I'm kinda late to the party but I decided to do the math. Assuming no garlics are destroyed while the zombies eat them and garlics have a 50% chance to have zombies either go up or down if both are available, using this setup, if a zombie doesn't ever go into the middle lane but goes back and forth, they will eat the garlic on average 5 times per column. That's 1 garlic being eaten 3 times, the other at 2. The first and fifth rows don't have any probabilties tied to them because the zombie will always go back to the second or fourth rows. Therefore, if a zombie spawns on the 2nd or 4th row, their odds for making it to the end of the field of garlic you have set up is 3.8147 x 10^-6, or 0.0000038147%, and for the zombies on the 1st and 5th rows, its 7.62939 x 10^-6 or 0.00000762939%. Not decent odds, especially since you can place one squash at the end and deny them from doing anything.

Ok let's do the math here: In order to go to the middle row, a zombie on row 2 or 4 must bite the garlic and then go to the middle row, if the zombie is on row 1 or 5, it will always return to row 2 or 4. Each time a zombie changes rows after biting garlic, it moves forwards approximately 20% of 1 tile (just eyeballing it). This means that if we hypothetically filled the entire lawn with garlic except for 2 rows, a zombie would bite the garlic on rows 2 and 4 17-18 times. This means that in order to reach the end of the lawn without touching the middle row in this scenario, a zombie would have to roll a 50/50 chance of going away from the center 17-18 times in a row. The chances of this happening are 1/262144, or .000381469% So not quite 1 in a million, but still preeetty unlikely

You can really see how the games code forces you to use all the lanes. Watch how the zombies bounce back and forth between the garlic lanes while taking many lane switches before actually going to the lane that is causing damage.

I have something that I kinda want to see. Back column is sun production, next column is attack, and all the columns after would be garlic. They would slowly move along the garlic being hit by all the killing plants. I wanna see how that works out.

That will work out fine. The zombie will shuffle left and right like you see in the clip, each time advanced forward a little bit. It's like they walk in a zigzag instead of a straight line. So yeah overalls not too interesting

i tried that once its useless because not only do you waste a ton of sun on garlic trying to constantly replant them, but your plants also cannot kill zombies effectively with only 1/2 rows except if its a chomper or something

My strategy for day: Plant 3 sunflowers in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows. Get a peashooter for the first zombie, and then get 2 more sunflowers, this time on the 1st and 5th lanes. Now, P e a s h o o t e r t i m e !
