We have met lots of people this year that are getting poor advice from dealers (and others) about detector settings. I thought I would run through a basic but important point that will hopefully get you on the right path.

I love that line (abridged), "Run it at Grandpa settings, low sensitivity, tame settings, quiet, but use the Extra settings on a Patch".

As a prospector for 60 years on all sorts of minerals and gemstones and an electronics engineer for 50 years who was in a communications research centre building pi detectors before bruce candy ever thought of one, admittedly though not to find gold, in my opinion you are spot on.. Filters are meant to balance productivity against sensitivity. Signals will change depending on where you are, the depth and shape of target, temperature, atmospherics and soil conductivity. The aim is to gain the maximum depth for the conditions without the received signal masking the desired targets. As for productivity, it depends who you are, If you have unlimited time and want to dig every signal fine, if you have limited time or depend on a return on investment use your filters. you will lose less targets properly using your filters than you will by saturating the ground without filters. Imo.

Great Vid, agree 100% some settings peeps run makes me scratch my head. I had a mate who recently bought a 6000 from a Minelab dealer in Perth and he was told to use the DD coil in Normal on /Max sensitivity. He was also told to spend up to 2 minutes ground balancing the detector before swinging. Well after digging more the 10 false targets he was ready to wrap the detector around a tree. When he told me the story I was amazed that a dealer would tell him this’d as this is doing a disservice to Minelab. I got him to put the 11 coil on set it in difficult and start with a sensitivity of 4-5. Well he was amazed no false targets and he actually found gold. I told him to go back to the dealer and ask him to explain the advise he was given.

Good advice Tony, even got quite cold up in the Pilbara after around 80mm rain a few weeks back and the 30 / 40 knot winds made detecting a real chalange. Cheers.

Couldn't agree more Tony, I remember when I first got my 4500 and was running in factory settings in Enhanced, I always felt I was missing out because I didn't run the settings hotter, after a good 12 months of running the 4500 with hot settings and feeling fatigued I started taming those setting back again, the fatigue wasn't near as bad and I actually found more gold because I could hear the subtle targets better. Now with the 6000 it's mostly in Difficult and sensitivity of around 2-4 and doing really well here in Vic. It's hard to convince new people that less is more.

Agree (although i run my zed fairly hot most of the time🤪 using after market coils that let you run n normal a lot more than the standard coil ) always run me 4500 in enhance and only run the 6000 in difficult, ran into a bloke at nullagine had a brand new 6000 and couldnt find any gold ( was set up in normal) set it up for ol mate showed him where to go and 60 odd bits later he was trading in his 7000 last we heard cheers FB

You are dead right Tony. We too have very mineralised ground around our goldfields at Clermont. Difficult 4 is pretty much standard however I will often try flat out particularly on cool mornings, sometimes good, sometimes not. We’re hoping to do a lap this year and am keen to get onto one of your tours if all goes to plan. Does your website list everything we need to have in place prior to heading over your way?

Fair call , was given really dodgy advice when starting out by people who just didnt want anybody else to do well. few years later came across a guy whose detector settings had been changed by somebody helping .......... him. he brought his detector to me and even tho my knowledge is limited, put it mainly to factory preset. 3 days later he was back at my camp with ice water n a jar with nice gold chunks. took me for a drive n showed me good areas to try, where i did well, n stopped by frequently after that. best gold trip for me yet. found a friend and gold, how good can it get. @@goldtalkleonora6881 dB is how loud or soft it goes. There's a dB button on your receiver. Press the “dB” button to cycle through the three audio output levels (0dB, -6dB, -12dB) Set the level according to the requirements of the device receiving the audio. i.e portable recorder, smartphone, camera, etc.
