JohnnyBGood11 Hey Johnny. You're exactly right and let me give you an update on what is happening with this case. After these nondestructive tests, we usually would cut it in half and run further tests. Instead, we returned the bar to the seller who confronted the person they bought it from. The Authorities are now involved and are running a larger investigation on this scam. We'll let you know of any further updates.

My theory is that the ammount of counterfit stuff out there will keep the spot price of precious metals low because people not in the know belive there is more of the stuff floating around then there really is. At the same time it should also keep premiums from reputable dealers high because those that are in the know only want to buy from them. I think that in a colapse of the dollar(the reason i stack), every one that intends on using gold or silver as money is going to need to become an expert on detecting fakes and also proving authenticity to people that you wish to trade with. Just my thoughts on the matter, im by no means an expert

Pretty interesting video. Do you have to go through all that for every piece of gold you purchase? I don't know much about gold pieces but I'd like to think there must be an easier test to save you some time. Pretty fancy gadgets though.
@QualitySilverBullion9 жыл бұрын
Quarter Hoarder I know right? It's a pain, but you can Never be too careful. It's our practice to go through a series of tests when buying gold. Especially when we will be using the gold to melt down and re-mint it into bullion products. In that case, we have even more tests that we have to go through in order to ensure the purity of the gold. Our ISO9001 standard requires us to be exact when it comes to quality. I wish there were an easier way too, but counterfeiters are getting better and better.

does the gold bar have to say troy ounce on it? can it say it on the packaging?
@captainhowdy95578 жыл бұрын
It would say 999 or 9999 , and yes the bar would say something pertaining to wait and purity . Not every bar needs a serial number to be real . And wit out destroying the bar you need that machine . If you ever want to find out if yours is real go to a coin shop that has one and act like your selling one to find out . If their nice guys you can guest ask if they can check for you .

You don't even get Tungsten under that outer layer of yellow? HUGE size for a ounce ounce gold bar. Should be noticeable from a distance for a trainded observer...
@QualitySilverBullion9 жыл бұрын
Cloxxki Thanks for the comment. We're glad we caught it. Another obvious red flag was that the bar was not sealed in the tamper-evident card. Buyers Beware!
@Cloxxki9 жыл бұрын
So the main hint that it might be gold, was the color? :-)
@QualitySilverBullion9 жыл бұрын
Cloxxki The main thing that gave it away was the thickness. The quality is very good, but it doesn't have the feel of density. The precious metal verifier picked it up, and the specific gravity clinched it. No need to cut it in half, and we can't really do that because the person that bought it needs to go back through the channels to get their money back.
@Liedragon8 жыл бұрын
I still don't get the specific gravity measurement? Would it not be the same for a bar which weighs the same but is made from a different material. I've tried researching it but still getting confused. I understand buoyant force and displacement but can't see how it differs if the object weighs the same. Someone help?
@MrAstinus1118 жыл бұрын
Liedragon the test shows the metal objects natural tendency to float. The different metals will be more( heavier) or less( lighter) susceptible to floating depending on the makeup and purity of the metal. Therefore putting less weight or more in the water. Probably a more scientific explanation out there but I believe that's as simple as it can get.
@Liedragon8 жыл бұрын
Cheers man.
@stankdog13576 жыл бұрын
Gravity test gets density in gm/cm^2. Water displaced in relation to weight. Nothing about metal “floating”.
@brassj675 жыл бұрын
Think about what the weight would be if you put in 31g of water. it would weigh 31g because it is the same density as the water in the glass....right? Now put 31g of aluminium in the water that is about 2.5 times as dense as water. It is more dense so will have less volume, so it will appear to weigh less than the water. in fact it will appear to weigh 31/2.5 = 12.4g. Now the gold has a specific gravity of 19.32 so is much more dense than water or aluminium and will take up much less volume and would appear to weigh 31/19.32=1.6g I hope this explains what is going on

Very interesting. I assume it didn't come in an assay card? Also, it looks thicker than the real thing. If it is indeed steel, it would feel lighter in hand too as gold is so dense. I'm surprised they wouldn't fake these using tungsten. Great specific gravity test to verify the test you showed at the beginning!
@QualitySilverBullion9 жыл бұрын
SalivateMetal The one thing about the Perth gold bars is that they are smaller than other mints one ounce bars, so they are thicker than those, so you couldn't compare the thickness of a Credit Suisse or PAMP Suisse bar with a Perth bar for thickness. But it is thicker than it should be. It would be wise for everyone to keep a cheat sheet with the dimensions of real bars, rounds and coins.

Thanks for the heads up...but only the cheapest of fake bullion is different than real gold...gold plated tungsten is identical in mass density as solid gold. Don't need all that fancy equipment to see that that bar is a fake, look how thick it is, also the letters and design are not true in detail, so you would have to be a fool to buy it thinking it was real a gold bar. The ping test should be the first thing you do, it never fails. BTW: That machine is a joke I had bought that thing a year ago and sent it right back, it was all over the place when reading silver bars & gold, and NGC/PCGS Coins from the same plastic sheet of 20, plus I tested other items and it was again all over the place. I was told the bars may have been to warm to test them from the heat of your hand and so on, what a shit show that was, than he sent me out another tester same shit happened, he was so sure that the machine was right and I was wrong or the bars were fake, so I drilled holes in the 10oz Silver JM Bars and showed him that they were pure silver, bought at Apmex, JMRC & Gainsville Coins, that tester is worth nothing, and they sell for over $700, it was garbage in my opinion. If you have any question or need help -Holla !!

Raymond. R Welcome back Raymond. As we discussed before, we have a different opinion about the Precious Metal Verifier. Obviously the machine caught this fake, along with some other non-destructive tests we ran. Just by catching this one fake gold bar, the precious metal verifier paid for itself almost twice. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with the machine, and hopefully you got a refund from whoever you bought it from.As far as the ping test: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZ2cqYqqpc2cgZo

Stokjockey I see. This bar came in with some other gold that a customer sold to us, and because it's not gold we are sending the bar back to them. Quality Silver Bullion Number one reason I never buy Perth Mint gold bars is to many fakes and dealers will not buy them back when they are not in the Mint card they come sealed in, also I have been told that because the bar is not serialized to match the card some dealers won't even buy them back in the original Mint seal. I know this from experience and never again will I buy a Perth Mint gold bar. Just not enough security for me, I will stick to PAMP or RCM when it comes to bars.
