How to figure out whether it's sin or cos: Know the parent graphs of sin and cos. Sin goes up from the origin, while cos starts above the origin and goes down. When reflected over the y-axis, sin goes down from the origin, while cos starts below the origin and goes up. Determine which one is closer to your graph.

My only issue is trying to figure out if it's sin or cos
@Ariminua6 жыл бұрын
You can use either since both graphs are nearly identical, just off from each other by a horizontal shift of pi/2 rad.

Many books use y =A sin (Bx + C) + D and the openstax Precalc uses y = A sin (Bx - C) + D. Your video switches the C and the D and students might get confused by the switch. Earlier students likely learned the quadratic: y = a (x - h)^2 + k. I suggest that maybe students can more easily transition to the trig with y = A sin [B(x - h)] + D and that y = A sin (Bx - C) + D might correlate to more textbooks.

Why are y =A sin (Bx + C) + D and y = A sin (Bx - C) + D both used? Does changing the sign of C not change the direction of the phase shift?

@miroticYJ12 жыл бұрын
what ? It's a sin because sin starts at the center and thats where he drew his line to begin the period. If he started the period at like the maximum, then he could have used cos. i find cos easier to use every time :\

@@nore4442 Yes, the period is pi. But that is why we set (2pi)B = pi.

B is always B= 2pie/ whatever~ example is the last Q he showed us, B= 2pie/ divided by one period which was : 7pie/4 subtract, negative pie/4... which is 2pie... so 2pie/2pie is 1... hence the 1 in his last example as B.... ummm understand?

THATS WHAT IM SAYING, he was the one who shifted it over, the graph isn't originally like that, he sectioned it off. If he had started from 0, there would not have been a shift. Or he could have picked the period ahead and got a different shift.
