Louis Essen where the speed of light was determined by using a microwave resonator. At the time in the early 50's, it achieved the most precise value of the speed of light. You too can do this experiment at home to work out the speed of light using chocolate and a microwave

Mr. Paul, sir, I think you have a very strong grip in physics and the way you explained most videos, seems like that physics subject is in your blood. You are naturally given the ability to explain so well in physics subject.

thats a really important topic in PHYSICS and sir you explained it awsome, AND THE IDEA OF CHOCOLATE and microwave is sooo innovative, so much inovative that i never actually had an idea when i saw the title

This experiment can be done with a variety of foods - cheese, marshmallows (big ones and small ones), and different brads of chocolate - anything that melts. So the question is "which give more precise results? And why? If you get a change to do the experiment with a different food, post your results here with the food you used. Maybe even make a short video of your efforts. And offer up your reason WHY there might be variation? (If it exists :) ) I'll do a follow up video if I get a good response The more details the better - what food you used and type/brand (eg cheddar cheese, marshmallow brand, cadbury's chocolate) - what size were your melted spots - your value (obviously) (A safety reminder: you do get hot food so handle with care, don't use metal plates and if under 18 get permission first)

Since the wavelengths measured by a variety of foods were actually different, isn't that because of the refraction of light? I guess that the 7% difference between the speed of light in vacuum and the one calculated in your experiment can be used to calculate the index of refraction of chocolate. Different foods might have different wavelengths ( a refracted wave will propagate with the same frequency of the incident wave but with different speed and thus different wavelength in the medium of refraction).

Mind if I ask where you got the 10 to the power of 6? I didn't see it mentioned earlier in the video, and I couldn't make out what you said it was or represented. Thanks!

It was frequency of microwave. M means mega(10^6)

Will the anti-nodes always appear at the same location when you repeat the experiment?

Big problem at the experiment: Chocolate will vanish on the way to oven. Its called choloate for good reason.

Why does a standing wave have to be formed in the cavity resonator? Couldn't it just be open ended if all you need to do is measure the anti nodes? You could just measure two anti nodes out of phase and you'd have half the wavelength and by extension the entire wavelength. Does creating standing waves increase the intensity so the anti nodes can be detected?

We are Dealing with electromagnetic radiation, not sound waves. That means you need metal walls for the reflection and us to have no kids at the walls.

I still don’t believe that after hitting the wallls of the waveguide the electromagnetic waves will be the same...and I also don’t know how they determined the frequency of the wave did they do it the chocolate way?

Great video, a fun way to explain C to kids and hopefully get them interested in the noble science of physics. 639 views in 14 days is a sad indication of what human beings have become, especially when compared to the number of views that videos of unruly mobs trying to destroy uncomfortable histories around the world get. Very little thirst for knowledge, but a huge appetite for destruction. Only knowledge can conquer ignorance, keep up the good fight please.
