Thank you. I always HATE working on a filthy vehicle, especially for making videos; so I invest some time in cleaning before I start. I actually made a video on how I clean the motors here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4utZ5xjbKiCa9k and a series on interior cleaning that starts here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHyvkmyCrpZ_j6s The interior video has become kind of popular so you may check it out at some point, hopefully you would find it informative and entertaining. Awesome ! 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan owner (and dad of three)! Love these GCs. Just finished 'derusting' and putting new coats of paint (primer, base, clear coat) on. She's looking 10 years newer! Looking to get all the squeaks out and get the ride back to as close to factory as possible. PS Great teaching/project vehicle for the boys as well. Keep up the great work.

I really haven't encountered "major" issues with these and I have clients that are well over 200k in theirs and still going strong. I am currently looking for my next project van so hopefully you'll be seeing some more videos on these in the near future. I still like the video, however, it would have been nice to have some footage of you actually putting on one of the bushings. So many people said they've had massive trouble putting on the bushing even if you were having trouble it would have been nice to see how you were having trouble putting the bushings on I've seen so many of your videos and you're just phenomenal at how in-depth you are but putting on the bushings is a major part of this project!

I bought the Moog bushings with the plastic sleeve, and trying to get the bracket over them was extremely difficult. I think the bushing diameter might be larger? I ended up pressing the bracket towards the firewall with a piece of wood until I could get the nut started.

I've noticed long bolts used in numerous places on several vehicles I've worked on. Is there a reason auto manufactures use what seems to be unnecessarily long bolts? Thanks!
@thardyryll
@thardyryll Жыл бұрын
In this case at least, the bolts are necessarily long. The retaining clip pivots away from the bolt because it is hinged at the top, and that automatically requires a longer bolt. If the retaining clip had bolt holes at both ends the hardware could be shorter. And you can bet that the other reason the bolts are long is not to benefit the mechanic. They are longer to speed assembly time during manufacturing. If there’s one thing the mechanic learns the hard way, it’s that modern vehicles are designed primarily to be built, not repaired.

What is the best and safest way to lift both sides of chrysler vehicle. My rocker panels are broken so what other lift points do I use to raise the front. What is the recommended area to place my jack stands towards the front of the car. Please include pictures. Thank you. Carlos
@javosgarage

Hi Carlos. This video linked below shows how I raise and support the vans I work on. It should point you in the right direction. Ultimately, you have to decide what is the safest for you, but be really careful. Only you can judge your working conditions and decide what is safe so do it at your own risk. This is how I do it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/raPGnqSbd8yphc0 Thanks for stopping by, I apologize for the delayed response.

@Antonio Manzano - I'm sorry but I have not done this repair on the 3rd Gen vans. I looked around and I don't have the Haynes manual either. I would think the general concept is similar but would have it own process. @Antonio Manzano - Sorry for the late reply, it was a long day. There were no 3rd Gen vans at the auction today so I was unable to find you a definitive answer. I did do some looking around and this guy did a video of his sway bar bushings on a 1996 Grand Caravan so it should apply to you. It looks to me the repair is very similar to the 4th Gen vans. I hope this helps you, let me know if I can help you with anything else. Here's a link to the 1996 Grand Caravan video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWayaZemj9OZa9E

What's the symptom(s) of bad sway bar bushings that leads to their replacement ?
@javosgarage
@javosgarage Жыл бұрын
When you go over bumps and you hear a knock or rattle in the lower front. It takes an inspection to verify the problem though because a knock or rattle in the front end could also be sway bar links (very common), struts, and ball joints. You don't want to throw parts at a problem so an inspection should tell you what needs replaced. My experience has pretty much always been to replace the bushings and sway bar links at the same time as they are both common failure points and if one is out the other is too or shortly behind. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for stopping by!

@Javo’s Garage thank you . But you left it higher then you showed in the video . Just wandering how you did that . Did you use block of wood between the car and floor jack
@javosgarage
@javosgarage Жыл бұрын
I don't use any blocks when lifting just because it's very dangerous (IMHO). I purchased Harbor Freight's Daytona jack specifically because it has such a great lifting height for cases like this. The vehicle is lifted only as high as the jack will safely lift.

Was it a distinct Knock sound ? I have a 07 T & C with a light knocking sound on right front fender area while driving lower speeds ( 25-40 mph ) I will check those for excess play and see . Thanks.
@javosgarage
@javosgarage 4 жыл бұрын
@RB K - Sorry for the delayed response, we took the boys and left town for a few days! There are a few possible causes for the noise you're getting in the RF that come to mind and I'll list them in the order I would be looking at: 1. Sway bar links. Start with a visual inspection, are the boots torn? Can you move them around? 2. Sway bar bushings. Is there any gaps or cracking in the bushing? 3. Struts. When you move the vehicle up and down by pushing (carefully) on the bumper is there play in top of the strut mount above the wheel well. I usually place a finger or two on that post and then bounce the van a bit, if there is movement in that post then you have a problem there, Also, when you bounce the van does it continue to bounce when you stop for a few times or does it quit bouncing immediately. If it keeps bouncing that's a sign of a worn strut. 4. Ball joints. To test this you would need to raise the vehicle and then grab the RF wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock trying to move it. If there is play than this could be your problem. I honestly can't seem to remember the last time I had to replace ball joints; that certainly doesn't mean they don't go out because they do I just find it to be rare in my experience. This knock or rattle sound in the front end of these vans is VERY common. My experience has been 40% sway bar links, 40% sway bar bushings and 20% struts in terms of the cause of the problem. I hope this information helps you get your problem solved. Please don't hesitate to ask if you have more questions, I'll be glad to help. Thanks for stopping by!

When we go after Service Manual for Chrysler Caravan/T&C/Voyager RG 01-07 - the split should go to the wall side, not to the front of the car, U should check that before you start with it
@javosgarage
@javosgarage 4 жыл бұрын
@Seweryn Sagan - Thanks for stopping by. I think my camera angle may be confusing a bit. The installation instructions for the Moog sway bar bushings (Part #K7406) call for the split to face the bottom of the vehicle. Thinking of how the weight of the vehicle rests on the bushing, this would be the only correct way. If the split were to the rear (or wall) every time you accelerate the weight of vehicle would be pushing into the split and likewise if the split were to be facing forward then when you brake the weight of the vehicle would again be pushing into the split. Having the split facing the top of the vehicle would also cause problems because it would have the most constant pressure on the split. The proper orientation of this Moog bushing is to have the squared corner of the bushing on the bottom towards the rear of the vehicle, this places the split properly on the bottom. Maybe other brands or variations call for a different installation procedure but for this particular part this is the correct orientation. I hope this can clear up any confusion. I appreciate you taking the time to leave me some feedback, have a great day!

@javosgarage 4 жыл бұрын
@Sewryn Sagan - Thank you very much for the compliment! I always clean everything before I start my work, it just seems to make things go better. I'm a bit Type A and a detailed oriented person so our conversation has been on my mind all day. I was sure the orientation was correct, yet I had no reason to doubt you. So to settle the matter I went out tonight and purchased both sets of sway bar bushings to see what the manufacturer's instructions had to say. Turns out, we are BOTH right!! LOL! The K200601 calls for the split to be towards the firewall (as you rightly pointed out) and the K7406 calls for the split to face the bottom. I can't seem to find why they have it that way, but they both call for a different orientation. I made a little video tonight with an unboxing and comparison of the two along with the instructions to help future viewers see the differences. Thanks so much for taking the time to leave your comments, I wish you nothing but the best no matter the orientation of your bushings, LOL!
