but Adora, bts' previous producer harmonizes with yoongi in the bg, actually she did a lot of backup vocals in suga's mixtape which i'm so thankful for, it gives the songs such a full sound and ofc the lyrics were so brutally honest, him just telling us his story and struggles so plainly just hits u hard, in general this mixtape i feel balances between yoongi feeling the pressure of his position and wishing back for simpler times while acknowledging how those times weren't so great, along with a good mix of existentialism haha

This is one of my favorites for the pure vibe of the production Suga does but the meaning hits me for how I feel sometimes I find it so deeply relatable. Yet it’s not a totally dark song but it’s definitely not happy. It’s complex and gets better with each listen for me.

I have listened to and fall in love with D2 when it dropped but Moonlight is one of my least favorite songs there (still love it a lot!!!) so I haven't revisited the lyrics for a while and here I was able to do the thing you said - feel the sadness or rather melancholy just from the cadence alone. Also I love how he has this natural lisp and does nothing to "correct" it in his tracks but rather leans into it even more. Love his artistry.

Love this one, great lyrics and such a chill vibe. First time I've realised the very start bit of music, just the first 10 seconds, reminds me of the music from Jhopes Airplane (also a chill vibe) 😎 Love AgustD's singing in the chorus - he is an amazing rapper, but in my opinion he is also a great singer. He might not have the same vocal range that the vocal line members do, but still has a great singing voice and great tone. Going to be interesting for you when you do Seesaw - a BTS Solo by Suga. Its one of my favourites of his, it has some much more sing song / melodic rap but also singing from Suga. It has brilliant lyrics and vibe and is a great live performance. 🙂
