This! And also never tell them you're going to leave. I can't even say how many times I've seen cases on here where they were planning on leaving & then at the end they tell their abuser they're going to leave or are leaving & the abuser snaps on them & they end up hurt or worse. Make a plan. Tell a loved one what's going on & your plan. Hide money back. Low-key get things organized so when you're abuser is gone you can grab what you need quickly because you can't just have it in boxes.. And the most important step.. just leave. Do it. They will never change. I had 9hrs to get myself, my 3 sons, & all of our stuff out of a 3 story house & into a 3rd floor walk- up apartment across town & did it in a Honda Civic. I couldn't take our beds, any furniture/appliances, the piano, pool table, my sons' bikes, dirt bike, etc..I got my kids a sitter after school so I could move faster. I was bawling the whole time. But we did it & it all worked out in the end. My ex sold all of the boys & my stuff I couldn't get out & kept the money. He did give me the old patio furniture & my armoire a year later. Woo-hoo. People stuck in these situations need to know there are people out there who will help, too. There was a local charity who had hidden storage units full of donated furniture for dv families. I got a table/chairs, curtains, beds for the kids, etc.. They were wonderful.

I'm glad you specifically said "abuser". There are a few comments saying similar just in general, as if everyone who leaves their partner should just assume their partner is going to murder them regardless of how gentle and peaceful that partner has previously been for however many years they have been together. When my ( now ex ) wife just didn't come home after giving me absolutely no indication that she was unhappy within our relationship, it wasn't because she feared I was going to murder her. It was because she was an adulterous coward and couldn't face up to the reality of what she had done and how she was effectively about to ( temporarily ) ruin my life. We're not all psychos and I'm glad to see you acknowledge that.

As a DV survivor myself hopefully I can help you by telling you part of my story & how I got away. I too was in almost your exact situation, a stay at home Mom with no income of my own & no vehicle. I was with my ex off & on for almost 20 years since I was 16 so I depended on him which is a horrible position to put yourself in with an aggressive controlling violent man. Around 2018 he’d had a mental breakdown, experiencing psychosis with many similarities to schizophrenia, he came to believe he was being followed constantly, he even believed employees at stores, restaurants etc were set up to monitor him, this got increasingly worse by the day with him now believing his family was involved & that me & even his own 13 yo daughter was working “against him”, he ranted & raved all day like a madman & hardly slept, he shot me with a BB gun several times, choked me until I blacked out, punched, slapped, kicked, threw things at me etc. so I started to document everything & plan my escape. Knowing that he’s very manipulative & a skilled liar I knew he’d just deny everything, like with his own family members painting me out to be the bad guy. I took photos of my injuries, saved texts, recorded his rants (which you’re allowed to do in my state without their consent & can be used as evidence), etc. I applied for for government assistance so I could have a way of life without him & set everything up, NEVER telling him anything or giving him any reason to think I would leave or even be able to as far as he knew. I’d always take my kids to my Mom’s on Halloween to go trick r treating because she lives downtown so the day before I told him we were going over there to stay the night to go trick r treating so he wouldn’t be really suspicious. Once I left my Mom took me to the courthouse to speak with the DV advocate who then took me to the police to file a report showing them all the evidence I had & they issued a warrant for him, I stayed at my mom’s waiting for them to arrest him at our home. When they did, we went back home. I live in KY, where it’s a commonwealth that has no bail bondsmans, after the judge saw the evidence he gave him a super high bail there was no way he could pay so we’d be safe as he wouldn’t get out of jail. Much more to the story but as I’ve went on long enough lol, my point is you HAVE TO plan with men like this and NEVER ever tell them you’re leaving as that puts you in more danger of being murdered. You stated you’re disabled, apply for SSI, get everything in order make a plan with family or friends & then execute it. Document everything so that you have actual evidence & not just your word. I truly hope you come through this, if I did it anyone can 🙏♥️

I had a guy I worked with a guy that was released from Death Row after 20+yrs for a double murder in the 80’s. The couple was viciously stabbed before their house was burned. Every one believes he’s innocent and was set up, hence his case being turned over. Anyway, he comes up behind me at work one day, puts a pen in my back and says “it’s a stick up, don’t make it a murder”! I was stunned. I know he was joking, but it was wild! Ladies and gentlemen, please do yourselves and your family a huge favor and don’t only stay in a relationship “for the kids’ sake”. Whether it’s abusive, or that you’re just very unhappy and you know that you weren’t meant to be with that partner, know that you are harming your kids by having them be subjected to the abuse, the unhappiness, the stress etc. Your kids will not benefit from a 2 parent household if it is an unhealthy environment. Staying for the kids’ sake is a heavy burden on your own happiness, and if you’re not happy -then your children will suffer. If you don’t move on to protect your own mental and physical health, and if something tragic doesn’t happen along the way, next thing you know you’ll be old and miserable and realize you missed out on living your best life-and unfortunately you can’t get that time back. 🙏
