Values AFI between 8-18 cm is considered normal; median AFI level is ~14 cm from week 20 to week 35, after which the amniotic fluid volume begins to reduce AFI 20-24 cm is considered as polyhydramnios The normal range for amniotic fluid volumes varies with gestational age. As a rule of thumb: AFI of 25 implies polyhydramnios

An AFI between 8-18 is considered normal. Median AFI level is approximately 14 from week 20 to week 35, when the amniotic fluid begins to reduce in preparation for birth. An AFI < 5-6 is considered as Oligohydramnios The exact number can vary by gestational age.

For some reason my ultrasound tech leaves lot of space between the points even when there is no umbilical cord and i end up getting lower AFI.

Are you sure that above 8 cm is a case of polyhydramnios?

I don't agree with some of this teaching. 20 cm is not considered polyhydramnios. You do not include umbilical cord in measurement, but it can be visible in the pocket. This is why I hate doing AFI's. When each person does it differently, one can not f/u properly.
