Detail work on Feathers

In this video I show how I get my detail into my feathers that I tool into leather. The detail work is what gives the feather a more 3D appearance and the feel of a real feather.

I learned from an older gentleman a few years ago and he taught me to use a swivel blade made of 5 #3 exacto blades fused together and it looks beautiful

Quill, quill, quill. The spine of a feather is a quill. But terminology aside, very good work, beautiful in fact. One of my cousins was a saddle maker. I spent hours in his workshop. I do leatherwork (as a hobby) to this day. I myself was a cowboy and handled lots of saddles, but I could never tackle a saddle. I tip my hat to you.

I was having a really hard time using the knife until I watched one of your other videos! You'd be impressed if you saw what I can do with it now. Beveling? Nope. I suck. Nice! Very helpful. In ancient times the "spine" of the feather was called the "quill", and they used them from certain large birds, such as geese and turkeys, to make quill pens. It was a bit of an art to cut the inside tips of the quills so that the ink would flow smoothly for beautiful cursive writing. That quill cutting needed a very sharp knife.

Did you use a regular beveling tool on the spine of the feather, then the modeling tool to create the veins near the spine? Or did you use a beveling tool that already had lines in it? The lines emanating from the spine outward (when you first started the video back after beveling, before you explained the modeling tool) look so perfectly spaced it made me curious. Thanks for the awesome vids. I can't tell you how much I've learned from you already.

I can’t remember on this but I usually use a normal beveler and then come in with a leaf liner (trapezoid shaped lined beveler) to get good lines down in the never along the spine... then I use the modeling tool to extend those out. It’s a modeling tool made by Peter Main, but there are many brands. This one is a custom tool and just have to catch him when he has some.

maybe the masons have some sort of pin they give out....or a printout that you stick pins through to stab dot-to-dot markings onto the leather or wood then just connect the dots with your tools

+Serena Serra I don't believe it would... leather takes water through the casing process and allows the material to be manipulated by tooling. Vinyl is water proof and I don't think it would work.

Hello DonI couldn't catch what you were saying about the type of pencil you're using so I turned on the CC and it said 8V artist pencil from Hobby Lobby or art stores. I looked in Hobby Lobby, Dick Blick, and on Amazon. I cannot find an 8V pencil anywhere? 8B yes, but not 8V? I tried a regular old #2 but it won't show up on dry leather. I'm at a loss, any help you can give would be appreciated. I DO have a few Stabilo pencils for doing graphic work on metal from my old airbrush days, but they don't do a clean job on leather AND they wash off with water, so as soon as I case my leather the lines begin to disappear. +Stoney327 yes sir it is an 8B graphite pencil. Sorry bout that! I buy the cheapest ones I can find and usually can find 8B in a two pack so u don't have to buy a complete set of graphite pencils. Good luck man and thanks a bunch!

+MyREDTAIL there is no burning involved in this. This is carving and stamping leather which gives it the impression and texture. There are some articles on my website that go through the tooling process deeper.
