I was taught this is not a simple 3:1 but rather a compound 3:1 because you multiplied the pully's outputs together instead of adding them together like a simple 3:1. I believe you were correct to multiply them in this method.

count the ropes then say 1 at the end . i see 3 ropes then say 3 to 1...easy
